NOTE: This guide applies only to Stratus 1S, 2, 2S, and 2i. If you have questions about Stratus 1, Appareo support at support@appareo.com. Before you begin Many issues are resolved by updating to the current version of Apple ios, ForeFlight, and Stratus portable receiver firmware. Before starting troubleshooting, make sure that all applications are up to date by following the steps below. Apple ios: See ForeFlight: The most recent version of ForeFlight Mobile can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. To update: Tap the App Store icon on your ipad home screen. Tap Updates. Tap Update on any ForeFlight updates. Stratus portable receiver: To update receiver firmware: Go to the Stratus Status page. a. Tap Maps on the bottom navigation bar. b. Tap the settings icon located at the top left of the screen. c. Tap the name of your Stratus receiver under the Devices heading to open the Stratus Status page. If the pop up menu says Stratus Status at the top, you are already on the Stratus Status page. See if there is a firmware update available under the top Device heading. Tap Tap to Update to install the update if one is available. If there is not an update, you will see your current firmware version. Once your device is connected to the Stratus wireless network, a checkmark will appear next to the network name. Why can t I connect to my receiver? Verify that your receiver is turned on by checking the LEDs. If they are not on, complete the following: a. If using Stratus 1S, 2, or 2S: Push the button on the top of your receiver Page 5 of 11

6 b. If using Stratus 2i: Verify that the receiver is connected to a Stratus ESG that is powered on. Verify that you are connected to the Stratus Wi-Fi network and not another wireless connection. a. Tap the Settings icon on your ipad home screen. b. Tap Wi-Fi on the left navigation bar. c. Ensure that the Wi-Fi switch is enabled. d. Tap the Stratus wireless network name under the Choose a network heading. The represents your receiver s version, and the X s represent your receiver s unique serial number. Stratus 1S, 2S, and 2i have the wireless network name on the back of the device. Once your device is connected to the Stratus wireless network, a checkmark will appear next to the network name. Try forgetting the network and reconnecting. a. Tap the Settings icon on your ipad home screen. b. Tap Wi-Fi on the left navigation bar. c. Tap the information icon located to the right of the Stratus Wi-Fi network name. d. Tap Forget this Network. e. Try to reconnect to the Stratus Wi-Fi network again. i. Tap the Settings icon on your ipad home screen. ii. Tap Wi-Fi on the left navigation bar. iii. Ensure that the Wi-Fi switch is enabled. iv. Tap the Stratus wireless network name under the Choose a network heading. The receiver s wireless network name will be displayed as StratusVXXXXX, where the V represents your receiver s version, and the X s represent your receiver s unique serial number. Stratus 1S, 2S, and 2i have the wireless network name on the back of the device. Once your device is connected to the Stratus wireless network, a checkmark will appear next to the network name. Reset your receiver to factory settings. See below for factory reset instructions. How do I reset my receiver to factory settings? Press the power button on the receiver if the receiver is not already on. Press and hold the power button for approximately 30 seconds. The reset occurs when the LEDs flash green, then yellow, then green. After the reset, the power on sequence will begin. Why won t the receiver pair with my device via Bluetooth? You cannot connect to the receiver with Bluetooth; instead, connect via Wi-Fi. Tap the Settings icon on your ipad home screen. Tap Wi-Fi on the left navigation bar. Ensure that Wi-Fi is enabled (the Wi-Fi switch should be green). Tap the Stratus wireless network name under the Choose a network heading. The represents your receiver s version, and the X s represent your receiver s unique serial Page 6 of 11

7 number. Stratus 1S, 2S, and 2i have the wireless network name on the back of the device. Tap the information icon located to the right of the Stratus Wi-Fi network name. Tap Forget this Network. Try to reconnect to the Stratus Wi-Fi network again. a. Tap the Settings icon on your ipad home screen. b. Tap Wi-Fi on the left navigation bar. c. Ensure that the Wi-Fi switch is enabled. d. Tap the Stratus wireless network name under the Choose a network heading. The represents your receiver s version, and the X s represent your receiver s unique serial number. How do I get to the Stratus Status page? Connect your ipad to the Stratus Wi-Fi network. a. Tap the Settings icon on your ipad home screen. b. Tap Wi-Fi on the left navigation bar. c. Ensure that the Wi-Fi switch is enabled. d. Tap the Stratus wireless network name under the Choose a network heading. The represents your receiver s version, and the X s represent your receiver s unique serial number. Stratus 1S, 2S, and 2i have the wireless network name on the back of the device. Open ForeFlight Mobile from the ipad home screen. Go to either the Maps page or the More page. Maps page: a. Tap Maps on the bottom navigation bar. b. Tap the settings icon located at the top left of the screen. c. Tap the name of your Stratus receiver under the Devices heading to open the Stratus Status page. If the pop up menu says Stratus Status at the top, you are already on the Stratus Status page. More page: a. Tap More on the bottom navigation bar. b. Tap Devices on the left navigation bar. If you see a box indicating that your Stratus portable receiver is connected, then tap the box to open the Stratus Status page. Otherwise, you are already on the Stratus Status page Page 7 of 11

