6 Main Topic Standardized M2M platform software for smart cities and the IoT At Fraunhofer FOKUS, we have developed an M2M platform software called OpenMTC that can be used for rapid prototyping of M2M applications and end-to-end communication scenarios. It is based on existing and emerging standards from ETSI TC M2M, 3GPP, OMA, and onem2m. We use and distribute the software in different project contexts such as smart home, utility metering, tracking & tracing, and logistics. M2M software and testbeds Our software and testbeds help R&D teams and application developers to understand and to evaluate M2M communication technologies. Mirroring the end-to-end communication network, starting from mobile devices and sensors, fixed/radio access networks, and the core network up to service platforms, they provide a means for the demonstration and in-depth study of M2M architecture overview: From devices to applications M2M and all-ip communication services. Our functional prototypes are based on software components running on cost-efficient off-the-shelf hardware and are able to provide configuration flexibility, change the system behavior during runtime, and realise functional extensions. The entire test and prototyping environment can be virtualized, replicated for multiple developers, and deployed in the cloud, enabling a flexible software toolkit. In addition, source code access enables deep insight into a practical implementation of standard components and interfaces. Through this first-hand access to ETSI, 3GPP, OMA, and onem2m standard features, developers and R&D teams are brought up-to-date significantly faster. Our standard-compliant M2M toolkits can be customized to adapt to specific network conditions, through configuration files and runtime commands, enabling proof of concept and validation of novel features. The OpenMTC Platform OpenMTC includes the implementation of an M2M gateway that can bridge between different sensor network technologies (ZigBee, FS20, etc.) and connect them to the wide area network. The OpenMTC M2M Core has been developed with a cloud deployment in mind allowing for automatic scaling of the application servers and database. It can aggregate and store data from various devices and acts as a device management and abstraction layer providing RESTful APIs on top of standardized data structures. Also, we provide an SDK to support application developers across various vertical M2M segments. Optionally, the M2M platform can be combined with other systems such as our IP Multimedia Subsystem (OpenIMS Core) and Evolved Packet Core (OpenEPC) platforms. This allows developers to combine human-to-human (H2H) communication paradigms with M2M and to rely on advanced connecti vity features such as policy-based access network selection, seamless network hand-overs, session continuity, and de dicated Quality of Service (QoS). OpenMTC supports a resource oriented architecture with a hierarchical resource tree defined by ETSI. This governs how M2M applications can exchange data with the OpenMTC M2M Core and gateway. Each entity in the M2M system, i.e. applications, devices, or data, is represented by uniquely addressable resources in the resource tree, which can be accessed and manipulated via the CRUD operations (create, retrieve, update, delete) via different transport protocols (HTTP or CoAP). The CRUD operations are for example mapped to the HTTP methods POST, GET, PUT, and DELETE. Since M2M devices can be constrained in terms of memory, energy, and computation power, the constrained application protocol (CoAP) is currently gaining momentum to support essential features required for constrained M2M devices, such as low header overhead. Innovation and R&D collaboration We believe that software-based M2M prototypes and testbeds can help M2M market players to stimulate innovation through rapid prototyping, conceptual evaluation, benchmarking, and testing. Our partners include universities, M2M device manufacturers, integrators, and telecommunication operators worldwide. 7 Main Topic Low energy positioning services in buildings Location related services become increasingly aware in in - door applications. Typically they take place in smart home, metering, or shopping scenarios where objects are tracked and persons may be localized or guided. A lot of research work has been published within the last decade, but only a very small part has been industrially-proofed deployed in public and private areas. In many cases, deployment and main tenance costs, as well as incompatibility to out-of-the shelf devices and standards, inhibited a broader field of application. Tiny Bluetooth low energy slave node Infrastructure requirements The most elegant solution to provide indoor position information is the GNSS system. Unfortunately, even the latest Galileo satellites generally do not provide signals within buildings. Carrying geo data with Dead Reckoning methods in buildings is not reliable in the long term and position errors cumulate with medium cost. Furthermore, only a few machines and medical apparatus are taken outside at all. As a consequence, an indoor localisation infrastructure in form or landmarks or beacons is ineluctable. Common radio frequency based solutions are Ultra-Wideband (UWB), RFID, WLAN and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, the promising UWB is still exotic and incompatible with most consumer and industrial devices. Passive RFID transponders need very powerful reader devices on the other side. As a consequence, the overall power consumption is very high or readings distance is restricted to within a few