5 I have loved art and being creative as long as I can remember. After leaving school I chose to follow a career working with animals but after four years I found myself looking for a career change, and knew that it had to be within a creative industry. Graphic Design at The Gordon allowed me the freedom to explore my own personal style of design and is extremely flexible. As students we were given many opportunities outside of the TAFE, from attending art exhibitions and viewing commissioned art and to being a part of real design jobs. I found attending design conferences and visits to graphic design studios to be a highlight. I completed my second year placement at local Geelong agency Circle Media and currently work with another Geelong agency, Moo Media as a junior graphic designer. I work on a wide range of graphic design jobs as well as promotional video work. I also freelance with clients, many of which I was introduced to during my time at The Gordon. Emma McLoughlin Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design, 2014 I chose to study fashion because I love everything about it! I grew up watching my mum sew, and in my later years of high school it was always my priority. I was really lucky that my school had such a great textiles/art program, supported by VET in Schools at The Gordon. I ve had a lot of memorable moments during my time at The Gordon, but my favourite would have to be the study tour to Shanghai, Hong Kong and ShenZhen. We had the opportunity to see the world of fashion from the other side. The different machines and technology was amazing to see. We also had the opportunity to shop for resources which we would use for our future ranges. Recently I have become a racing fashion addict. It s a combination of my two favourite things: fashion and horses. After studying millinery with Rebecca Share I now love making hats just as much as dresses. There are so many details to a racing fashion outfit, and I love the styling that goes into each event. After I graduate I would like to run my own business. I would like to see myself making ready-to-wear clothing, suitable for the races and other events. 7 Floristry Design SFL30110 Certificate III in Floristry Campus Mode Duration/Attendance Intakes Apply via Geelong City On-campus FT: 1 yr Feb, Jul Direct application Geelong City On-campus PT: 2 yrs Ongoing Direct application Workplace Apprenticeship PT: Up to 3 yrs Ongoing Employer The course equips you with in-depth skills in floral design and construction, floral display, and visual merchandising. You also develop strong industry skills and knowledge including sustainable work practices. What will I learn? All aspects of the industry are covered to prepare you for a successful career including: Care, preparation and display of floristry stock Creation of designs using a range of classic and contemporary techniques and mediums Floral and flower art Botanical designs Working to floral design briefs Bridal and wedding flowers and bouquets Floristry products, selling and industry technology You also have the opportunity to participate in floristry and merchandising competitions, specialist flower workshops, industry visits and field trips. What are my study options? This course is delivered in two ways: On-campus (full-time or part-time). Apprenticeship, where you are employed as an apprentice within the floristry industry. Attendance As a full-time student, you can expect three days of attendance per week. Part-time attendance is two days per week, according to timetabled units. As an apprentice florist, you work and learn in the industry for 2-3 years, and attend The Gordon one day per week over two years. Entrance Requirements/Prerequisites Applicants must be aged 17 or over Applicants are expected to have language, literacy, numeracy and communication skills to at least Year 10 level. Apprenticeship applicants must be currently employed under a training contract and referred by their employer, through an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider. Selection Mode (on-campus study) Compulsory information session Interview At the interview, applicants will be asked about their understanding of the floristry industry and to discuss their current skills. Applicants will also be assessed on previous educational records, as well as work and other relevant experience as identified on their application form. What will I learn? Develop your technical, creative and conceptual skills to create design solutions for a range of client requirements and visual communication challenges. What can I do when I finish? Upon successful completion, you may choose to complete the CUV60411 Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design with a further year of study. You could also pathway to Deakin University with guaranteed entry and credit for prior learning into the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Communication Design). Our graduates have also achieved similar credits into degree programs at other universities. As a student or graduate, you may also be eligible for membership with the Design Institute of Australia. Attendance You can expect approximately four days of attendance each week. What will I learn? This is a hands-on course where you combine your time between the classroom and a range of industry and workplace environments. During the course you will: Interpret design briefs and develop solutions for design projects Research interior design and decoration influences Research, analyse and apply colour for interior spaces Recommend furniture and accessories Explore and apply a creative design process in 2D and 3D formats What can I do when I finish?
