WEST HATCH HIGH SCHOOL THE BEST THAT I CAN BE Marking, Feedback and Assessment Policy Policy reviewed October 2015 Signed:

West Hatch High School Whole School Marking, Feedback and Assessment Policy At West Hatch we believe that regular feedback during and outside of lessons is essential in supporting our students to make outstanding progress in their learning. However, the form in which feedback, and assessment takes place must be specifically related to the individual subject being studied to ensure its effectiveness. To that end, we have developed a series of 10 guiding principles that all departments are required to adopt, although the form in which this adoption takes place is dependent upon the requirements of each individual subject area. These specific department requirements must be outlined within the individual departmental policies and adopted across the whole team of staff. The West Hatch guiding principles for feedback, and assessment can be found below: 1. The key purpose of feedback and is to promote progress and learning. 2. Feedback and must provide information on students progress for the school (progress data), for learners (feedback) and, periodically, for parents. 3. Summative assessment and formative assessment must be used as appropriate. The criteria for assessment should be shared and understood by all. 4. Students must be given the opportunity to reflect upon their own and others work, suggesting ways in which that work can be improved. 5. Feedback on next steps must be specific and personalised and must lead to some kind of action by the students if it is to lead to learning and progress. 6. Teachers must ask questions throughout to check student understanding and progress. 7. Time must be given in lessons for students to reflect upon feedback and consider how they will make progress in the future. Student responses must be completed in green pen. 8. Literacy is key to students accessing learning and must be supported through feedback and. Students must present their work neatly and clearly underlining titles and date consistently. 9. RAG sheets must be used each term to show how well students are progressing towards their personal targets. 10. The frequency and types of will be consistent within teams and in line with departmental policy. What can parents expect to see? Regular feedback that informs learning and progress. Clear guidance on what students have done well and how they can improve in the future. Students reflecting on and improving their work as a result of the questions or feedback they receive. Parents will not necessarily see every page in a student s book marked. Feedback and will be of high quality to inform learning rather than high quantity but less effective. How will it be monitored? Heads of Department (HoDs) will monitor half termly to ensure departmental consistency. The Senior Team (SLT) will receive feedback from HoDs during line management and termly department monitoring meetings. The SLT will monitor feedback and through the Quality Assurance Day and other lesson observations and termly department learning walks. HoDs will monitor feedback and through termly lesson observations. SLT, HoDs, and Heads of House (HoH) will monitor the quality of feedback and through regular learning walks throughout the year.

How often will What classwork will be How will marked/ graded ART DEPARTMENT MARKING, FEEDBACK AND ASSESSMENT POLICY Pupils work towards a project at the end of every term. Project work is marked at the end of the piece of work and also at a half term interval. Pupils work towards a project. Work is marked at the end of a project at a half term interval. This can be in the form of a variety of materials and techniques including painting, printing, crayon pictures and drawings in pencils. Pupils are always given success criteria before a project. Pupils may be asked to critique the work of a peer and reflect on these comments. Pupils will have a chance to reflect on what they need to do to improve. Each project is marked with an NC level/grade and targets with ways forward. Staff will verbally feedback to pupils on a lesson by lesson basis and will formally mark work via a RAG sheet at the end of a project. Pupils are always given success criteria before a project. How / when will students reflect on / feedback Remember they must use green pen. They compare their work with the success criteria and mark what they have learnt with a green pen. The self-assess and choose a target to improve. Homework Homework is set and marked with NC level/grade and targets approximately on a 4 week cycle. This includes 2 weeks to complete the homework. Assessments and RAG sheets RAG sheets are completed at the end of each project. Each Project is a term long.

Peer/Selfassessment Literacy Students reflect on theirs and others work via group critique and peer assessment activities. On occasions pupils will complete a short self-assessment i.e. independent target setting. Verbal feedback is given lesson by lesson. Students are also asked to discuss their work and of that of others. On occasions pupils are asked to complete a written assessment and literacy is marked when these activities are completed. Presentation We expect students to take pride in the presentation of their work. In all lessons students will be expected to underline all of their titles and dates. Students will also be expected to underline across the page when they finish a piece of work so that they can start the following lesson from the same place and therefore not leave large gaps in their work. There should be no other writing or drawing within any students books or folders that has not been required within their class/homework. Any specific department information The way in which pupils improve as a result of feedback involves refining and modifying a piece of work rather than creating a whole new piece.

