1 Manhasset Secondary Schools English Language Arts Department English 9R Course Overview Mr. McDonough/ Ms. Becker, Ms. Mormando/ Ms. Leonard, Ms. Madigan English 9R is a rigorous course with a curriculum designed to appeal to various learning styles. An emphasis on the study of literature, the development of writing skills, and an understanding of language structure is promoted though creative activity and critical thought. Through novels, non-fiction, poetry, and other literary works including Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet and Homer s Odyssey, students interpret the relationship of form and style to content. Vocabulary acquisition and usage are viewed through the lens of literature. Collaborative work and oral presentations encourage students to employ higher-order thinking skills, as well as improve oral communication. Independent reading and homework assignments are integral and encourage students to analyze material critically. Grades The grading system for English 9R is a percentage of points earned to points assigned. All assignments and assessments are given an appropriate point value. Each quarter the point totals derive from a balance of written assignments, tests and quizzes, classwork and homework, and projects. The final grade for this course is the average of four quarter grades and the final exam, which counts for 20% of the course grade. Late Assignments, Make-Ups Students are responsible for what they miss when absent from class. They must check the Google classroom, call a classmate or set up an appointment with the teacher upon their return to school. Work not completed due to absences MUST be made up in a timely fashion, in accordance with the student handbook. Homework or projects submitted one day late will lose five points; more than one day late results in a zero. Tests and quizzes missed due to absence must be taken in either the Writing Center or the Testing Center upon returning to class. Extra Credit Extra credit is offered throughout the year; details will be provided in class. Extra Help By appointment with the teacher. NOTE: Most assignments will be required to be submitted on to ensure originality. Assignments not submitted to turnitin.com will either lose points or not receive any credit. You are now a high school student and you are on your way to becoming an independent scholar. In order to become an independent scholar, you will need to take an active role in your own education and you need to be aware of your responsibility. Here s what you can expect from the course and what is required of you: Reading Assignments, Classwork, and Homework o You will have to work to your best ability in every class period. Working in class may include writing, reading, participating, note taking, or actively listening. Complete cooperation from every student every day is expected. o You will have to work every night. Sometimes you will have homework due the next day. Sometimes you will have to work on a project not due for weeks. Sometimes you may have to read. Sometimes you may have to study for a quiz or test. It is imperative that you have a quiet place to study and work. o Homework is due in class the period you have English. You MAY NOT show me homework on your phone or print during class time. I will be very clear of what is expected and when it is expected. Most homework will be announced in advance, but some homework will only be assigned that day to be due the next day. o ANY assignment handed in the period AFTER you have English up until the FOLLOWING DAY during your English period will automatically result in a five-point deduction. Work handed in more than ONE DAY late will receive a ZERO. In the case of a LEGAL absence, the guidelines outlined in the student handbook apply. o Should you be absent, YOU are responsible to find out what you missed in class, and you must make up all work in a timely fashion.

4 Tests, Quizzes, and Projects o These are worth a major portion of your quarter grade. Missed quizzes or tests must be made up within a day of returning to school. They will be placed in either the Writing Center or the Testing Center. Classroom Supplies o You will need A three-ring binder This is where you will keep all notes and handouts. Keep it neat and organized. It must always be stocked with loose leaf. Your planner You are responsible for keeping your planner up-todate and organized. Two or more pens All work is to be completed in blue or black ink or pencil ONLY. o NO colored pens or pencils. o NO highlighter or magic marker. A Highlighter All books and worksheets necessary for the current unit Classroom Behavior and Procedures o Respect for others is top priority. o Get to class on time. Three latenesses will result in detention. o Once you re in, you re in. Do not drop off your bag and return to the hallways. Once you enter this classroom, you will commit to the day s lesson and either sit quietly and wait for the bell or begin work on the Do Now Activity. o You will not dismiss yourself. I will dismiss you. o Food or drink is NOT permitted at any time for any reason. A bottle of water is acceptable.

5 o All cell phones should be put on silent and all other electronic devices should be turned off. No device should be visible. If I see your phone for any reason during class, I will take it. Repeated offenses will result in the phone being held for the day in the main office. If I see a phone for ANY reason during a test or quiz you will automatically receive a ZERO for that assessment. NO EXCUSES! o Passes to the bathroom or nurse will be limited to three per period. o See Course Outline for an important note on Academic Integrity. Bottom Line: DO NOT copy work from other students or allow students to copy from you. DO NOT copy from other sources, such as the Internet. Use appropriate citation for research. Plagiarism in any form will result in a zero!!!
