Class Photos: Here we have two cuff bracelets that have under gone a gilding process (i.e., a process where a thin layer of gold, or silver, or faux-gold, or faux-silver, or copper can be gilded onto the surface being gilded). The above lower piece also had opals set into sterling silver bezel settings to further example how the gilding process might potentially be utilized to compliment one s final design. Lastly, both bracelets were sealed to help to protect their gilded surfaces. Pictured above is a sterling silver pendant with a 6 mm faceted stone mounted in a sterling silver basket setting similar to one of the two (2) we will set in our InterGem faceted stone setting class.

3 Would you like to learn to craft semi-precious and precious jewelry? Intergem is bringing three skilled local jewelry artists to the Dallas Intergem Show on January 15, 16 and 17, 2016 to offer a selection of jewelry fabrication classes at Dallas Market Hall. These three instructors currently teach a variety of metalsmithing, silversmithing and/or gold-onsilver classes in the DFW area. Their Intergem classes will be free, though participating students will be responsible for purchasing an affordable kit from the instructor containing the materials and tools needed to complete each class. Most classes run between 1.5 and 2 hours each (details below). Each kit will contain a detailed tutorial that will aid students in working independently from home. Your instructors are: o o John Alexander is a skilled metalsmith, silversmith and goldsmith specializing in jewelry fabrication using both precious and semi-precious metals, as well as natural cabochons and faceted stones. Additionally, he often combines different metals to further enhance his designs (i.e., gold-on-silver ). John routinely teaches these arts at local Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX area gem and mineral clubs and shows. His most popular classes include basic Silversmithing, etching, gold-gilding, patination (the coloring of metals), soldering skills, etc. He also writes popular project tutorials and related class curriculums. Please let John know if you are interested in additional related classes in the DFW area. Jack Spinks is an accomplished metalsmith, silversmith, goldsmith, woodworker, facetor and lapidarist specializing in unusual lapidary materials (i.e., stone, gem and/or minerals). Metals and woods are viewed as a way to display the beauty of the various lapidary materials such as opals, jades, and many less common materials. Jack teaches at area gem and mineral clubs and shows and has helped to develop their curriculum. o Beth Spinks is an accomplished metalsmith working primarily in coppers and other base metals, as well as silver and gold. Beth is known for her Viking weave chains and Chainmaille and has served as an instructor in several area gem and mineral clubs and shows. Class Information: Class instruction is free with the purchase of a class kit containing all of the raw materials and/or other supplies the student will need for a particular class. Kits cost between $30 and $45. A limited number of one-on-one class instruction opportunities may be available. If interested, please check with the class instructor. They may also be able to refer you to other local qualified classes taught within the DFW area. Class enrollment at InterGem is based on first come first serve. Enroll at their Silversmith booth! If interested, you may be able to conveniently purchase additional raw materials while at the InterGem show, and/or via online outlets, so that you may continue to enhance your newly learned artisan skills from home. Jack Spinks = Instructor Fri: 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm Stone setting Class = learn to set a faceted stone into each of two (2) separate sterling silver pendants This class provides the student with the opportunity to set an individual faceted stone into a sterling silver basket setting mounted onto each of two (2) sterling silver pendants. Class Kit = $45.00 (includes materials, tools and a tutorial); however, the instruction is free of cost. You will depart this class with two completed quality fine-jewelry sterling silver pendants, each with a single faceted stone. Class limited to ten (10) students. John Alexander = Instructor Fri: 4:15 pm to 6:00 pm Hand-Polished Turquoise Class Learn to use simple hand files and other accessories from your Kit to shape a rough turquoise slap or nugget into a finished quality turquoise cabochon ready for mounting. Class Kit = $30.00 (includes materials, tools and a tutorial); however, the instruction is free of cost. Class limited to ten (10) students. Jack Spinks = Instructor 2:15 pm to 4:15 pm Gold-Gilding Metal Jewelry Class Learn the process for Gilding Gold or Silver or Other Alternative Metal Leaf onto other metals. The various gilding processes are often utilized to gild gold, silver, copper, or even faux-gold or faux silver onto both jewelry and non-jewelry substrates (such as picture frames, wrought iron, furniture, and much, much more). Different methods of sealing gilded jewelry surfaces will be discussed, and we will actually use one of the discussed methods to seal the piece you gild in class. To keep this class more affordable for the student, we will gild faux-gold onto a bracelet (using the same process for gilding actual gold or silver). Class Kit = $45.00 (kit includes brass or copper cuff bracelet, faux-gold leaf

5 and tutorial for completing similar projects); however, the instruction is free of cost. You will depart this class with a completed brass or copper base bracelet with a sealed faux-gold leaf gilded to its top surface area. Class limited to ten (10) students. John Alexander = Instructor 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm 3:15 pm to 5:00 pm Chainmaille Class Learn to make Chainmaille in order to fabricate pendants and/or bracelets. Class Kit = $30.00 (contains necessary raw materials and a tutorial); however, the instruction itself is free of cost.