BUSINESS & ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT MARKING, FEEDBACK AND ASSESSMENT POLICY How often will What classwork will be How will marked/ graded Mark in detail, two substantial piece of work every term for pupils Mark in detail, a substantial piece of work every 6 weeks for pupils; Exam practice questions that students undertake. BTEC Coursework Redrafted work as requested by the teacher Teacher assessed in line with exam board criteria; o Mark key pieces diagnostically, identifying strengths and setting targets relating to relevant criteria, which can be applied to future work and which promote pupil progress o Mark in a way which expects pupils to engage with feedback e.g. by asking questions, requesting some of the work be redrafted or setting an alternative task o Mark for literacy and expect pupils to make literacy corrections o Give grades for every unit of assessment. o Record relevant grades systematically for future reference Employ peer and self-assessment as strategies to improve pupils understanding of how they are assessed How / when will students reflect on / feedback Homework Capture verbal feedback (one-on-one) e.g. by asking pupils to record it in the reflection box using green pen Pupils to complete summary feedback sheet. They should identify key learning points Time for Reflection Improvement and Progress (T.R.I.P) will take place twice a term. At least 1 substantive piece of homework every half term linking in with the main syllabus areas that will focus on Knowledge, Application, Analysis and Evaluation. Share the success criteria against which work will be marked with pupils prior to their completion of a task For extended Writing, pupils should; Use appropriate key terms within context. Identify the business and economic problem of the scenario given. Use evidence from the extracts/assignment briefs/ world economy/ individual organisations to develop their responses Use P. E. E. E. L. for each paragraph. (Point, Explain, Evidence, Evaluation, Link back to the question)

Homework Marking/ BTEC coursework Use appropriate key terms within context. Identify the business and economic problem of the scenario given. Use evidence from the extracts/assignment briefs/ world economy/ individual organisations to develop their responses Use well labelled diagram (where appropriate) to support analysis. Show working of their calculation and use their final answers to develop response. If analysis should be considered in other to establish the different outcomes Develop a clear logical chain of reasoning when addressing business and economic issues Appreciate the unintended consequences of issues raised Use quotes to support analysis and evaluation where possible. Be able to form an opinion by comparing and contrasting issues (e.g. PLC vrs LTD) Use P. E. E. E. L. for each paragraph. (Point, Explain, Evidence, Evaluation, Link back to the question) Assessments and RAG sheets Peer/Selfassessment Literacy Pupils will sit a formal assessment approximately once per half term. This will be teacher marked and a RAG sheet provided which summarises the pupil s strengths on the topic test, and areas for improvement. Pupils will be given the opportunity to work on these areas, and questions will be set by the teacher to enable the student to demonstrate that they have made progress in these areas. These questions will then be reviewed by the class teacher. Peer and self-assessment will be used frequently. Share the success criteria against which work will be marked with pupils prior to their completion of a task. This helps pupils to understand the criteria used to mark their work, and accordingly to improve their own responses. Literacy will be marked using a pink highlighter pen. Pupils should complete all literacy corrections in green pen Presentation Any specific department information Pupils are expected to take pride in their presentation. All work should have a date, title and c/w or h/w in the margin as appropriate. These should be underlined. Pupils should write in black ink although other colours may be used for emphasis. A sharp pencil and ruler should be used for all diagrams, tables and graphs. All self and peer assessment and responses to teacher should be competed in green pen. Pupils should rule off after each lesson. BTEC Marking: Please refer to BTEC guidelines which allow for summative commentary on assessed work only.

Students are also able to watch back and reflect their own and their peers recorded performance work either in class or as homework on the school Vimeo (secure online video channel) account. This enables students to complete their D.I.R.T sheet reflecting on their performance skills and setting S.M.A.R.T targets for the next half-term. After their written exam mocks students will use teacher/peer to rework answers thus producing model answers. Practical improve performances responding to directors /peer notes. During preparation for practical performance work students will be given acting notes from their peers and the teacher to improve their work Written work (Exploration Notes; Theatre Reviews; Written Performance Concepts, Supporting Written Evidence Document and practice exam papers) students will be able to reflect on and rework drafts following teacher/peer input and guidance prior to final submission. When practical tasks are given, the outcome is usually evident eg Bring in/make a prop After a performance students will access the school Vimeo (online video app) account via Show My Homework to make comments which will be monitored by staff. Teachers may also give written group feedback. Practical tasks are set to prepare students for the next lesson. For example - learn lines, research into text and character. After a mock Paper 1 Written Exam one model question set for homework per week this is marked by the teacher and returned for improvement until a high standard of exemplar work is achieved to aid preparation for the real exam. Notes are to be kept on a weekly basis, as homework, checked every 2 weeks. Coursework drafts will be marked by the teacher and returned within 2 weeks Practice questions for Unit 4 written paper will be student and peer assessed using the exam board scheme for facilitate students being able to get inside the head of the examiner. Drama D.I.R.T sheets completed every half term are equivalent to the school RAG sheets At the end of every term a printed teacher summative assessment will be given to each student with specific targets for them to work on the following term. Personalised Learning Check lists based on the practical skills required for examination will be given to students at the 2 weeks before the final assessment performance. Personalised Learning Check lists based on the skills required to develop for examination (Voice, Movement, Characterisation, and Communication) will be given to students at the end of every half term. When work is presented students feedback to each other in class orally using What Went Well and Even Better If. On the reverse of DIRT sheet students reflect on and comment of the work of others, this is fed back in class for their peers to set targets. Students can film and watch back key sections of their rehearsals to self- evaluate. They present work to their peers for comment and notes prior to the final performance. Performances are recorded giving students the opportunity to self and peer assess using exam board criteria. Self and Peer of exam papers using exam board mark schemes. Green pen is used to indicate peer. Students regularly share their practical work to gain peer/teacher oral feedback and assessment. Use of Self and Peer of mock exam questions using exam board mark schemes. Green pen is used to indicate peer.

