2 What is Positive Attitude Week? Positive Attitude Week (PAWs Week) is a theme sponsored by the Baker Middle School Student Government Association (SGA) and the Baker Middle School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to encourage and celebrate positive attitudes, such as acts of kindness, among the school community. The week of February 9 through 13 is the kick-off week for the theme which will continue through the end of the year. PAWs Week is an alternative to anti-bullying campaigns and/or assemblies. 2

4 Who is Participating? Grade level Team Leaders will be given a stack of paper paw prints matching their team s color. Teachers will keep a small stack of the paw prints in their classrooms. Students will be encouraged to recognize each other s kindness and positivity or the kindness and positivity of an adult at school by asking their teacher for a paw print, writing down the person s name and also writing down the act of kindness that was witnessed or experienced. The student will then give the teacher the paw print. The teacher will give collected paw prints to Ms. Haren or Ms. Cummings, SGA sponsors. The paw prints will be given to the SGA students to be taped on the walls in a chain around the school. Staff will be encouraged to recognize each other and students by following the same process. The PTA is funding At Baker MS we have PAWSitive Attitudes wristbands for all students and staff. The process will continue through the end of the year. 4

6 What other actions are being initiated during PAWs Week based on student voice? We will pilot students having access to their cell phones during lunchtime to play games, listen to music, etc., just as they do now during the morning congregating time. The SGA came up with 3 rules for the students to follow: 1. Be respectful of others property and electronics 2. Be sure not to take pictures without permission 3. Be safe on-line We will begin to have basketball available during the second half of lunch on Fridays with an Administrator/Security monitoring the students. This is for grade 8 only as the gym is used during the lunchtime of grades 6 and 7. We will consider allowing students to listen to music during the mile run during Quarter 4 pending how responsible the students are using their cell phones at lunchtime. 6

8 How will PAWS Week be advertised to the Baker MS Community? The SGA Board will be featured on the morning announcements the week before PAWs Week to explain the event. They will be featured on the morning announcements during PAWs Week and will read aloud examples of recognitions submitted thus far. During the remainder of the year, the SGA students will be featured weekly on the morning announcements to announce more examples of paw print recognitions. Written announcements will be sent to parents via Edline morning announcements. Articles will be placed in Paw Prints. The Outdoor Message Board will announce PAWs Week. Photos of PAWs Week will be placed on Twitter and Facebook. A parent volunteer will help the SGA students after school with making banners and other decorations for the cafeteria and hallways to celebrate the theme of positive attitudes for the remainder of the year. 8

10 What s Next? 3/24/15 Positive Challenge Day: Students, staff and parents will decorate the cafeteria afterschool with positive notes and notes with inspirational messages 4/15 Date TBA: Tasty Thursday a class will be selected at random to receive a treat as a random act of kindness. TV Studio students will video the event and it will be aired on the morning announcements 10