centimetres, as with Near Field Communication (NFC). Bluetooth low energy The formerly Ultra Low Power denoted the Bluetooth low energy (BLE) standard has been introduced with the aim to provide extreme power resource awareness in combination with a prevalent communication technology (Bluetooth). Although BLE reuses RF, HCI and L2CAP from Bluetooth, interoperability between BLE and Bluetooth devices is provided by means of hybrid Bluetooth chips acting as gateways. Virtual prototyping In many application scenarios, operation is limited by battery power or the disposability of harvested energy. The objective of system design is to allocate quality-of-service under these restrictions. Therefore different hardware and software configurations, environmental conditions, and use cases should be taken into account. Because of the magnitude of parameters, evaluation by means of computer simulation is one effective method to meet this challenge in complex systems. In order to operate with accurate virtual prototypes, physical data as radio propagation or energy consumption have been extracted from a small-scale reference installation consisting of tiny BLE slave nodes as depicted in Fig. 1 and actual ios devices which support Bluetooth 4 (dual mode BLE and Bluetooth). On basis of simulation and validation in a real environment a localisation accuracy of a few meters and a beacon battery lifetime of several years with a coin cell have been achieved. For further information, please contact us. Conclusion BLE is an emerging short and medium distance communication standard. With its very low energy consumption, it is an ideal candidate for battery and energy harvesting powered sensor and communication nodes such as beacons for indoor localisation. A network based on virtual prototypes supports behavioural analysis and optimisation before node deployment and infrastructure installation. 8 Main Topic Logistic optimisation with next generation intelligent container Project overview Millions of tons of food are wasted due to inappropriate transport conditions. A large share of these losses can be avoided if deviations from the optimal conditions are detected as soon as possible. In particular, the temperature can show large variations inside a truck or cargo container. The Intelligent Container (www. intelligentcontainer.com), a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, developed in cooperation between the University Bremen and several industrial partners, provides better supervision and control of food transports by combining M2M and new software technologies. Freight supervision unit and its applications Wireless sensors are packed inside pallets with bananas or other commodities to detect spatial temperature deviations. The freight supervision unit gathers and processes the data from this network. At the same time it acts as a bridge between the internal communication network (Wireless Sensor Network) and external communication networks such as the Iridium satellite system or GSM. The capabilities of the intelligent container were demonstrated in ocean transports of bananas and road transports of meat.because external communication links might not be available temporarily or simply too expensive on ocean transports, the container is also equipped with a platform for local decision making, including algorithms to evaluate the effect of temperature deviations on the quality of the food product. The algorithms are not static; they have to be adapted to different commodities and to the requirements of the logistical chain at hand. This demand was solved by using the mbs, an OSGi ( software framework provided by ProSyst. OSGi allows installing and updating software components without interrupting the execution of other components, even if there are dependencies between them. For example, even though a component to supervise the transport conditions for a certain fruit is already running, a new controller software for the air flaps, to 8 M2M Journal 16 13/05
9 Main Topic provide best atmospheric conditions, can be installed over the external M2M network. A plug-in for the Eclipse IDE enables the installation with only a few mouse clicks. This can be done remotely, independent of the container. ProSyst developed a CAN OSGi implementation on top of SocketCAN (developer.berlios.de/projects/socketcan/), which migrates CAN J1939 messages and ISO-TP messages to Java objects. This enables apps inside the OSGi Framework to receive and send messages and react on these on a per-event base. Several OSGi bundles have been developed for the Intelligent Container; among them are bundles to collect the sensed data from wireless low-power sensors, either using proprietary or standardised protocols. The standardised protocols supported are 6LoW- PAN, RPL and CoAP of the Internet Engineering Task Force which allow for web-like communication with resource constrained devices. CoAP is especially interesting for M2M since it is currently being integrated into the M2M standards of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) and Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). Summary Field tests have shown that the wireless monitoring of freight in transport, the analysis of the sensor data inside the container, and the resolution of emergency situations for the freight inside the container or via emergency messages to the backend, are enhancing the quality of the transportation of the goods. Especially for organic freight, the Intelligent Container increases the efficiency of the transportation and the quality of the delivered goods. Contact Dr.