Literacy Oral feedback to correct pronunciation and grammar in the spoken word. SPAG checked in submitted drafts and Key Words corrected in all students written work. Presentation We expect students to take pride in the presentation of their work. In all lessons students will be expected to underline all of their titles and dates. There should be no other writing or drawing within any students books or folders that has not been required within their class/homework. Any specific department information The drama department is very strong at giving verbal feedback on performances and giving students the opportunity for peer assessment. After every performance students are given teacher feedback as well as receiving peer comments that are extended through teacher questioning. We encourage students to use Drama terminology and explain their point of view in detail. This is expected from and prepares students for giving higher quality verbal peer feedback during their /5 exams, as well as within their writing. The department is also strong at regularly referring to assessment criteria and encouraging the students to reflect on their capabilities to enable them to set targets, informing them of how to get there. Staff give detailed formative feedback of written exam work, however we are looking to extend the time that is spent on making given improvements. The department is also reviewing the assessment criteria so progression can be more evident. As students do not have drama books.

Classwork will also be marked for Spelling Punctuation and Grammar or will be peer assessed by the students Short answer exam questions and essay questions will be marked against the exam board criteria. All self and peer assessment will be carried out in green pen. Teachers will provide comments when assessments using personal learning checks. Teachers mark in red pen and will provide students with both a grade and targets based on the personal learning checks. Teachers may also provide additional tasks to encourage students to meet their target. Teachers will highlight students work with a pink highlighter ( pink for think ) in order to encourage students to think independently about how they could make improvements/corrections to their own work. The majority of classwork will be peer assessed or self assessed using green pen. For extended case study questions or exam style questions, these will mostly be teacher marked in red pen, with both a grade and targets based on the personal learning checks. Teachers may also provide additional tasks to encourage students to meet their target. Teachers will highlight students work with a pink highlighter ( pink for think ) in order to encourage students to think independently about how they could make improvements/corrections to their own work. The teachers will make comments in red pen which are consistent with the mark scheme for their unit of the course and will provide both a mark and a grade. Students will respond to comments in green pen and act on targets set in green pen. A grade will not be offered to encourage the students to look at the teachers advice. Teachers will write questions in the margins where work is inaccurate to assist the students in finding the correct information or to stretch and challenge the students towards higher level answers. Teachers will also write P E E in the margins to indicate where students are using PEE correctly in their work or P E? E? to indicate where the paragraph needs development. If they are source questions they may make comments on the students use of Cause Content or Context in their answer. The teachers will make comments which are pertinent to the mark scheme for their unit of the course. Students will record these comments in an assessment feedback grid which will be kept in their folders and allow them to track their progress. Teachers will write questions in the margins where work is inaccurate to assist the students in finding the correct information or to stretch and challenge the students towards higher level answers. Remember they must use green pen Students will use FIX IT FIVE TIME to answer the teachers questions in green pen. They will also look at the teachers questions and PEE CCC coding to set themselves 5 targets on how to improve their classwork.

Homework An extended piece of writing or exam style question will be set once every 3 weeks by the teacher the above principles will be followed. At Keystage 3 this can include the assessment which will inform their report which will be graded by the teacher. At key stage 4 it will include exam style questions that may be set as part of their revision. Assessments and RAG sheets When termly assessments are marked students will review the teachers questions and comments on their work to fill in 2 targets on the departmental RAG sheet which will also include the mark scheme to allow students to reflect on how they can they can improve their grade. Peer/Selfassessment students will always fill in a peer assessment crib sheet on their termly assessments to allow them to reflect on their work. They will then be given a homework to improve their assessment before the teacher marks and records their level. At students will peer assess their termly tests in green pen before handing it in to the teacher. At students will peer assess their homework and assessments where appropriate. Students classwork will also be peer assessed at intervals by students using green pen and student comments will be made under the headings of What Went Well (WWW) and Even Better If(EBI).
