1 8 th Grade HEMS Related Arts Course Registration ONLINE FORM Due to the HEMS on or before: FRIDAY, MAY 13. The only paper form this year is for Spanish I Honors (see below). Otherwise, students will be registering for their related arts courses online at home. Students who do not have online access at home may complete the online form at school. Students may access the google form by going to: NOTE: Once the form is filled out and submitted, it cannot be submitted again. Students must enter the following information on the online form and may need to write it down if completing the form at school. Parent/Guardian Name Parent Ph # Parent Important Reminders: 1. Band and Spanish I Honors are year long courses. Band is a major course, but Spanish is a minor course. However, Spanish I Honors, unlike other minor classes, meets every day. Spanish I Honors is an academic class for which students may receive high school credit. Note: Students taking Spanish I Honors as a minor may not be able to participate in Youth in Government, Model UN and/or Science Olympiad as they meet at the same time, unless those activities are meeting before/after school. 2. Students wishing to take Spanish I Honors must fill out the admission paper form. This is the only paper form you will need for related arts registration (if you re taking Spanish I Honors). 3. Art, Choir, Music and Theatre are semester courses (18 weeks). For Example you may choose Choir for 1st/2nd quarter and Art for 3rd/4th quarter. You may not split semester classes: e.g. 1st Theatre, 2nd Spanish, 3rd Computer, and 4th General Music. 4. P.E. and Computer go together as a major class and will occur in the same semester if scheduled. P.E. for one nine weeks and Computer the next nine weeks (or vice versa). 5. All students must take at least one P.E. class. Minor P.E. classes do count. 6. You may only take P.E./Computer once. However, you may take another P.E. class as a minor course. 7. Have alternate choices in mind. This is very important because your first choice classes may be unavailable (Class descriptions below)

2 8 th grade Course Descriptions Majors Art: Do your fingers itch to make beautiful and interesting things? Interested in expressing your thoughts and ideas in images? Art class will include: clay sculpture, assemblage, painting, drawing, mask making, and more. Semester Course. Band: 8 th Grade band is designed to be a building block for all previous 7 th Grade Band students. Students will participate in school and local concerts, 8 th Grade Exhibition, MTSBOA Concert Festival, Rodeo Parade and other venues. There is a $100 fee for participation and information regarding instrument rental is available. Yearlong Course. Choir: Choir will help you learn to sing various styles of music, from pop to traditional, and perform in a group setting. You will also have the opportunity to audition for the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association s honor choir. This is a performance based class with some after school rehearsals and two performances. There is a $25 fee for this course which includes your t shirt and covers music cost. Fall Semester Course only. General Music Want to develop and expand your musical skills? Work with rhythms, pitch, composition and arranging, music theory, and contemporary music. Various projects during the semester include, but are not limited to, Percussion and/or STOMP ensemble, Theme & Variations on popular song, Let s ROCK history of Rock n Roll and project. We may also participate in the 8 th grade variety show and/or Hillstock as a class. Spring Semester Course only. PE/Computer: Ready to exercise your mind and body? P.E. will cover basic health concepts as well as athletic skills, and gameplay units (fitness, volleyball, soccer, floor polo, flag football, basketball, bowling and cooperative games.) Computer Class will cover advanced features of various Apps, evaluation of Web 2.0 sites, and 21st Century Technology Assessment Skills. 9 Week Course for each. Theatre: Is onstage your favorite place to be? Theatre class will include: Improv, Advanced Acting, Play Writing, Tech (incorporating sound/lighting), and Directing. Semester course. Video Production: Do you enjoy shooting and editing with video? Or being on camera? Would you like to take it to the next level? Students will create news style videos that will be shown weekly to the entire school. Semester course. Minors Spanish I Honors : Spanish I Honors meets daily during the minor s time slot, but is a year long academic class. Please see the Spanish I Honors form for more information. Computer Programming: Students learn basic programming skills and techniques using Scratch 2.0 Programming for Teens. Students create interactive animations and more. Future Teachers: Interested in teaching? Gain a realistic understanding of the nature of education and the role of the teacher. Work with small groups and/or individual students in K 3 classrooms.

3 Beginner Guitar: For Beginning Guitarists. No experience or guitar needed, but you may use your own guitar. Learn basic chords and strumming patterns to play some of your favorite songs! Learn how to tune and read guitar tab. Jewelry Making : Learn various techniques and designs to create beautiful and unique jewelry! Students will learn about materials and different processes and brainstorm art making ideas. Music and Film: Learn about the relationship between movies and their soundtracks. Create your own movie and soundtrack! PE Plus: Learn alternative game play units and skills such as golf, lacrosse, tennis, Frisbee golf, and PE Olympics. PE Plus Girl Power: PE tailored for female students with an emphasis on team sports as well as individual activities and skills, such as fitness, gymnastics/tumbling, volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Photography: Learn how to take awesome photographs! You may bring your own camera or use a school camera! Theatre Production: Go behind the scenes of HPAC! Learn set design (sketching, building, painting), prop design, tech (light and sound design), advertising, and set organization. Theatre Makeup: Learn about the different types of stage make up and how it is used/applied for performance. Students will create theatre make up designs and learn how to apply it to their own faces. Decades: Travel back in time to experience the trends, music, TV, movies, and pop culture from the 1920s to 2000!

4 8th Grade Spanish I Honors Program Students may elect to take a high school Spanish I Honors class during the 8 th grade. This is a year long honors level class and students will receive one high school credit on their transcript. Upon successful completion of the course students will start high school with either Spanish II or Spanish II Honors. Some points to keep in mind if you are considering Spanish I Honors: Most students do not start high school classes in 8 th grade; the majority of students wait until high school to take the required 2 years of foreign language. Your child will be taking a sixth academic class; Make sure that he/she is willing to give the time and effort necessary to keep up with work in the core classes and extracurricular activities, as well as this additional high school class. Also, please consider that your child may be taking accelerated English and/or Algebra 1 and adding Spanish I Honors is a very large workload. Spanish I Honors will take place during the minor/intervention time and meet everyday for a full year. Students are expected to take at least Spanish II and III at the high school level According to high school guidance counselors, most colleges/universities are looking for at least 2 years of the same foreign language to occur within 9 th 12 th grade. Taking this class does not exempt them from a foreign language in high school. High school counselors are a good resource to speak with if you are considering the pros/cons of your student starting high school Spanish in 8 th grade as they can provide insight on how this impacts a student s schedule and historically how students have progressed at high school.
