Making a Mobile Application with the Compact Framework 2.0 Andrew Cain Swinburne University of Technology Faculty of Information and Communication Technologies P.O. Box 218, Hawthorn, Victoria 3122, Australia acain@swin.edu.au 1 Introduction In this walk through we are going to look at developing an application to run on a PDA using the.net Compact Framework version 2.0, and Visual Studio.NET Machine and Device Setup In order to use Visual Studio.NET 2005 Beta 2 for compact device development, you must have installed the DMA Transport Update for Visual Studio.NET 2005 Beta 2. This update will greatly simplify the task of connecting Visual Studio.NET 2005 Beta 2 to the device emulator. Without this update you will need to ensure that you can get the TCP/IP transport working, which can be troublesome. If you must connect using TCP/IP refer to the documentation related to the final release of Visual Studio.NET 2005 at The remainder of this walk through will assume that you are using the DMA Transport. 2.1 Setting up Visual Studio.NET 2005 In order to test your compact framework projects you will need to ensure that the device emulator is running correctly. The first step toward this is to configure the emulator in Visual Studio. Run Visual Studio and open the Tools - Options menu. Select the Device Tools - Devices options. These options are illustrated in Figure 1. Perform the following steps to check the configuration of the device emulator: 1. Select the Pocket PC 2003 SE Emulator. 2. Press the Properties button. You should see the properties as shown in Figure Make sure the transport is set to DMA Transport 4. Check that the Bootstrapper is set to Device Emulator Startup Provider. 5. You can configure the appearance and other emulator options by pressing the Emulator Options... button. The defaults should be ok as they are. Now that you have checked the device emulator settings, you can get the emulator running. 1
2 Figure 1: Device Options in Visual Studio Figure 2: Emulator properties
3 2.2 Connecting to the Emulator Once you have setup the emulator in Visual Studio, you can launch the emulator. The best way to launch the emulator is to use the Device Emulator Manager. To launch this tool use the Tools - Device Emulator Manager menu item as shown in Figure 3. The Device Emulator Manager will load as shown in Figure 4. Figure 3: Launching the Device Emulator Manager Figure 4: Device Emulator Manager To connect to the Pocket PC 2003 SE Emulator, right click its entry in the list and select Connect. This will launch the emulator, which may take some time to load. Wait for the OS to boot in the emulator, and for the Device Emuulator Manager to connect. Figure 5 shows the state of these applications when this is complete. Once you are at this stage you are ready to
4 get started developing software for compact devices. Figure 5: A connected device 3 Hello Compact World Return to Visual Studio, and create a new device project. Figure 6 shows the dialog used to create this project. For this walk through you can use the following details. This will take a little while to setup, but when done you should see the new project, solution, and a Pocket PC design surface as shown in Figure 7. Project type: C# - Smart Device - Pocket PC 2003 Project template: Device Application Name: HelloCompactWorld Solution name: Compact Framework Getting Started Now that the design surface has loaded you can create a simple Hello World application. 1. Change the Text of Form1 so that it is Hello World. This appears as the caption on the form. 2. Add a label to the top of the form. 3. Clear the label s Text property. 4. Add a button below the label. 5. Change the button s Text property to Say Hello 6. Add an event handler to the button s Click event (double click the button). In this handler set the Text of label1 to Hello World.
5 Figure 6: Create a device project Figure 7: The device design surface
6 7. Build the solution and make sure there are no errors. 8. Run the application using Debug - Start without debugging or use Ctrl-F5 (debugging will be very slow). 9. The project will compile and then show the deploy dialog shown in Figure 8. Figure 8: Deploy to the emulator 10. Choose the Pocket PC 2003 SE Emulator, and press Deploy. This will start deploying the project to the emulator. 11. When the deloy succeeds, switch to the emulator and test the application. You have now seen how easy it is to develop a simple application for the PocketPC. In the next section we will look at how we can change and redeploy the application. 4 Making changes Return to Visual Studio and make the following changes to the form: 1. Add a textbox and label that prompt the user to enter their name. 2. Change the Say Hello button s functionality to display Hello and the name the user has entered into the textbox. 3. The form should appear as shown in Figure Build the project, then deploy as before. 5. You are most likely to get an error when you try to deploy. The error will appear as shown in Figure 10. To correct this you need to stop the application from running in the emulator. 6. Switch to the emulator 7. Close the application, if you haven t already done so. This does not stop it running, so there is still more to do. 8. Click the Start menu and select Settings (see the manu in Figure 11). 9. Change to the System settings using the tab at the bottom of the screen. See Figure 12.
7 Figure 9: The second version of the form Figure 10: Error deploying to device
8 Figure 11: The Pocket PC menu Figure 12: Pocket PC System Settings
9 10. Click on the Memory option. 11. Switch to Running Programs using the tab at the bottom of the screen, see Figure Select the Hello World entry and press the Stop button. This will terminate the program. You must remember to do this when you want to deploy a new version of the software. Figure 13: The running programs 13. Close the settings windows on the Pocket PC and then return to Visual Studio 14. Run the application again, this time the deploy will succeed. 5 Debugging You can also debug compact framework applications using Visual Studio.NET Insert a breakpoint into the Say Hello button s event handler and then run the application using the debugger (the shortcut is F5). You will see that this takes a little longer to deploy and start, but once started you can use the normal features of the debugger. You need to stop the debugger manually once you have finished testing the application. 6 Conclusion Developing applications for the Pocket PC is almost as easy as developing standard windows applications. This walk through has shown you the steps that you need to follow in order to get started developing compact applications.
