1 City University of Hong Kong Department of Architectural and Civil Engineering Autumn 2015 Night View from Victoria Peak Johannes Mayer. Eduard Nuñez Garcia,

2 What factors motivated you to go? Everyone has different motivations to go abroad for a period of time. I guess my motivations were based on the wish of experiencing something new. And Hong Kong was the right place to learn about a completely different culture, we can say that almost everything is different. We were also able to learn from an educational system which was new for us. At the same time it was interesting to visit Asia since nowadays China is one of the new emerging superpowers in the world. Things to remember before taking off After having done all organisational affairs and it now comes to taking off you should remember to have the most important things. You need a valid passport with a student visa (since we were traveling before going to Hong Kong we could not wait for the visa to arrive in our home countries and therefore told the international office to keep them until we pick them up in the office), a travel insurance, your laptop, one travel adapter is useful for the beginning and clothes. Don t worry if you forget smaller things, you can buy everything easily in HK once you are there. Moreover, the university offered a free ride from the airport to the university. If they continue with this service you have to tell the university when you are supposed to arrive so you definitely have a seat in the coach. Information before and after arrival / procedure / practical assistance on arrival CityU of receives a large amount of new exchange students each semester, therefore they are really efficient and helpful when it comes to paperwork and different procedures. The university will send you all the time s explaining the steps to be followed in order fulfil the different required processes. There is even an App which is filled with important information and can be used to process some applications and so on. My best advice would be to read carefully all the s and follow the indications given in those. As simple as that! The courses We attended the following courses: CA4412 Construction Management II CA4415 Value Management CA4630 Building Design & Appraisal CA4723 HVAC Engineering Elective I SEE4116 Energy & Carbon Auditing Each course corresponded to 5 ECTS. Housing / housing type / communication (how did you find accommodation?) This is an important point. Basically two things will happen, either you get a place in a residence hall (at the university campus) or you have to get your own accommodation somewhere else.

3 Under my point of view, staying on campus is a lot better due to the following reasons. It is much cheaper, Hong Kong is among the 10 cities with the most expensive real states in the word. It is much convenient since the campus is placed just beside the university, meaning that you can get to the university by walking 10 minutes maximum. It is a nice place to socialize with other students and hang out during the evenings. The system for deciding the room assignments is first come, first served. Therefore, be aware about the application opening and be fast! Academic support/ guidance Generally speaking, the support and guidance at CityU is amazing. The minute we arrived in HK students, who voluntarily worked as mentors, helped us sorting out every kind of problem. Furthermore, they set up an introduction programme to guide us through everything we had to do, such as getting a student card or finding the way to our classrooms. In the beginning we also had problems with our courses since some were cancelled or overlapped. However, the people working for the department helped us to work out a solution for this. Experiences It is nearly impossible to describe a city like Hong Kong. But I strongly recommend everybody who has the chance to go there: GO THERE! The contrasts between old and new and metropolis and nature are incredible. It is also one of Asia s hubs, so it is pretty easy to get somewhere else from here. Moreover, it is a very good place to meet people not only from Europe but from all around the world. Cultural differences Certainly there is a huge difference between the European and the Asian culture. However it is important to remember that Hong Kong was a British colony for a long period. Even if Hong Kong officially belongs to China, it would be a mistake to think about them as an equal. The Brits had a big influence over the Hongkongese. Therefore it is a perfect place to experience a unique combination of two different cultures, being Hong Kong the melting pot. Asian people are in general really respectful towards others, which makes things easier. All you need to do is to show back some respect and enjoy learning from another culture. Grants and scholarships received We only obtained the faculty grant offered by Aarhus University which provide us with 5000 kr. However, it the amount of money might vary from one person to another. From CityU it is possible to apply for a grant if you attend the School of Engineering, unfortunately we did not obtain it. It is also possible to apply for other private grants and scholarships, but you will have to do some research on your own. Insurances If you want to stay in Hong Kong you need to have a health insurance. Check if your insurance covers traveling as well since it is very likely that you will visit more countries once you are there.

4 Expenses It depends a lot on your way of living how much money you are going to spend each month. But it is very possible to live on a budget. You can go to buy to groceries to Taste (closest supermarket) which is really expensive, or on the other hand you can buy food in other supermarkets which are more affordable. It is possible to go to restaurants and pay easily 300 DKK for a meal, but at the same time it is possible to get good food for around 60 DKK. Public transport is rather cheap, as student you will get a 50% if you are under 26. And the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) works perfectly. So if you get on-campus accommodation I would say that for 5000 DKK per month you can survive pretty well. Then you might want to spend some extra money on travelling and other activities.
