2 What is Pre-reading? Pre reading is the early stages of reading where children learn the skills and behaviours needed to start reading. Children learn to read well if they are encouraged to use a variety of skills and behaviours, rather than one method. Before your Child can read Before your child is ready to read he/she will spend time developing these skills: Visual discrimination. Understanding the purpose of books. This will include the child reading aloud, making up the words or memorizing them, and taking pleasure in sharing bools with adults or elders. Awareness of the direction of writing and direction of pages in a whole book. Being able to sequence a story or event. Predict what could happen. Being aware of the connections between print and speech. Understanding that print meaning

3 Practical Ways to Help PLAY Matching Games: pairs, snap etc. Word Games: I-spy, Can you see? Where is? Odd One Out. Follow the line, making a pattern. TALK About Events. Read Stories LISTEN To your child talking. To questions asked. To opinions given READ Share books, flap books, picture books. Use local library, bookshops. Read letters, post-cards, signs, instructions. Share comics, computer games. SING Rhymes and songs in child s home language.

4 When children are learning to read they should be given resources that give them success, enjoyment and understanding at this early stage. One such resource is pre reading rhymes. What are pre reading rhymes? Pre reading rhymes are an early reading resource which will help to launch children into independent reading and writing. By using pre reading rhymes, we can help children develop the skills they need to start reading. These rhymes offer many valuable learning outcomes. Children will: Feel comfortable because they have learnt the rhyme in class. Develop an understanding of early concepts about print: where to start, pointing and matching, one-to-one, pointing from left to right and the return sweep to the next line. Here sounds in words. Recognize punctuation e.g. commas, full stops.

5 Increase sight word vocabulary of the 45 Reception high frequency words. Experience and understand new interest words and wow words which will extend the vocabulary. Develop an appreciation for rhyme and rhythm, preparing the way for good phonological awareness. Develop early comprehension skills. Practise reading with expression and fluency. Practice speaking clearly and with expression. Write your own rhyme in home language..

6 In School: These rhymes will be read in class as a shared reading exercise. They will be used to help children locate and consolidate the sounds and words they are learning in class. Rhyme booklets will be taken home for children to practise as part of the school reading scheme. Focus Sounds Twinkle, twinkle, little star How I wonder what you are! Up above the world so high. Like a diamond in the sky. Word of the Week Wow Word

7 Reading Rhymes How can you help at home? When reading the rhymes with your child here are some suggestions of questions you can ask: 1. Can you read the rhyme with me? 2. Can you read this rhyme on your own and point tlo each word when you read? 3. Can you point and read a word that you know? (Word of the Week). 4. Can you find the first and last letter in the word? 5. Can you find the first and last letter in the poem? 6. Can you find a wow word in the rhyme? Celebrating your child s home language Children should be encouraged to chant rhymes they know in their home language and share them with the other children in the class.

8 Reading Books How can you help at home? Children will also continue to take home a reading book for you to share with them. Here are some suggestions of questions you can ask your child when sharing a book: 1. Can you show me the front of the book? 2. Can you point to the title and read the words? 3. Can you tell me what is happening on the picture? 4. Can you count the words on the page? 5. Can you find a full stop? 6. Can you find a capital letter on the page? 7. Can you tell me what is happening in the picture? 8. Can you point to each word as you read? 9. Can you tell me what word this is?

9 Remember Teaching a child to read is a partnership involves both parent and teacher, as a partnership Read to your child. This gives your child an example of good reading and enables him/her to enjoy more advanced texts Reading should be fun and enjoyable to you both Remember to Praise, Praise, Praise
