4 STUDENT CENTER 394 LENOX ROAD, BROOKLYN, NEW YORK The Student Center Governing Board is pleased to present its semi-annual Mini-Course Program to members of the SUNY Downstate community. Faculty, students and staff are invited to enroll in one or more of these noncredit courses. Whether to improve an existing skill or explore a new field of interest, we think you will find the offerings exciting and worthwhile. REGISTRATION: Register Wednesday, January 13th, through Monday, February 1st, at the Student Center Main Desk. All payments must be made in full at time of registration. NO SLOTS will be reserved without payment. WHO'S ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL IN A MINI-COURSE? Downstate Students/Alumni and their families are welcome to participate in the Mini-Course program. To register for a Mini-Course, each participant must have an active membership at the Student Center. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO BECOME A STUDENT CENTER MEMBER? Downstate Students/Alumni including children and/or spouse. Downstate Employees including children and/or spouse. Please bring your current SUNY Downstate ID card, along with your Student Center membership card when you register. Payments may be made in cash or by check payable to SAF. Note: Retain the receipt of payment. The receipt is required for admission to the first session of each class. MANY CLASSES FILL! REGISTER EARLY TO AVOID BEING CLOSED OUT OF THE CLASS OF YOUR CHOICE. REFUND POLICY: Refunds will be given only if a class does not meet its minimum enrollment requirements and is cancelled. NO OTHER REFUNDS WILL BE PERMITTED. Please choose courses carefully. No refunds will be issued due to academic conflict or personal scheduling issues. 4

6 Swimming with Anthony C. Anthony Christopher is a Downstate Alumnus who has been teaching swimming to Student Center members for the past 30 years. Anthony has years of experience in stroke technique and development, and wishes everyone a great Fall swim season. Questions? Contact: aaochristopher@yahoo.com ADULT INTERMEDIATE Tuesday Mornings Pre-requisite: Swimmers should be comfortable with basic freestyle and backstroke. Advanced stroke improvement in these two disciplines will be offered as well as introduction of the Breaststroke. Please contact instructor prior to registration for any questions regarding swimming pre-req. CHILD BEGINNER Tuesday Evenings Learning essential techniques in both freestyle & backstroke, the beginner class is a great way to introduce your sons and daughters to the beautiful art of swimming. Basic survival strokes and water treading will be touched upon as well. 7 ADULT BEGINNER Wednesday Mornings Adults wishing to learn proper freestyle and backstroke techniques to compliment their dry land exercise routine, can join this fun yet instructional class. Basic treading techniques will be taught along with breathing methods to relax the novice swimmer. Day: Wednesday Time: 7:15-8:00 a.m. Enrollment: Min: 4; Max: 15 Start date: 2/3 Class dates: 2/3, 2/10, 2/17, 2/24, 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23 ADULT ADV. BEGINNER Wednesday Evenings Pre-requisite: Completion of a Beginner class. The purpose of the Advanced Beginner course is to increase the comfort level & watermanship of the individual by adding to the skills learned in Beginner Swimming. Emphasis will be placed on building stamina, basic coordination & skill refinement. 8 Swimming with Fjoraldi Fjoraldi has been a lifeguard at SUNY Downstate Student Center for more than five years. He has been helping many members with advice on improving their swimming skills. Swimming is a deep passion of his, especially after a knee injury from playing professional soccer. Swimming became an excellent recreational activity to maintain good shape. Questions? 10 Swimming with Michele Michele Wilson, MPH, is currently certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, Water Safety Instruction, CPR and AED with the American Red Cross. She currently works in STAR program as a Trainer/Program Coordinator in the Office of Clinical Education. Michele has been involved in aquatics for over 25 years and loves to work with all levels of adults who seek to develop a positive relationship with water. Questions? Contact: michele.wilson@downstate.edu Part II For Women-Only Thursday Evenings As requested, this class is for women who are already comfortable in the water and would like to be more independent in their swimming ability.by the end of this class, you will be able to complete 1 lap of continuous swimming (across deep water), tread water independently for 1 minute and relief stroke when needed. Pre-req: Must be comfortable with submersion in shallow water and able to glide and kick six-feet. This course is for women only. Please note: a male lifeguard will be used. Defensive Swimming Thursday Evenings This class will teach water safety navigation and build endurance. By the end of this class, advance beginners and intermediate swimmers will know what do dow when they get tired and how to function in deep water when necessary, including deep-water breath control and treading water for two minutes. Pre-req: Must be comfortable swimming 10 yards independently, using arms and legs together. This class is open to both women and men. Day: Thursday Time: 5:30-6:15 p.m. Enrollment: Min: 4; Max: 15 Start date: 2/11 Class dates: 2/11, 2/18, 2/25, 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 4/3 NOTE: Due to instructor s schedule these classes will start on 2/11. 11 American Red Cross Lifesaving Certification Gezim Simixhiu since 2006 he has been American Red Cross; swim instructor, lifeguard instructor, as well as American Heart Association Faculty Trainer for Bls, and ACLS Instructor. Health and safety is his passion. Questions? Visit his website: With an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate you can get a part-time or summer job. You'll develop new skills and learn how to deal effectively with people, responsibility, and leadership. Course materials incorporate the most recent science applied to Lifeguard skills, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and the use of the A.E.D. Prerequisites- Ability to: 1. Swim 300 yards continuously using either front crawl or breaststroke with rhythmic breathing. 2. Swim 20 yards front crawl or breaststroke, retrieve a 10-pound object from a depth of 7-10 feet, return it to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object within a designated of 1 min 40 seconds. 3. Tread-water for 2 minutes without using arms (kicking only). Course Certification: Payment of the course fee is not a guarantee of certification. To receive this American Red Cross certificate, which is valid for two years, you: Day: Saturday Time: 10:15 a.m to 5:45 p.m. # of classes: 4-27 hours total /Reading Room Fee: $410 Enrollment: Min: 4; Max: 15 Start date: 2/27 Class dates: 2/27, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19 Must be present for the entire course. Successfully complete all required skills. Pass a multiple choice written exam at 80% or better Dress comfortably for pool and classroom; there will be classroom work and pool sessions each day. CPR & First Aid skills are practiced on the floor in a kneeling position and require mobility. Towels not provided, but available for rent in the Student Center. 11

