2 GSWH Project -Datasheet Project Full Name: Global Solar Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative Project Short Name: Global Solar Water Heating (GSWH) Project Duration: 60 months, Start date: May 2009 Geographical scope: Global UNEP s Programme of Work (PoW) -PRIORITY AREA: To strengthen the ability of countries to integrate climate change responses into national development plans by helping countries make sound policy, technology, and investment choices that lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions with a focus on clean and renewable energy sources and energy efficiency

3 Main Objective Accelerate global commercialization and sustainable market transformation of solar water heating, thereby reducing the current use of electricity and fossil fuels for hot water preparation in residential, private service sector and public buildings and, when applicable, industrial applications More energy from sunlight strikes the earth in 1 hour than all of the energy consumed by humans for an entire year (World Energy Assessment Overview) World Solar Radiation Map

4 Expected Impact Installation of an additional 3 million square meters of SWH panels (compared to the expected baseline development) by the end of the country programs GHG reduction 14.9 million tons of CO2eq over 15 years Sustainable growth of these markets at the minimum annual rate of 20% (in total installed capacity)

5 Main Components The Project Consists of 2 Main Components: The Global Knowledge Management and Financial Mechanisms Support Component Country Programs Component in: Albania, Chile, Lebanon, India and Mexico

6 Why Knowledge Management? Knowledge Management is the discipline that will enable project partners and stakeholders more collectively and systematically : Apply Capture Store capture, store, share and apply their knowledge, to achieve the project objectives. Share

7 Knowledge Managment Strategy: Four Main Elements: Development of a web-based Knowledge Management System, which provides an easy access to the knowledge from different international initiatives, programmes and projects, as well as the information and knowledge collected from project s national and regional partner institutions. Compilation, analysis and development of the material for the KM tool through generation of Knowledge Products and Services; Knowledge Dissemination through the web-based KM tool as well as through the other networks and activities of project s regional and national partner institutions and other information channels (such as newsletters, workshops, public media, etc.); and Knowledge Enhancement, which is critical for ensuring that knowledge products and services are not only applied and used, but also further improved through such use.

8 Global Knowledge Component Main Outputs (1): KM Web-based Tool Knowledge Management System through a webbased tool: The (KMS) web-based tool was developed into modules/ blocks and is identified, organized and classified by strategic priorities and objectives defined in the project document, in order to make it aligned with the project activities.

9 Global Knowledge Component Main Outputs (2): Project Partners A network of international and regional agencies was established as a local/ regional interface for knowledge development and dissemination. 1) The International Copper Association (ICA) as a global partner; 2) the Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'energie (OME) covering South and East of the Mediterranean region; 3) the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) covering Latin America & the Caribbean ; 4) the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC) covering South and Southeast Asia; and 5) the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation covering Europe

10 Global Knowledge Component Main Outputs: Project Partners The Scope of work and activities that are carried out by the regional partners include the following components: 1. Information collection, and that will include for example: Lessons learned and Case Studies 2. Innovation Products, and will include... Development of technical and market Assessments Solar thermal Seizing and Modelling tools 3. Experts Roster and e-news Update 4. Dissemination/Training: Regional Workshops E-learning

11 Institutional Framework The project is overseen by a Project Management Committee (PMC) including the International Copper Association (as co-financing partner), UNDP and UNEP UNEP-DTIE monitor implementation of the activities undertaken across the UNDP executed country subprojects and the global knowledge management functions including aggregated progress reports for clearance through UNDP to the GEF The UNEP-DTIE is the co-executing agency with responsibility for global project management, monitoring and technical assistance components including financial instruments