-Ing. 10 Products and Developments The machine to machine movement We are just now beginning to realise the inflection point for Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology adoption. The change in discussion from technology to business impacts has been the catalyst for widespread M2M technology deployment. When establishing an M2M initiative, businesses are no longer focusing on the type of data the equipment can produce. Rather, organisations are considering where the greatest opportunity resides to improve processes and enhance the bottom line. By taking a strategic perspective from the outset, organisations are ensuring that their technology investment is contributing to the bottom line not diminishing it and generating strong ROI. expand their business and benefit from the recurring revenue opportunities, while improving customer service and client satisfaction. This is a great example of how forward-thinking companies are producing equipment data and integrating it successfully. Operational visibility: Integrating the demand and supply chains A look back: M2M technology enablers Sensor, gateway, battery, cloud and cellular network technology are key enablers of M2M solutions, and all have experienced dramatic advancements in recent years. For example, 10 years ago, sensors were the size of a hockey puck and cost as much as $300. Sensors were also connected via landline, if at all, and had limited battery life. Today, sensors are generally the size of a nickel, wireless, offer greater functionality and cost at a tenth of their previous price. Today s gateways also optimise battery life because they allow users to transmit data only when necessary. Similarly, batteries have become smaller and offer longer life in more challenging environmental conditions such as colder, warmer and moisture-rich environments. Cellular technology has also improved and become more economical. Because organisations are optimising business applications, cellular network cost is decreasing. Companies are transmitting equipment data only when necessary, allowing companies to connect devices more cost effectively. Finally, cloud computing platforms have enabled greater adoption of M2M technologies. Cloud solutions have become more robust, increasingly scalable and less expensive. The solutions also offer greater data storage and analysis capabilities, allowing organisations to lessen the complexity and maximize the return on investment (ROI) of their M2M technology deployments. Today: Migrating from data production to data production, integration and application Traditionally, organisations looked at M2M as a way to produce data using sensors and gateways attached to equipment to generate data for consumption. However, the evolution of technology has allowed data to be produced more economically over time. Therefore, the data available to the enterprise has increased dramatically. Organisations now have more data to impact more functions within the enterprise. As more data is produced, enterprises obtain greater value by applying that data across the organisation. The information can often be applied to other areas of the business than the data s original intent leading to increased efficiencies, new revenue streams, enhanced customer service and other benefits. For example, consider a leading provider of commercial refrigeration products. The company originally believed its M2M project would allow it to enhance customer service and improve product development with access to a greater wealth of machine data. However, the data proved far more valuable. With real-time access to equipment data, the company can now offer ongoing service contracts to its customers for troubleshooting, maintenance and intelligent diagnostics to generate recurring revenue. It can also offer reporting capabilities to end users with compliance needs relative to food safety and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. Contractors and resellers can also A major benefit of M2M technology is operational visibility. Operational visibility allows organisations to integrate their demand and supply chains. For example, a customer service organisation can respond to auto-generated/auto scheduled service tickets within the Salesforce Service cloud when a machine goes down (or is close to failure) rather than waiting for a human to recognize an issue and create an alert. This allows an enterprise to reduce labour costs and enhance customer service. Organisations typically manage their businesses using trusted analytical tools like ERP systems, CRM solutions, marketing software, etc. Now companies can manage their equipment in the same way. The machines organisations use today have a lot to say. And if they were plugged into the enterprise in a way that businesses could understand, the possibilities would be endless. Fortunately, M2M technology is now making this a reality. Innovations in sensor, gateway, cloud and cellular network technology are enabling a whole new class of connected device. These connected devices are transforming business and driving profit and ROI. Contact Matt Jennings Vice President of Solutions Digi International 10 M2M Journal 16 13/05

