3 BRAZILIAN ALCOHOL PROGRAM 1973 Second international oil crisis President Gen. Ernesto Geisel took term 1975 Government announces the creation of the Brazilian Alcohol Program to reduce dependency of imported oil, offering fiscal incentives to automakers and long term financing programs for alcohol mills
4 GENERAL MOTORS DO BRASIL Has always supported the PROÁLCOOL First Phase June 1979 launched the small Chevette powered by an alcohol engine, followed by other car models January 1981 launched an engine powered by alcohol for trucks Second Phase Launched the Corsa Classic 1.6 powered by an alcohol engine Astra 1.8 powered by alcohol
5 THE MARKET FOR ALCOHOL-POWERED VEHICLES Until 1988 total dominance of vehicles running with alcohol near 100 % Early 90 s shortage of alcohol production Customers return to use gasoline again Demands target production Industry does not put cars on shelves Customer is the king of the market 1992 GM do Brasil in partnership with Robert Bosch began research to develop the first Brazilian vehicle to use flex fuel engine. The Chevrolet Omega 1994 was the first car to run with both alcohol and gasoline

12 Global Renewable Fuels In U.S., GM has 2 million FlexFuel E85-capable vehicles on the road. Building >500,000 more every year. In Brazil, FlexPower is now available in every passenger car model. FlexPower models account for 90% of sales. In Sweden, Saab leads the environment-friendly car segment with BioPower, accounting for 85% of Saab sales.
