2 Ratinale Feedback/Marking is the prcess whereby children are infrmed abut what they have achieved in their learning and what they need t d t imprve. Feedback is a psitive frm f cmmunicatin based n learning bjectives and success criteria. It can be verbal, written, pictrial r signals and culd be frm teacher t pupil, teaching assistant t a pupil, pupil t teacher r pupil t pupil. Principles Marking and feedback shuld: If pssible be immediate r as sn as pssible. Be manageable fr all teaching staff. Invlve all adults in classrm. Be seen by pupils as useful and psitive. Infrm future planning/targets. Be accessible and inclusive. Relate t learning bjective and success criteria. Be respnded t by the pupil. Assessment fr Learning 1. Explicit Learning Outcmes Effective learning takes place when learners understand what they are trying t achieve and why it is imprtant. Staff shuld always cnsider the cntext and share either the cntext r purpse with pupils, where apprpriate applying it t real life. It is imprtant that pupils knw the Learning Objective (LO) t the lessn as this gives a fcus enabling pupils t review their wn prgress and t see if they have achieved the bjective. The learning bjective shuld fcus upn the learning t be achieved nt activities t be cmpleted. Helpful learning bjectives stems include t knw and t be able t 2. Success Criteria (Steps t Success) Clear success criteria fr each lessn will prvide pupils with a framewrk against which they can fcus their effrts, evaluate their prgress and discuss their learning. Visual success criteria keep everyne fcused. The lessn shuld be structured arund a clear learning bjective and linked success criteria. It is expected that fr English and maths a LO and SC bx will be stuck int each pupils bk. Pupils will be asked t assess their wrk against the LO and SC and make a respnse if suitable. Page 2 f 5

Questining We value the imprtance f questining and ur key purpse is t develp learning and extend thinking. Key questins including prmpting, prmting and prbing are used. Wait r think time is essential t give all children the pprtunity t think and respnd. Talk partners are used t help children rehearse r scaffld their answers and t be inclusive. Teachers use a variety f ways t ensure 100% engagement f pupils in the lessn and d nt slely rely n hands up e.g. lllipp sticks fr randm selectin, apps r sftware that select pupils at randm. 4. Reflectin/Plenary Time needs t be built in t the lessn fr structured reflectin; this allws pupils t mnitr their wn prgress in meeting the learning bjectives and allws them an pprtunity t check which success criteria are evident in their wrk. Fr example using cmments such as the fllwing: Find ne example yu are really prud f and circle it. Tell the persn next t yu why yu are pleased with it. Decide with yur talk partner which f the success criteria yu have been mst successful with and which ne needs help r culd be taken further. Yu have five minutes t find ne place where yu culd imprve. Write yur imprvement at the bttm f yur wrk. Lk at the prblems yu have slved tday. Where were yu successful? What apprach did yu take? Page 3 f 5
4 5. Feedback The purpse f AfL is t prvide feedback in such a way that learning will imprve as a result. Teaching staff will need t identify next steps in learning as well as respnding t mistakes. Feedback will always be cnstructive and sensitive. Feedback will cmment n the wrk rather than the pupil. Mini whitebards are regularly used in class as a way fr staff t quickly assess pupil prgress thrughut the lessn. We recgnise the value f self and peer assessment. Teaching staff will emply their wn strategies fr self and peer assessment and staff use when apprpriate. Pupils will be given regular pprtunities t edit their wrk in respnse t marking. Pupils will use their plished purple pens t edit the basic blue marking and the grwing green next step. 6. Marking Marking is nly f value if cmments are read and respnded t. Teaching staff will usually check pupils wrk within the classrm envirnment s that feedback is immediate and direct t the pupil. When wrk is distance marked (marked withut the pupils being present) teaching staff must allw time fr pupils t read and respnd t marking, this may be at the start f the next lessn. A piece f sustained writing will be assessed per teaching cycle (genre type). This will be marked against the pupils assessment ladders and infrm their banding. This will prvide evidence f pupil prgress in meeting their individual targets. These levelled pieces f wrk will require detailed marking Highlighters will be used t mark pupils wrk. Grwing Green and Perfect Pink. Pink will be used where pupils have demnstrated evidence f achieving the Learning Objective and Success Criteria. Green will be used t indicate the pupils respnse needs t grw and requires further wrk in rder t demnstrate the SC and achieve the LO. S these need t relate directly t the LO and SC. Basic blue will be used t mark spellings and individual targeted English skills (capital letters, full stps etc). Pupils will then edit their wrk in their plished purple pens. 7. Marking cmments. The expectatin is that each piece f maths and English wrk will be marked and prvide a psitive cmment (relating t a perfect pink success) and a next step relating t a grwing green hi-light. The next step cmment shuld allw pupils t respnd t the marking. e.g (www) Yu have successfully used cmmas in yur list. (Next step) Nw please g back t the hi-lighted sectin and re-write it using cmmand language. Pupils shuld then be given the pprtunity t respnd t the marking either during the lessn r at the beginning f the next lessn. Pupils shuld write in purple pen/pencil fr this. Page 4 f 5
5 8. Nn-negtiables Each pupil shuld have a set f nn-negtiable targets that supprt the develpment f their basic English writing skills. E.g capital letter, full stps. These shuld be referred t in marking using the pink and green hi-lighters. Appendix Page 5 f 5
