We won t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect. We provide advice and support to empower anybody experiencing a mental health problem and we campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. Mind employs about 200 staff and we have a small team of volunteers. Most staff are based in Stratford, London, there is an office in Cardiff and Manchester and there are a number of dispersed staff working across England and Wales. The purpose of this job is to provide operational management to the finance team and contribute to Mind s strategic development. You will manage the finance department. Scope of the job You will report to the Head of Finance and Facilities and provide line management to three direct reports and have overall responsibility for 5 staff within the finance unit. You will work with staff across Mind and work closely with managers, heads and directors. You will also work with other stakeholders and external contacts in delivering Mind s strategic objectives. Mind aims to ensure that the needs and interests of mental health service users, women, black and minority ethnic communities, disabled people, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender and people of all ages are reflected in all its activities. You are expected to contribute to this aim. Key responsibilities

2 1. To lead and develop the finance department to meet agreed objectives and outcomes. This will include formulating departmental work programmes, projects and plans, policies, procedures, objectives and outcomes and regularly monitoring, reviewing, evaluating, developing and reporting on performance. 2. To contribute to Mind s strategic and corporate objectives and to work across Mind, Mind Retail and Local Minds as required. 3. To lead the finance department including line management to three direct reports and two indirect reports. This includes undertaking appraisals, supervisions and team meetings and in accordance with Mind s commitment to a mentally healthy workplace. 4. To develop and manage budgets for projects/department and undertake effective financial management. This will include forecasting, setting, monitoring, reviewing and reporting on budgets. 5. To manage the corporate budgeting process, analysis and reporting. 6. To manage the tax affairs of the charity including VAT recording and returns, gift aid and other relevant taxes. Ensure that Mind is compliant with all relevant tax requirements. 7. To work closely with fundraising and other income generating units to streamline processes and maximize income. 8. To produce year-end financial accounts, relevant notes and reports and oversee the audit process. 9. To develop and implement processes to ensure lean financial processes and adherence throughout the organisation. This will include carrying out internal audits of systems and processes to ensure effectiveness and compliance. 10. To manage effective use of Mind s resources including people, finances, office space and other resources. 11. To work collaboratively with other staff, senior managers, trustees and other internal and external stakeholders and to lead by example and contribute to a culture of co-operation, flexibility and adaptability within the department and across Mind. 12. To share peer responsibility for the work of the directorate and provide operational peer support and cover as required and to deputise for the Head of Finance and Facilities as required. 13. To attend, chair and contribute to meetings, briefings, reviews, due diligence and auditing and compliance activities and to prepare and present papers to senior management, trustees, and other internal and external stakeholders as required. 14. To make a range of professional, technical, specialist and other relevant decisions ensuring that all decisions are appropriately informed and made in accordance with Mind s approach. 15. To assess and manage problems and risks to Mind in own area of work and for the department and where relevant across the organisation.

3 16. Lead the department to provide excellent services internally and externally, championing highest levels of customer care. 17. Ensure that the work of the department is appropriately informed by the views and experience of people with lived experience of mental health problems. 18. To provide subject matter expertise and provide advice and support to the department and organization as required. 19. Keep abreast of external trends and developments and changing circumstances and adapt accordingly the role, team, department and systems and procedures within Mind. To identify and propose relevant development opportunities for Mind and to provide updates and reports to senior management as required. 20. To develop and maintain contacts with other organisations and to negotiate and influence on complex and significant department and/or organisational issues. 21. To be an ambassador, spokesperson and representative of Mind as required at events and in the media. Expectations: 1. To attend and contribute to meetings, training, and other events as required. 2. To attend and contribute to the supervision and appraisal process. 3. To ensure that all responsibilities and activities within this post are in accordance with the terms and spirit of Mind s policies 4. To travel to meetings in England and Wales, which may require the need to work unsociable hours e.g. attending evening or weekend meetings or for overnight stay. 5. To adhere to relevant legal and statutory requirements including the Data Protection Act and the Health and Safety at Work Act. 6. To use Mind s resources responsibly. 7. 4 Mind Person specification: Finance manager (Grade F) Essential criteria Experience 1. A fully qualified accountant (CIMA, ACA, ACCA or CIPFA) with post qualification experience and current membership of any of the four institutions 2. Significant experience of Charity SORP and producing Year-end accounts including notes in accordance with the SORP 3. Experience of evaluating, developing and implementing corporate and departmental processes. 4. Significant experience of planning, developing, implementing, delivering, monitoring, evaluating and reviewing strategic and operational activities 5. Manager level experience of managing staff including undertaking supervisions and appraisals, engaging and developing staff 6. Significant experience of corporate and departmental financial and budget management including planning, developing, forecasting, setting, monitoring, reviewing and reporting on budgets 7. Experience of project management including planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on performance 8. Experience of managing and delivering objectives including dealing with competing priorities and other challenges 9. Experience of working collaboratively and in partnership with individuals, groups, organisations and stakeholders internally and externally 10. Experience of developing and implementing quality improvement criteria and measuring, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on impact 11. Experience of gift and charity VAT recording and returns Skills 1.
