Review of Dimensional Analysis: Goal: The purpose of this review is to give the student practice problems in dimensional analysis. The student will be asked to solve a dimensional analysis problem. After completing the problem the student will be given the answer. If the answer is right, then the student may continue to the next problem. If the answer is wrong, then the student t can check their work by clicking on the word work. Problem 1: 583mm => meters Answer: 583mm =.583 meters WORK

Review of Dimensional Analysis: Problem 5: How may yards are Answer: 25 Kg = 25,000 g there in a kilometer? Given 1 yard =.914 m WORK Problem 6: 451dL => KL Answer: 451dL = KL WORK Problem 7: 67 in. => cm Given: 1 in. = 2.54 cm Answer: 67 in. = cm WORK

Introduction to the Metric System: A. There are four standard d units of metric measurement that we will be working with for this exercise. 1. These units will be used to measure length, volume, mass, and temperature. a. The unit for length is the... meter b. The unit for volume is the... c. The unit for mass is the d. The unit for temperature is... liter. gram. celsius.

Introduction to the Metric System (cont.): B. There are prefixes that can be attached to meter, liter, and gram that will change the value of the unit making it either larger or smaller. 1. The prefix kilo- increases the standard unit by 1,000 times meters = 1 kilometer 2. The prefix deci- decreases the standard unit by 10 times. 1 liter = 10 deciliters 3. The prefix centi- decreases the standard unit by 100 times. 1 gram = 100 centigrams

Introduction to the Metric System (cont.): 4. The prefix milli- decreases the standard unit by 1,000 times. 1 meter = 1,000 millimeters 5. The prefix micro- decreases the standard unit by1,000,000 times. 1 liter = 1,000,000 microliters

Introduction to the Metric System (cont.) C. The metric system is similar il to the measurement system used in the U.S except that it is based on multiples of Can you think of a measurement system in the U.S. that is based on units of 10? How about our monetary system? 2. The standard unit of American money is the dollar. a. A deci (1/10) dollar would be a dime b. A centi (1/100) dollar would be a penny c. A kilo (X1000) dollar would be a thousand dollar bill

Introduction to Dimensional Analysis: A. Dimensional analysis will allow us to convert one metric value into another. Lets turn 345 meters into kilometers or 345m =? Km 1. The first thing we need is a conversion factor. The conversion factor will be a fraction. There are three rules to creating a conversion factor. a. The old unit (in this case meters) goes on the bottom of the conversion factor. 345 meters X =? Kilometers meters b. The new unit (in this case kilometers) goes on the top. 345 meters X Kilometers =? Kilometers meters

Introduction ti to Dimensional i lanalysis (cont.): t) c. The conversion factor must be equal to 1. In other words the top must be equal to the bottom. d. A fourth optional rule is to make the larger of the two units equal to 1. (Remember 1000meters = 1 Kilometer) 345 meters X 1 kilometer =.345 Kilometers 1000 meters

Introduction to Dimensional Analysis (cont.): B. A conversion factor can be created to convert American units to metric units or visa versa. Lets change 5 pounds to grams. 5 pounds X grams (new unit) =? grams pounds (old unit) Table shows that 1 pound = 454 grams. We then put these numbers into our conversion factor. 5 pounds X 454 grams =? grams 1 pound 5 pounds = 2270 grams

Introduction to Dimensional Analysis (cont.): C. Some conversions may require two steps. For example 35cm =? Kilometers To perform this dimensional analysis we will convert centimeters to meters and then convert meters to kilometers. 35cm =? M =? Km Remember: 1 meter = 100 cm and 1 kilometer = 1000 meters 35cm X 1 meter X 1 kilometer 100 cm 1000 meters 35cm = 0.35 meters = kilometers

Introduction to Dimensional Analysis (cont.): D. Temperature conversions are easier because you do not have to create your own conversion factor. You can simply plug the number into the conversion factor provided. For example 100 o C =? o F To perform this dimensional analysis we will plug 100 into the equation: o F = (1.8 X ( o C)) o F = (1.8 X (100)) + 32 With all the units involved the equation would look like this: o F = (1.8 o F/ o CX(100 o C)) + 32 o F The o C cancel out and we are left with our answer: 100 o C = 212 o F

Introduction to Dimensional Analysis (cont.): D. Temperature conversions are easier because they do not involve a conversion factor. You can simply plug the number into a equation. For example 85 o F =? o C To perform this dimensional analysis we will plug 85 into the equation: o C = ( o F - 32)/1.8. o C = (85-32)/ o F = 29.4 o C

Introduction to Computers Throughout the course of the semester you will be required to utilize the science computer labs to access tutorials, lecture outlines, and other study materials. To do this you will need to be familiar with the workings of the science computers. A. How to the biology lecture tutorials: 1. If the teal screen without the log-in box is up simply move the mouse to the Biology folder and click. 2. If the log-in box is up make sure that the user name is lab_bio and that the domain is science1and press enter. 3 If this does not work consult the Computer Lab 3. If this does not work consult the Computer Lab Supervisor.

Introduction to Computers (cont.) B. How to find lecture and lab tutorials on Eucalyptus: 1. If the teal screen without the log-in box is up simply move the mouse to My Computer and click. 2. If the log-in box is up make sure that tthe user name is lab_bio and that the domain is science1 and press enter. 3. Move the mouse to the Classes on Eucalyptus icon and click. 4. Click on the Data folder. 5. Here you will find folders for Tobin and Dusheck, y, laboratory tutorials, and individual instructors.

Introduction to Computers (cont.) C. How to write and print out pre-labs: 1. If the teal screen without the log-in box is up simply move the mouse to My Computer and click. 2. If the log-in box is up make sure that tthe user name is lab_bio and that the domain is science1 and press enter. 3 M h li h bl W h f h 3. Move the mouse to light blue W at the top of the screen. This will get you into the Word word processing program.