12 Applications and References A Game of cat and mouse Finding a missing pet is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Tierchip Dasmann s M2M solution mykeeper promises to solve the problem. A matchbox-sized tracking box enables missing pets to be located online almost in real time on a digital map. Owners used to hand out leaflets or place newspaper adverts in their search for missing pets. Today many reports of missing animals are circulated on social networks such as Facebook. Yet many owners still fail to find their missing pets. In the future this problem might be solved by means of a special tracking box based on machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. Tierchip Dasmann, a company based in North Rhine-Westphalia, developed the solution jointly with Deutsche Telekom and the telematics specialist akquinet. Jobst Dasmann wants to help owners find missing pets. The box is roughly the same size as a matchbox and is attached, for example, to dogs and cats collars. mykeeper consists of, inter alia, a GPS module and a wireless unit with a built-in SIM chip. The wireless unit relays the animal s movements continuously to the akquinet server via the mobile network. Telekom partner akquinet manages the data and places it at the user s disposal via an online portal and an app. A map reveals the animal s current location Akquinet visualizes the animal s location on a map. The owner can then track the pet s movements at any time on his or her smartphone. We felt it was especially important for the app to function on the move as the only way in which pet owners can respond swiftly and flexibly, says Tierchip Dasmann founder Jobst Dasmann. Via the online portal or the app, the owner can send an automated message to friends or relations to notify them that the animal is missing. The owner can also set transmission intervals. 13 Vodafone M2M solution provides intelligent remote monitoring Applications and References Service and maintenance contracts constitute an important part of machine and industrial plant manufacturers business activities and are a major cost factor. Typically, service personnel inspect machines and plants at regular maintenance intervals or receive calls from customers the moment a problem arises. If these intervals are not coordinated optimally, problems are often detected too late, which can lead to needless and expensive maintenance and repair costs and unhappy customers. If companies rely on automatic ma chine-tomachine communication, remote servicing and management processes can be stream lined to run more smoothly and efficiently. The customer s IT system receives data reports on the current status of its devices, and the reports are then interpreted by special monitoring software. With the support of remote M2M service solutions, manufacturers can devise and implement a round-the-clock system to monitor their machines and facilities and maintain them intelligently. M2M: Teamwork counts For an M2M solution like this to work reliably and effectively, all elements of the system must be perfectly in sync. Vodafone s Integrated Remote Monitoring & Control Service (IRMCS) is the first completely integrated all-in-one solution. This Vodafone M2M solution has three main elements: XX An M2M terminal to link machines and plants to the mobile network XX A wireless data connection via a global M2M SIM card XX An application that displays and analyses data Companies can choose from a selection of high-performance M2M terminals from Vodafone partners and can rely on Vodafone s excellent international mobile network for data transfer. Vodafone s global M2M SIM card works in all networks across the globe. Integrated RMCS guarantees a high level of transparency, as users can check the quality of their M2M connection on Vodafone s global M2M platform. This platform allows enterprises to activate and deactivate the SIM cards in their machines either via a web interface or automatically using the appropriate application programming interface. Real-time overview and automatic warning system The software components of RMCS constantly record all operating data from connected machines, providing a realtime overview, analysis and automatic documentation of their operating status. If an error occurs, the system sends a text message (for example) to alarm the service technician, shortening fault repairs considerably. The key element of the web-based software is a dashboard that provides an overview of the status of all the devices that are being monitored. A map view allows users to quickly see the current location of every single machine, to pinpoint possible problems and errors, and to access detailed information in just a few clicks. Logical logistics Efficient coordination and fast information exchange are also paramount to logistic operations. A large German logistics company is working with Vodafone to provide its customers with a solution for compiling, tracking and analysing fleet Vodafone terminal machine Link 3G available exclusively from Vodafone data from locations and manufacturers across the globe. M2M remote access makes it possible to retrieve and analyse data and to intervene in operation and production processes anywhere, anytime. Intelligent status monitoring and appropriate maintenance helps avoid extended breaks in operation and downtime and allows process optimisation. This cuts maintenance, service and energy costs, yields a quick return on investment, gives businesses a clear competitive advantage and results in happy customers! The M2M team is lead by Dr.-Ing. Tom Pfeifer. AV scientists are active in national and EU research projects, cooperate with industry, and maintain strong cooperations with Fraunhofer FOKUS and leading universities around the globe. The Wireless Logic benefit: with the cloud-based and cross-network SIM management and reporting platform (SIMpro) customers have 24/7 control of their SIM estates. Solution providers and integrators can also access the system thanks to multi-level client functionality. M2M Journal 16 13/05 19