8 Where is there ADS-B coverage in the United States? Black dots indicate approximate tower locations. In areas that are blue, Stratus should function well with its built-in internal antenna at 1500 feet AGL and higher. In areas that border the blue regions, Stratus should function well with the addition of its available external antenna. In areas that are gray, Stratus might not function well. See more information at: Why won t the receiver charge? NOTE: This is not applicable to Stratus 2i, which does not have a battery and uses aircraft power only. If the receiver has completely run out of battery, initially, it might not appear to be charging. Wait 30 minutes for the receiver to show that it is charging. Verify that you are using a 2.1 amp charger. Most computer USB ports will not charge the receiver; laptops generally only supply up to 0.5 Amps of power through a USB 2.0 port. Try charging the receiver with the Stratus portable receiver cable plugged into your ipad charging block. Why am I not getting good ADS-B weather reception? Pixelation on the radar layer in ForeFlight is normal when receiving weather information while flying because ADS-B weather is low resolution. However, poor weather reception can be due to a number of other factors: Outdated ForeFlight or Stratus portable receiver firmware. o ForeFlight: The most recent version of ForeFlight Mobile can be found at To update: Tap the App Store icon on your ipad home screen. Tap Updates Page 8 of 11

9 Tap Update on any ForeFlight updates. o Stratus portable receiver: To update receiver firmware: Go to the Stratus Status page. a. Tap Maps on the bottom navigation bar. b. Tap the settings icon located at the top left of the screen. c. Tap the name of your Stratus receiver under the Devices heading to open the Stratus Status page. If the pop up menu says Stratus Status at the top, you are already on the Stratus Status page. See if there is a firmware update available under the top Device heading. Tap Tap to Update to install the update if there is one available. If there is not an update, you will see your current firmware version. For a video of how to update receiver firmware, see: You re on the ground. ADS-B doesn t work on the ground. You will only get ADS-B reception while in the air. Connection issues: Verify that the receiver is connected to the Stratus Wi-Fi network. Tap the Settings icon on your ipad home screen. Tap Wi-Fi on the left navigation bar. Ensure that the Wi-Fi switch is enabled. Tap the Stratus wireless network name under the Choose a network heading. The represents your receiver s version, and the X s represent your receiver s unique serial number. Stratus 1S, 2S, and 2i have the wireless network name on the back of the device. Once your device is connected to the Stratus wireless network, a checkmark will appear next to the network name. Coverage issues: Check the ADS-B map at to see if there is coverage where you are flying. Range or line of sight issues: o o If ADS-B LED is off: This indicates that you may have a range or line of sight issue. Make sure that you have line of sight with the towers. If you do not, your signal will be blocked. This could be due to physical obstacles such as mountains or flying at an insufficient altitude. If ADS-B LED is on: 1. Go to the Stratus Status page. a. Tap Maps on the bottom navigation bar. b. Tap the settings icon located at the top of the screen. c. Tap Stratus V (where the V represents your receiver s version), located under the Devices heading, to open the Stratus Status page. If the pop up menu says Stratus Status at the top, you are already on the Stratus Status page Page 9 of 11

10 2. Under the Data heading, look at Local Radar Update, Text Update, and Receiving From to see when you last received data. If signal quality is poor or you are not receiving from very many towers, check the coverage map at Stratus portable receivers are not functional in Canada, Mexico or any other country outside of the U.S. Note: A green ADS-B LED on the receiver only indicates that the device is receiving ADS-B signal, and doesn t directly indicate what weather you will see. Layer issues: Verify that you have the Radar layer selected on the Maps page. Altitude issues: You should be at an altitude of at least 500-1,500 feet AGL and below 20,000 feet AGL. Why am I getting poor GPS performance? You may not have continuous GPS lock. The receiver will not usually get GPS signal in places like office buildings or metal aircraft hangars. Make sure that the receiver is mounted in a way that it has a clear view of the sky (satellites). Why is there a red X over AHRS in ForeFlight? It depends on where the red X is located (applicable to Stratus 2, 2S, and 2i only). X over all GPS fields: You do not have GPS lock. The receiver usually will not get GPS signal in places like office buildings or metal aircraft hangars. Make sure that the receiver is mounted in a way that it has a clear view of the sky (satellites). X over only certain fields, such heading and altitude: The receiver is not detecting motion. X over all fields: There is a gyro/accelerometer issue. Try calibrating the AHRS display. See below for calibration instructions. How do I calibrate the AHRS display? AHRS can be calibrated both automatically and manually (applicable to Stratus 2 and 2S only). Automatically: After a few seconds, the receiver will automatically calibrate to the position it is in when it is powered on. Therefore, the receiver must be securely mounted before powered on. Manually: The receiver can be manually calibrated in ForeFlight. Go to the Maps page. Tap the split screen button at the top of the screen. Tap the gear icon. Tap Calibrate in the upper right corner of the Stratus Status box. Tap Zero Pitch & Bank to calibrate to straight and level. Otherwise, tap the arrow keys to manually adjust the alignment if your aircraft isn t straight and level. Tap Save in the upper left corner. Why are my LEDs flashing? It depends on which LEDs are flashing. Refer to the LED Indicator Status table in your Stratus Portable Receiver Pilot s Guide. If all of the LEDs are continuously flashing red, the receiver needs to be sent to the retailer from which you bought the receiver for evaluation Page 10 of 11

11 What are Stratus portable receiver warranty options? Purchased from Appareo: Warranty information can be found at Purchased from Sporty s: Contact Sporty s for warranty information. Your Stratus portable receiver is under warranty for one year from its ship date, regardless of where it was purchased. Your original retailer can look up the exact date of shipment. Why am I only receiving GPS and AHRS data? The receiver has not been authenticated within the last five minutes and it is only sending out flight-critical information. Ensure that you have the most recent version of ForeFlight and the most recent firmware on your receiver. ForeFlight: The most recent version of ForeFlight Mobile can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. To update: Tap the App Store icon on your ipad home screen. Tap Updates. Tap Update on any ForeFlight updates. Stratus portable receiver: To update receiver firmware: Go to the Stratus Status page. a. Tap Maps on the bottom navigation bar. b. Tap the settings icon located at the top of the screen. c. Tap the name of your Stratus receiver under the Devices heading to open the Stratus Status page.
