2 MESSAGE from Honourable SYED MUMTAZ ALAM GILLANI Federal Minister for Human Rights, Government of Pakistan International Human Rights University is a unique project in our country to promote the culture of Human Rights, Human Dignity and Elimination of all kinds of torture and Discriminations from the society. Ministry of Human Rights will fully support and endorse this important institution in Pakistan to meet the 21st Century. This institute will promote Peace, Tolerance and will work on our social problems to make Pakistan as a safe and Peaceful country. I am looking forward to see it as an institution for promotion of peace in all over the world.
3 Introduction The university will contribute significantly in developing the human resources capital by using international standards of teaching and research. it will seek to impart required skills in its graduate to make them socially and politically literate about the world around them, while encouraging active and participatory citizenship at the local, regional, national and international level. The human rights university will organize teaching, research and advocacy in the field of human rights. Prof. Dr. Z. U. Khan OBE, FRSA Chairman VISION STATEMENT Dr. Khalid Aftab Sulehri Founder & President It will provide the theoretical foundations, practical knowledge and critical evaluative tools to understand respond and help shape national, regional and international socio-economic and political developments. The human rights university draws on the expertise of academics, advocates and activities working around the globe and has the experience of integrating human rights values with theirs respective disciplines. Economics, law and sociology. The university will provide necessary tools for integrating research and policy bring national and international scholars together and for improving the implementation of international human rights law. International Human Rights University envisions strengthening the ways and means for the promotion and protection of international human rights norms and fundamental freedoms to have a democratic world of lasting peace and prosperity. Why Study Human Rights? Pakistan is a signatory to many international human rights initially spelled out in the universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) have become increasingly important for the few ways in which nation states conduct their domestic and foreign affairs. At international level, politically and legally, both the sovereignty and pursuit of power based national interest s have become increasingly checked by the application of international, regional and national human rights norms and practices. International Human Rights instruments like Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination of Women (CEDAW) and Convention on the Rights of Child (CRC). There is a dire need to understand the significant linkages between democracy, development, human rights and fundamental freedom. Now the emphasis is on practical measures in the implementation of fundamental standards of humanity and finding ways to ensure that all concerned can easily review legislation and work for developing human rights culture.
4 Objectives To promote the culture of peace, security and stability through human rights education. To focus the direction of academic research on the analysis of social problems engendered by the social conflict and proposes solutions for their resolution. To strengthen and integrated the existing infrastructures within the community, so that human rights can be effectively monitored, violations recorded and the information shared and made public. To promote a democratic culture in the society through provision of a public space in which liberty of thought, opinion and expression can flourish and from which new ideas, alternatives and solutions can emerge for social transformation. To create a space of reproof to the National and International communities to illuminate the gravity of the situation and the necessity for action. To build relationships with academic and research institutions globally to seek solutions which ensure sustainability in every aspect. The Team The team of International Human Rights University will consist of; Human rights experts from a rich and diverse range of disciplines, experiences, expertise and backgrounds. Permanent academic staff with teaching and research interests in human rights will be members of the University. Fellows and Visiting Faculty members from beyond the university, because of their research and exceptions human rights expertise. The International Human Rights University will be overseen by a vice Chancellor of academic research and administrative staff. Programs: Taught Programs Undergraduate Studies in Human Rights. Master in Understanding and Securing Human Rights. Master in Gender and Human Rights. Master in Globalization & Development LLM in International Human Rights Law. 6 Month Diploma in Human Rights, Gender studies and Social development. 3 Month Diploma in Social Management. 3 Months Certificates in Social sciences. 3 Months Certificates in Research methodologies. 6 Months Certificates in Social problems. The university plans to initiate inter-disciplinary degree programs by combining Human Rights with relevant disciplines e.g. Political Science, Law, Behavioral sciences, Psychology, Anthropology etc. Research & Studies o The program aims to define, create and support educational activities and curricula that help teachers and students, in Pakistan and abroad, understand international human rights issues and build the capacities of future human rights activists. It will disseminate the valuable research through working group, public meetings, written products and other forms of research through working groups, public meetings, written products and other forms of research and analysis. Public Outreach o The office of the public outreach will strive to make the work of the students, teachers and researchers available to a wired range of audience including media, government and international agencies. Training The training program will build the capacities of the people working in the government, non-governmental and development sectors. It will offer interactive training's to acquire the skills to integrate the human rights norms in their respective fields.
5 Introduction to International Human Rights Observer (IHRO) International Human Rights Observer (IHRO) is working together with Government, United Nations and other institutions to promote and protect the basic fundamental human rights, declared in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to build a World of lasting peace, social and economic justice in the 21st century. We are an independent, non-political and non-governmental organization striving to stop human rights violations, upholding and implementing the rights of woman, children and minorities. IHRO has been focusing to create awareness about Human Rights through Education and Advocacy. IHRO with a strong network of 5700 volunteers, working nationally and internationally, has been documenting the abuses and giving the victims a platform to ensure that their voices are heard. IHRO, keeping in line with the United Nations Human Rights through Education decade has initiated the intimidating task of establishing an International Human Rights University in Islamabad. At IHRO, we strongly believe on the famous saying the few committed people can change the whole world. We acknowledge that it is an elevated project not only in size but also through its impact. By means of loyalty, perseverance and authenticity we aim to make international Human Rights University a center of excellence following international education standards, in the field of human rights.
