1 Volunteer at Miramar Ranch Elementary School! You are welcomed and encouraged to become a school volunteer! There are many volunteer positions in your child s classroom or helping the Family-Faculty Association (FFA) with programs or events to benefit all of our children. In order to protect and assure the health and safety of our students, any person who wishes to volunteer in a classroom, attend a field trip or work with students or the FFA needs to complete the volunteer clearance process. How Do You Become A Volunteer? Step 1 o Complete a Volunteer Application A New Application is Needed EVERY School Year Volunteers will need to complete a Volunteer Application and return it to Lisa Kane-Charles in the school office. Please allow 2 weeks for application processing and for your volunteer badge. If you plan on attending fieldtrips with your child (ren), it is recommended you get this done in the very beginning of the school year. If you plan on driving your vehicle please complete the entire application, even if you previously submitted a volunteer application. o Complete Tuberculosis (TB) Testing (See reverse side for TB certificate & test sites) All volunteers are required to provide proof of a recent, negative TB test or chest x-ray before volunteering at the school site. A TB test is good for 4 years from the testing date. You may have one completed by your family physician, visit one of the San Diego Health Service Centers, or one of the TB test clinic days held at MRE. A TB test requires two visits - one visit for the nurse/doctor to administer the test, and a second visit (48-72 hours later) to have the test read and must be done within the past sixty days (older results will not be accepted) of the date of the application. Please submit your results to Lisa Kane-Charles in the school office. If you are a returning volunteer, please submit your application first and wait to see if you need to get another TB test. Remember they are good for 4 years, so you do not have to obtain one every year. Step 2 o Sign-up to volunteer in your child s classroom and/or with the FFA Find a volunteer position that interests you either through your child s teacher or posted on the school website. During the first few weeks of school, you will find sign-up sheets listing volunteer opportunities in front of the school and at Back to School Night. Step 3 o Receive your Volunteer Badge Once you have completed and submitted all of the necessary volunteer paperwork and received the proper clearance, your name badge will be produced and can be picked up in your child s classroom. You may begin to volunteer once you receive your badge and have been instructed by your child s teacher, usually after Back To School night. It takes about 2 weeks to get your badge. All volunteers must sign-in at the school office and wear a Volunteer Name Badge whenever they are on campus. If you have not gone through the volunteer clearance process you will be considered a visitor on campus and will not be permitted to work directly with children or go on field trips. If you have any questions about volunteering, please contact: Lisa Kane-Charles, District Volunteer Coordinator, lkanecharles@sandi.net (858) x1121
2 Mandatory Tuberculosis (TB) Testing for ALL MRE Volunteers and Employees The San Diego Unified School District does not provide TB testing for volunteers or employees. You will need to have a TB test administered by your family physician, San Diego Health Services Centers, or there are several health clinics or pharmacies that administer the TB test. This form or a form from your doctor must be submitted with your TB test results in order for it to be valid. MRE FFA is offering TB test clinics at Miramar Ranch on Tuesdays Sept 22, and 29 from 8-9am. Check the school website for more details. Remember that TB testing is a 2-step process. The first step is to have the test administered. The second step is to have the test read. Both steps must be completed. Following are suggested sites to have TB testing done. Please contact them for days of operation, appointment times, and cost. Rosecrans Tuberculosis Clinic (619) Rosecrans St., Ste. T San Diego, CA East Region Public Health Center (619) N.
