Artists throughout the centuries have used the human form as the subject for their work. Behind the sculptures, paintings and designs are a series of investigations that support these pieces. Preliminary works, such as detailed sketches of the human form for paintings or sculptures allow the artist freedom to experiment before committing themselves
2 to expensive or time consuming pieces. It also develops personal skill and style. This brief will give you a strong introduction to the skills necessary in Art & Design and will address units 1 and 2. The skills demonstrated in the studio could include tonal drawings, structural drawings, colour mixing, structural wire work, papier mache, and surface treatments. Ideally you will extend this work through independent study. We are asking you to explore your identity by using materials, processes and technical skills in art and design. You will be shown a series of processes and techniques that will investigate specific skills that are essential to a working artist or designer in 2D and 3D, through these you will create a body of work that is inspired by the human form and your personal interests. What you have to do: You will be given an introduction to the various workshops and resources available in the art school and you must record these processes and the health and safety requirements associated with them. You will need to photograph the process and write notes in your Technical file For unit 2 you will learn the skills needed to research the theme, each session will have research topics; artists and art movements that support your practical work which will be given to you. This is your Contextual Research and will be recorded in your Contextual File. You are expected to research and record these topics and relate them to your own work using them to inspire and generate ideas. Initially your project work should include Artist research, drawings of yourself, your friends and your most treasured things, photos of your family or your home. These will develop your mark-making skills in 2D and be useful to further your knowledge of 3D materials and making skills, creating a series of 2D outcomes, annotated sketchbooks and 3D maquettes and models that explore the theme: YOU! After your first assessment point you will be expected to draw upon your research and new skills to produce a finished piece of your own design. Timetable of Tasks: Week /09/12-28/09/12 Materials, Techniques, Processes and Contextual Research You will be shown some basic processes using 2D and 3D skills in the studio; these need to be recorded in your sketchbooks with the associated health and safety requirements (Unit 1, 1.1, 1.2 &1.3). You will need to begin your contextual research independently using the
3 learning centre. (Unit 2, 1.1)Begin a sketchbook and collect relevant items to draw or make from. These items should relate to you, your family or mean something personal to you. (Unit 2, 1.2,1.3) Friday 28/09/12 Formative assessment deadline 4.00pm All work must be handed in to J10 for assessment you will sign a form to authenticate your submission Week 4: 01/10/12 Assessment week During this week the lecturing team will assess your work. You will not be expected to attend this week except for a feedback tutorial on Thursday or Friday. You should use this time to design a final outcome of your own design by revisiting your most successful technique from the first three weeks. Week 5-6: 08/10/12-19/10/12 Resubmission Catch up or Finished Piece This is the last two studio weeks on the project; If you were unsuccessful in the first assessment you have this time to rework your project for the final deadline. Otherwise you will work in the workshops to produce a finished piece of your own design, this piece will be part of a small exhibition, the group will vote for the most successful piece and the winner will receive a prize. 7 Disclaimer IMPORTANT: You must pass both units of the Level 2 Award in Art and Design in order to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design. If you fail either of these first units, you will be referred, which means you will be given a new date to re-submit your work for assessment. This is normally two weeks from the date we notify you that your work has failed, which will be 19 th October in this instance. You will receive a tutorial to advise you on what you need to do to improve your work, but if it fails this second assessment, you will not be allowed to progress any further and will be withdrawn from the course.
