1 UNIT 19: PROMOTING HEALTHY LIFESTYLES (LEVEL 1) Learning outcomes By completing this unit candidates will develop knowledge and understanding of the factors contributing to a healthy lifestyle. They will develop an awareness of the importance of a balanced diet and regular physical activity and will identify the pressures on young people in relation to drugs. Candidates will also carry out a personal healthy lifestyle evaluation. Assessment objectives 1 Identify and describe the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy lifestyles Knowledge, understanding and skills Healthy lifestyle: eating a healthy and balanced diet regular exercise maintaining desirable body composition not smoking sensible alcohol consumption stress-free Unhealthy lifestyle: poor diet, eg excess fat, salt, sugar, protein and insufficient complex carbohydrate, vitamin/mineral and fluid intake inactive lifestyle, eg current government recommendation, adults should carry out a minimum of 30 minutes moderate activity on five or more days a week, children and young people aged 5-18 should participate in physical activity of moderate intensity for one hour a day overweight, eg increases risk of certain types of cancers, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes smoking, eg causes lung cancer, heart disease, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and is a risk factor for many cancers excess alcohol consumption, eg increases risk of mouth, throat and oesophageal (food pipe) cancer, can contribute to obesity high stress levels: work-related, ineffective time management, lifestyle habits 2 Describe how diet can contribute to a healthy lifestyle Healthy and balanced diet: five portions of fruit and vegetables each day high fibre cereals and starchy foods small amounts of protein, fat, salt and sugar lots of water Benefits: reduced occurrence of certain cancers reduced risk of high blood pressure reduced risk of heart disease reduced risk of diabetes increased energy levels improved weight management psychological benefits linked with a favourable body image OCR Level 1 Nationals in Health and Social Care 155
2 Assessment objectives 3 Describe the benefits of an active lifestyle 4 Investigate the pressures on young people relating to drugs 5 Carry out a personal healthy lifestyle evaluation on yourself Knowledge, understanding and skills Benefits: keeps the heart muscles in shape and makes the heart a more efficient pump increases blood flow and contributes to a reduction in risk factors to coronary heart disease reduces blood pressure reduces stress reduces diabetes risk increases 'good cholesterol promotes a feeling of well being promotes social interaction Pressures/reasons for taking drugs: part of the music/dance culture/social scene friends have tried them or use them enjoy the short-term effects drugs are easily available curious about the effects want to break the rules boredom cheaper than using alcohol want the same kind of experience that they get from drinking a lot of alcohol personal pain, fear, or disappointment Lifestyle questionnaires: diet activity smoking stress Evaluate the results and make future recommendations Assessment This unit is centre-assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit, candidates must produce a portfolio of evidence showing that they can meet all the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. 3 Grading Pass level Candidates carry out the tasks to show a basic understanding of the underpinning knowledge associated with the unit and carry out the practical tasks (ie a healthy lifestyle evaluation) with supervision. Candidates provide a basic description of the key characteristics of healthy and unhealthy lifestyles and show a basic awareness of how diet and activity can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. They provide a basic outline of the pressures on young people relating to drugs. Candidates carry out a simple personal healthy lifestyle evaluation and suggest basic future recommendations. Supervision is needed to complete this task. Merit level Candidates carry out the tasks to show a sound understanding of the underpinning knowledge associated with the unit and carry out the practical tasks (ie a healthy lifestyle evaluation) with some supervision. Candidates provide a detailed description of the key characteristics of healthy and unhealthy lifestyles and show significant awareness of how diet and activity can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. They provide a highly considered account of the pressures on young people relating to drugs. Candidates carry out an in-depth personal healthy lifestyle evaluation with minimal supervision and suggest detailed future recommendations. Distinction level Candidates carry out the tasks to show a comprehensive understanding of the underpinning knowledge associated with the unit and carry out the practical tasks (ie a healthy lifestyle evaluation) independently. Candidates provide a comprehensive description of the key characteristics of healthy and unhealthy lifestyles and show extensive awareness of how diet and activity can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. They provide a far-reaching account of the pressures on young people relating to drugs. Candidates carry out an independent and fully comprehensive personal healthy lifestyle evaluation and fully detail a comprehensive set of future recommendations. Guidance on assessment and evidence requirements Tutors should underpin the theoretical sessions with a range of interactive activities, eg quizzes and discussions. There are numerous websites and videos on the topic of healthy lifestyles. Tutors could set up role-play situations where candidates could debate the pressures on young people relating to drugs (Assessment Objective 4). Tutors should locate appropriate lifestyle questionnaires (eg health questionnaires, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, smoking questionnaires) for candidates to complete (Assessment Objective 5) but may need to assist them with the evaluation of their present lifestyle. Candidates may provide portfolio evidence for the assessment objectives of this unit using a range of presentation techniques. This may include written data, the use of video presentation, presentation software, assessor testimony/witness statements (if appropriate). OCR Level 1 Nationals in Health and Social Care 157
