He modified how he carried himself into the battlefield until their relationship came under public scrutiny. The criticism and the ridicule apparently altered the dynamics of the relationship. After the war, Richard asserted male hegemony at a huge cost. Their marriage emerged from the war experience scarred, and serious disagreements remained. The Ewells died within a few days of one another, each struck down by the sudden onset of typhoid fever, before their ongoing marital strife was resolved.
