2 PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATOLICA del PERU: PUCP Field School Program Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru is ranked number one in Peru, one of the twenty-five best universities in Latin America and the only Peruvian university to be listed among the top five-hundred universities in the worl in the international rankings. PUCP strives on excellence, leadership, democracy, human rights and development, innovation and modernisation. PUCP Field School Program gives students the opportunity to learn indigenous rights and ecological engineering from lectures, coursework, workshops, field trips and intercultural learning. Peru is a country on the pacific coast of South America, full of wealth of history from the Inca civilization at Machu Picchu and Cuzco to a country among the world s richest produces of silver, copper, lead and zinc. Program Overview Insights into the 5,000 year history and culture of Peru Broaden your Spanish skills with locals Global learning with classes, workshops and field trips Homestays with local families to help improve your Spanish skills Intercultural learning Learn about the day-to-day activities of locals Additional cultural activities

3 Program Details PUCP Field School Program is a three four week programme. Over three exciting weeks, students will attend courses, experience the local culture and socialise with people with all around the world. Students can choose to study either Indigenous Rights and Legal Pluralism or Ecology Engineering. Attend 120 hours or 180 hours of lectures, workshops and field trips. Included in the program is: Expert knowledge in the field Participation in forums or public presentations Homestays to improve Spanish skills Extensive indepth learning with workshops and field trips All courses are taught in English. However, it is advisable for students to have a basic knowledge of Spanish in order to interact with the local population. You can choose to study in either the following subjects: Indigenous rights and legal pluralism Ecological engineering in Cuzco Cultural and legal pluralism Policies applied to indigenous people throughout the history of the Americas Globalisation and contemporary issues Green technologies Production technologies sowing, cultivation and harvesting Renewable energies International law on the rights of indigenous peoples and defence mechanisms Case-study of the native community Tres Islas against mining Field trip to the native community in the Peruvian Amazon

4 Program Dates 30 June 27 July 2015 Program Cost $3,000 USD for Indigenous Rights Course and $3,750 USD for Ecological Engineering. Travel Grants UTS BUiLD travel grants of $1,500 AUD are available for 8 students. Applications will be on a competitive basis. UTS BUiLD travel grants are ranked on the merit of the application statement. OS-HELP Loan Extra financial support can be gained by applying for an OS-Help loan if applicable. If applying for OS-HELP it is compulsory that students attend the OS-HELP workshop on 23 or 24 April INCLUDED IN PROGRAM COST: Tuition and study material Pick up from Lima International Airport Transportation to and from local hotel or homestays Accommodation in hotels or family homestays or at PUCP Ecological Farm with most meals Excursions and cultural activities organised by PUCP. Travel and medical insurance through UTS Travel Insurance Policy NOT INCLUDED IN PROGRAM COST: International airfares from Sydney to Peru Visa application costs Vaccinations costs Personal expenses and spending money

5 Who can apply This fantastic trip is open to 8 UTS:BUiLD students with: A keen interest in Latin American culture and a background in Indigenous Rights or Ecology Engineering. A current GPA of 1.5 or over. An easy going, flexible and independent character with a willingness to take initiative to learn. Willingness to work hard and adapt to different surroundings and work environments Strong team working skills Requirements If you are selected you must: Attend a pre departure session Represent UTS with distinction at all times during the program Submit at least two blog posts during the program to UTS to be used on the UTS:BUiLD Abroad Blog Submit a reflection piece to BUiLD on your return Complete a feedback survey on your return Academic Credit Students successfully completing the International Summer School may be eligible for academic credit towards their UTS course; 6CP electives only. You must complete a concurrent study form to your Faculty Student Centre and have it approved before being accepted on this program. Next steps Applications close on Monday 6 April 2015 at Midnight.
