2 This Master Degree is unique in its form. It is truly transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary in its approach while also having a global outreach. The students learn how to build a bridge between theory and practice and learn to govern on all professional levels by applying and through human rights. PROF. DR. ANJA MIHR, EXTERNAL PROGRAM COORDINATOR AND PROGRAM INITIATOR USING GOVERNANCE TO PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS The Master s program in Governance and Human Rights imparts the capacity for critical understanding and provides the students with the tools to required to assess and apply legal and political governance theories, as well as human rights norms and standards. The project learning tools will enable the students to acquire the skills to apply the good governance tools needed to establish, implement and protect human rights. This is a hands-on program, giving central importance to project-based learning. The students work is accompanied by international scholars and practitioners. The students will learn how to develop ideas and make meaningful contributions to social change. Furthermore, they will acquire the design and communication skills to adapt theoretical approaches to governance and human rights to their own professional working environments, e.g. as part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or sustainable development policies. Instruction and super vision is carried out by outstanding and renowned international human rights academics, practitioners and experienced project coaches. The Master s program is organized and run by the Leuphana University Lüneburg and the HUMBOLDT- VIADRINA Governance Platform, and is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. HANDS-ON APPROACH The Master s program is a 2-years distance-learning program with 3 classroom sessions (2 weeks each, taking place in Berlin or Lüneburg). Students will be supported by an online tutor who answers academic questions, supports the students during the learning process and endeavors to stimulate and moderate online discussions. In the course of the Master s program, you will be provided with skills which enable you to protect human rights using (good) governance tools. This truly interdisciplinary program also allows you to apply your newly learned skills in your individual governance and human rights-related project. As a graduate of the M.A. Governance and Human Rights, you will possess a comprehensive understanding of Governance principles and the means to critically examine them be acquainted with the various of human rights principles, norms and standards know how to apply governance principles in order to promote human rights be able to organize the work in for-profit businesses as well as in non-profit and non-governmental organizations, including issues such as funding, project management, etc. be prepared for the challenges associated with development aid and state building

It is not only the courses in which the tools are presented that impart these skills, but it is also the integrated practice-based project: concurrent to pursuing your studies, you work on an individual project relating to the practical application of governance and human rights in your particular profession. Over the course of four semesters, you acquire a total of 90 Credit Points (CP). The first semester focusses on the fundamentals of governance and human rights. You will also learn how to analyze complex problems. The second semester sees you expand your knowledge of human rights for special groups and getting acquainted with international law-enforcement agencies. Furthermore, in the module on Social Change: Campaigning, Social Media and Communication, you engage in the development and technical support of campaigns, as well as successful project management. In the third semester, you will look at human rights regimes for various regions and particular groups and learn how to protect human rights with the help of these regimes. In the fourth semester, you expand your practical skills even further, and together with your fellow students, you will select a specific issue and organize a conference to deal with this. During the entirety of your studies, you will observe the interactions between these two disciplines. The optimal balance between studying and working The M.A. in Governance and Human Rights is tailored to the needs of active professionals. A large portion of the lectures are held as distance learning sessions, the few attendance days total three attendance blocs. Intensively studious atmosphere During the time in the classroom, you can take advantage of the small study groups with a maximum of 25 fellow students. Furthermore, an online tutor is at your disposal to answer academic and administrative questions. Applications are accepted until July 1 st. Most seminars are held online. There is a total of three classroom sessions, each lasting two weeks, two in Berlin and one in Lüneburg (2nd half of the attendance phase). What prerequisites are required? The M.A. Program in Governance and Human Rights attracts and accepts interested professionals who already have a fi rst university degree (e.g. Bachelor), at least one year of relevant work experience, and advanced knowledge of English. How much does the course cost? The Master s program Governance and Human Rights carries a tuition fee of 9,500 EUR plus a semester fee of currently about 200 EUR per semester.
