INTRODUCTION One in every two adults age 30 and older suffers from periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease. Periodontal disease can lead to receding gums, bone damage, loss of teeth, and can increase the risk of other health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Despite its prevalence, periodontal disease is hardly ever discussed, resulting in a lack of urgency for people to properly care for their gums. Approximately 65 million Americans are affected by periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that, if left untreated, may cause damage to the tissues and bone surrounding the teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 65 million Americans are affected by periodontal disease. In addition to diabetes, periodontal disease has been linked to other chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer s disease and even cancer. Periodontal disease typically does not cause pain until it s in an advanced stage, at which point much of the damage has been done and tooth support destroyed. To aid in the prevention of periodontal disease, Dr. Owens recommends establishing good oral hygiene habits including brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. Each patient is unique and Dr. Owens will discuss a customized treatment plan for you. Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria in the mouth that form plaque below the gum line. There are more than 500 bacterial species that can be found in plaque, and brushing alone does not remove the bacteria that live below the gum line. Poor oral hygiene is a primary cause of periodontal disease, but smoking is also a significant risk factor in the development and progression of the disease. While periodontal disease is mostly preventable and treatable, the early warning signs can be painless, leading to a lack of urgency in people to establish adequate oral hygiene habits or to discuss their periodontal health with a dental professional.

Periodontal disease is genetic in my family, so I m taking extra precautions.

PERIODONTAL DISEASE SELF-ASSESSMENT QUESTIONNAIRE Use the following questions to see if you may have some of the signs and symptoms indicative of progressive periodontal disease: Yes No Do your gums bleed when you floss or brush your teeth? Are your gums red, tender, or swollen? Is pus visible when you press on your gums? Do your teeth appear to be getting longer? Is your gum line uneven when you smile? Are the roots of your teeth exposed and sensitive to hot or cold? Can you wiggle one or more of your teeth with your tongue and fingers? Are there spaces between your teeth where there were none before? Has there been a change in how your partial denture(s) fit(s)? Do you have bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth? Is your mouth often dry or burning? If you answered YES to any of these questions, you may have some form of gum disease. Call us today at for a complimentary evaluation. Early detection and treatment are key, and you owe it to yourself to keep your healthy smile!

" Excellent location and a great staff. I would recommend this office to anyone requiring periodontal care.

RISK FACTORS Most American adults have some form of gum disease but are unaware of it. The main risk factors for periodontal disease include: Age Smoking Substance Abuse Diet Stress Menstruation Pregnancy Menopause Genetic Factors MEDICAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH PERIODONTAL DISEASE Diabetes Heart Disease Prescription Medications ORAL HEALTH RISK FACTORS Oral Hygiene Poorly Contoured Restorations Tooth Structure Wisdom Teeth

I had no signs or symptoms of gum disease. I was 29 when I was diagnosed. Dr. Owens and his team took great care of me.

LINKS TO SYSTEMIC DISEASE Several theories exist to explain the link between gum disease and other health issues. Large amounts of gum disease causing bacteria can enter the blood stream and travel to other parts of the body. Harmful bacteria from the mouth have been found in the heart, brain, lungs, and even placenta of pregnant women. These particular bacteria are not normally found in these locations under healthy conditions. As your body tries to get rid of this foreign bacteria, the potential for other health problems such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease, and pregnancy complications increases. CANCER OSTEOPOROSIS STROKE RESPIRATORY DISEASE HEART DISEASE KIDNEY DISEASE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS DIABETES ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION PRE-TERM/LOW BIRTH WEIGHT BABIES

My health was declining and I didn t know why until I saw Dr. Owens.

FACTS ABOUT GUM DISEASE CONTAGIOUS You can transfer gum disease through kissing and can also pass it to your children by your sharing of eating and/or drinking utensils. SILENT Symptoms may not appear until advanced stages of the disease. CHRONIC Our bodies work 24/7 to combat the bacterial infection of gum disease, leaving us vulnerable to other diseases. SCALING AND ROOT PLANING This treatment includes scaling to remove plaque and tartar deposits beneath the gum line. The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth the root surface allowing the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. In some cases, the occlusion (bite) may require adjustment. Antibiotics or irrigation with anti-microbials (chemical agents or mouth rinses) may be recommended to help control the growth of bacteria that create toxins and cause periodontitis. This may be done to control infection and to encourage normal healing. When deep pockets between teeth and gums are present, it is difficult for Dr. Owens to thoroughly remove plaque and tartar. Patients can seldom, if ever, keep these pockets clean and free of plaque. Consequently, Laser Periodontal Therapy or surgery may be needed to restore periodontal health.

I had bad breath and was afraid to talk to people. I didn t know that was a sign of periodontal disease. Now, I get cleanings every three months.

LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY Laser Periodontal Therapy is a laser based approach to gum disease. The reasons we use this technique are to: We are always striving to stay progressive. Therefore, we offer laser gum therapy the alternative to scalpel and suture gum surgery. Dr. Kris Owens was the first periodontal practice in the Austin area to offer this state-of-the-art technique. It requires no scalpels and no sutures. Remove only the diseased gum tissue without removing any of the healthy gum tissue Maintain the height of the gum tissue around the teeth Minimize discomfort Control periodontal (gum) disease and make it possible to save and restore otherwise hopelessly involved teeth that would have to be extracted. CONTINUING CARE Continuing care is a way for you to protect your dental and general health. This regular treatment helps to prevent or minimize the recurrence and progression of periodontal disease. The mouth is examined and any new tartar and/or plaque is removed. If the disease returns, careful monitoring increases the likelihood of locating it and treating it in a timely manner, before tooth-threatening bone loss becomes uncontrollable. A commitment to continuing care is a commitment to better health.

My teeth are in great shape after Laser Therapy. I highly recommend it.

AESTHETIC CROWN LENGTHENING Although your teeth appear short, they may actually be the proper length. The teeth may be covered with too much gum tissue. We can correct this by performing the periodontal plastic procedure, crown lengthening. During this procedure, tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This can be done to more than one tooth, to even your gum line, and to create a beautiful smile. If necessary, this procedure sets the stage allowing your new veneers or crowns to have the correct length and shape, giving you a new smile with just the right look. ROOT COVERAGE This complex encompasses multiple procedures that are available to stop and prevent gum recessions by reinforcing the tissue, or to improve the aesthetics of your gum line after gum recession has occurred by covering the roots back up. Gum recessions lead to exposed root surfaces and long looking teeth. Exposed root surfaces can sometimes be sensitive to hot and cold foods and liquids. They may also be more susceptible to decay and the accumulation of bacterial plaque because of the uneven gum line. Gum recessions may occur for different reasons, including aggressive tooth brushing and/or periodontal disease. Other factors such as individual tooth misalignment and tooth movement may also play a role in the development and progression of recession. Prior to treatment, Dr. Owens will help you to identify the specific factors contributing to your periodontal problem. Once these factors are controlled, a soft tissue grafting procedure will be done to either repair the present gum defect by covering the roots, or to prevent additional recession and bone loss by reinforcing the gum line. Soft tissue grafts can cover exposed root surfaces to reduce plaque accumulation because of an uneven gum line, thus protecting it from new decay. It can also reduce tooth sensitivity by covering the exposed root surfaces. An even gum line improves the aesthetics of your smile and allows you to speak and eat with comfort and confidence.

" I have some gum recession and needed to find out about a graft. Dr. Owens was so nice and really took the time to explain the procedure to me. I'm so glad I was referred to them.