12 POUND Fitness with Nicole Nicole Primus-Henry believes that fitness is a journey that should always incorporate FUN! Nicole began leading group fitness classes as part of the NYC Parks & Recreation: Shape Up NYC fitness program, teaching Cardio kickboxing and Cardio sculpt classes in the Flatbush neighborhood. She is a certified group fitness instructor with AFAA and completed the Pound Pro training and certification to be able to share this fun, rock-out workout with you! Nicole works with the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health at Downstate Medical Center. Questions? Through continual upper body motion using lightly weighted drumsticks, called Ripstix, you'll turn into a calorie-torching drummer, POUNDing off pounds! The workout combines easyto-follow (not complex or embarrassing) cardio moves with strength training and drumming. This combo works the entire body, raises the heart rate to a fat-burning zone, and forces each move to be as precise as a basic beat. *Note: Your class fee includes your own set of Ripstix to keep! 12

13 Zumba Fitness with Anna Z. Anna Zheng is a Resident in Family Practice and a Graduate of SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. She has loved ZUMBA for more than 10 therapeutic years. She wholeheartedly believes in the fitness program for both stress relief and weight management. Anna is certified in ZUMBA Basic and group fitness instruction through AFAA with a side focus in nutrition and health. Questions? Try Zumba! Dance away the stress and let the cardio party begin. You can burn 500 to 1,000 calories in one class! And you don t need rhythm or any dance experience. So what are you waiting for?! You have nothing to lose...except calories! Zumba is a dance fitness class based on international rhythms and moves. All levels welcome! 13

14 Open Hip-Hop with Josel Josel Ruiz is currently a Master of Public Health student at Downstate. Josel has always been passionate about the performing arts. As a child, she participated in off- Broadway shows and spent a year in a national tour of The King & I. She studied at the Alvin Ailey American Dance School for 12 years in various techniques including ballet, West African, and modern dance. With the Hunter College Dance Company for three years, she focused on modern dance and hip-hop. Josel has co-directed and choreographed for dance teams, such as Hip-HopOlogy, in which she performed in showcases, competed, and taught workshops. She strives to share dance as a means of building positive communities, selfconfidence, and healthy lifestyles and hopes to one day incorporate dance into her preventive healthcare career. Questions? This course introduces students to basic aspects of hip-hop dance, including breaking, toprocking, isolations, popping, and waving. Students will also learn routines and choreography aimed towards improving physical strength, flexibility, and coordination. No previous dance experience needed. This course is open to all levels. 14

15 Lunchtime Yoga with Sonia Alignment Based Slow-Flow Sonia Reiter teaches vinyasa classes with emphases on smart sequencing, a steady organic pace and precise alignment instruction. Her goal in every class is to help her students feel calmer, clearer and more at ease in their bodies and minds. She has practiced yoga since 1999 and has taught since She has amassed over 500 hours of teacher training and has taught at Yoga Journal conferences on both coasts. Sonia danced professionally for over ten years and continues to teach children's dance in addition to teaching Yoga. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Occupational Therapy. Questions? In this class, you will practice the fundamentals of yoga including postures, breathing exercises, and flowing sequences. Repetition and detailed instruction will give new students a chance to learn the basics and allow more seasoned students to refine and deepen what they already know. Each class will cultivate physical strength and flexibility, while soothing the mind and unraveling stress. Expect to challenge your body, get a little sweaty and leave each class feeling relaxed and renewed. Please note: while plastic gym mats will be provided; it is recommended that students bring their own yoga mats. 15
