1 Orchard for DIBELS Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Correlations CORRELATIONS

2 The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) are a set of standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy development. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of prereading and early reading skills. The measures were developed upon the essential early literacy domains discussed in both the National Reading Panel (2000) and National Research Council (1998) reports to assess student development of phonological awareness, alphabetic understanding, and automaticity and fluency with the code. Each measure has been thoroughly researched and demonstrated to be reliable and valid indicators of early literacy development and predictive of later reading proficiency to aid in the early identification of students who are not progressing as expected. When used as recommended, the results can be used to evaluate individual student development as well as provide grade-level feedback toward validated instructional objectives. - As you will see by the chart below, Orchard for Your State software is closely correlated to the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBLES) benchmark goals. DIBELS Benchmark Goal Initial Sounds Fluency Definition: The ability to recognize and produce the initial sound in an orally presented word. Example of a DIBELS Initial Sounds Fluency activity: The examiner presents four pictures to the child, names each picture, and then asks the child to identify the picture that begins with the sound produced orally by the examiner. Phonics Sequences Orchard Correlation Orchard s Phonics Sequences Module A focuses on the following initial sounds: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, Y, Z, CH, SH, TH, and WH. The Match Picture to Letter activity within this module directly correlates to this benchmark by providing practice in initial sound recognition by requiring the student to select the picture that matches the initial sound. Sample screen from the Phonics Sequences Matching Picture to Letter activity Phonemic Awareness The Sound to Letter activity in Orchard s Phonemic Awareness Series (Levels A, B, and C) correlates to this benchmark by helping students develop their understanding of letter/sound correspondence. (In this activity, students are asked to click on the letter or letters that make the sound they hear.) 3 DIBELS Benchmark Goal Letter Naming Fluency Definition: The ability to recognize and name upper- and lower-case letters. Example of a DIBELS Letter Naming Fluency activity: Students are presented with a page of upper- and lowercase letters arranged in random order and are asked to name as many letters as they can. Phonics Sequences Orchard Correlation Orchard s Phonics Sequences Module A Alphabet A-M and Alphabet N-Z activities provide students with the opportunity to learn the shapes (upper- and lower-case), names, and sounds of the letters of the alphabet. These include: Letter Flashcards Alphabet/Sound Flashcards Picture Flashcards Alphabet Books Alphabet Pages Alphabet Bingo Example of a Alphabet/Sound Flashcard Phonemic Segmentation Fluency Definition: The ability to segment three- and four-phoneme words into their individual phonemes fluently. Example of a DIBELS Phoneme Segmentation Fluency activity: The examiner orally presents words of three to four phonemes. The student is then asked to produce verbally the phonemes for each word. Phonics Sequences Orchard s Phonics Sequences Module A Letter Slide activity correlates to this benchmark by providing students with exposure to three-phoneme words broken into segments. 4 DIBELS Benchmark Goal Nonsense Word Fluency Definition: The understanding of letter/sound correspondence and the ability to blend letters into words in which letters represent their most common sounds. Example of a DIBELS Nonsense Word Fluency activity: The student is presented with randomly ordered nonsense words and asked to produce verbally the individual letter sound of each letter or verbally produce/read the whole nonsense word. Orchard Correlation Phonemic Awareness The Sound to Letter activity in Orchard s Phonemic Awareness Series (Levels A, B, and C) directly correlates to this benchmark by helping students develop their understanding of letter/sound correspondence. (In this activity, students are asked to click on the letter or letters that make the sound they hear.) Sample screen from Phonemic Awareness Sound to Letter activity In addition, Orchard s component includes Sound/Symbol Books that target specific sound and symbol relationships such as initial consonants, long and short vowels, consonant blends and digraphs, and vowel digraphs and diphthongs. Oral Reading Fluency Definition: The ability to read connected text accurately and fluently. Example of a DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency activity: Students read a passage aloud for one-minute. Words omitted, substituted, and hesitations of more than three seconds are scored as errors. Words self-corrected within three seconds are scored as accurate. Reading Links The You Can Read Too activity in Orchard s Reading Links Series (Levels 1-5) directly correlates to this benchmark by providing multiple opportunities for students to record their own reading. Student recordings are then saved within the program manager so the teacher can easily obtain an oral reading fluency rate, reviewing the student s oral reading as many times as necessary to make correct decisions about accuracy. 5 Retell Fluency DIBELS Benchmark Goal Definition: The ability to comprehend connected text. Example of a DIBELS Retell Fluency activity : The student is prompted to retell the passage read for the Oral Reading Fluency activity in his or her own words. Guided Comprehension Orchard Correlation Orchard s Guided Comprehension Series (Levels 1-6) directly correlates to this benchmark by using a multi-step guided reading approach to expose students to a variety of comprehension strategies and techniques. This series also utilizes a v ariety of activities that offer the student multiple opportunities to strengthen their comprehension skills. They include: Let s Talk About It! a discussion group activity Survey Says a survey activity that records students responses to stories Quiz Show a game designed to test vocabulary knowledge Story Map a variety of graphic organizers activities Journal an opportunity for student reflection on what they have read Sample screen from Guided Comprehension Orchard s program also directly correlates to this benchmark with Leveled Readers and Retelling Scoring Forms. Here, students retell the books in their own words after reading. Then, using the Retelling Scoring Form as a guide, the teacher provide prompts if necessary and assigns each element a point value. (See Table 2 for an example of a Retelling Scoring Form.) In addition, each guided reading lesson is accompanied by a comprehension worksheet. The comprehension worksheet is generally a graphic organiz er designed to actively engage the reader in the reading process. 4
