1 Spanish 1 Overview: This is a beginning level college preparatory course designed to introduce the language and build skills in grammar, composition, speaking, pronunciation, and cultural awareness. Students will also be made aware of God s desire for us to communicate effectively with Him and with others. Text: Bible Ven Conmigo, level 1, Holt, Rinehart and Winston Ven Conmigo Grammar and Vocabulary Workbook, level 1 Voces e-textbook Supplies: Binder with a section dedicated to Spanish Regular 8 ½ by 11 inch notebook paper (with clean edges--not spiral) Dark blue or black pens, mechanical pencils or already sharpened pencils Dry erase markers (2 dark colors) Tissues (pocket packs) Also suggested: Spanish Bible, Spanish-English Dictionary or Apps for home use. Grading: Semester grades will be calculated as follows: 20% = Participation (Practicing Spanish and Cooperation) 15% = Assignments (Homework and Classwork) 15% = Quizzes 35% = Tests and Projects 15% = Semester Exam Speaking Spanish as much as possible is very important to the learning process. Students will not know very much Spanish at the beginning, but will be able to practice the conversational phrases we are learning. Their knowledge of Spanish will increase very rapidly if they practice Spanish inside and outside of class.

2 Classroom Assignments include the daily 5-minute assignment that students are to begin when the tardy bell rings, and additional oral and written activities. Homework assignments can be found on Royal Notes. Homework will include writing and memorizing new vocabulary, workbook activities, written exercises from the textbook, and Voces. Homework is due at the beginning of each class. Late class work or homework will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. Students who will miss class for sports or school activities should plan ahead. Any students who have been absent are responsible for getting their makeup assignments and taking missed quizzes and tests in a timely fashion. Quizzes usually cover the week s vocabulary and are announced. There will also be pop quizzes on concepts we have drilled in class. Tests are at the end of each chapter and are announced. Unit tests measure vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, and listening skills. Major projects also count as test grades. Semester Exams will be given twice in the school year. The first semester exam will cover all of first semester. The second semester exam will cover the entire year, with an emphasis on second semester. Expectations Students are expected to be prepared for class. This includes using the restroom and getting needed supplies from the locker before coming to class. This will help reduce distractions and make the most of class time. All students need to be attentive to the Spanish lesson. Work from another class should not be out. Integrity should be used in doing assignments and taking tests and quizzes. Students must do their OWN work. Students are expected to respect school-wide rules, and follow the teacher s specific rules and directions.

3 Rules: 1. Enter the classroom quietly before the tardy bell starts ringing. Go to your seat and take out all necessary materials immediately. 2. Listen and follow directions. 3. Stay in your seat and work diligently on Spanish only. 4. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking. 5. Treat people and property with respect. Consequences for breaking a rule: 1. First offense Warning that you broke a specific rule. 2. Second offense Time Out (This may be during class, at lunch or after school.) Loss of Participation points. Counseling and correction by teacher to help you make better choices in the future. 3. Third offense-- Notification of parents, Student will lose points. Teacher will contact your parents to let them know that a problem may be developing. This may include a discipline notice. Teacher and parents will work together to help you make better choices. 4. If the misbehavior continues, or is severe: Referral to Administration, Student will lose points. Teacher will send you to the Vice Principal or Principal.

4 Rewards: 1. Recognition for a job well-done. 2. Better Grades: Students who follow rules and directions regularly will benefit academically. By making the most of oral and written practice, their grades should be higher. They should also retain more of what they are learning. 3. Privileges: These may include additional privileges, a few minutes of creative time, fun responsibilities, or other opportunities (to be determined by the teacher.) Questions? Students and parents, If you have any questions about this class, please ask. Students may talk to me before or after class, at lunch, or after school. Parents may call, send me a note, , or schedule a conference. Grade updates will be available on a regular basis through our school grading system. If you need more information, please contact me. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. I think this will be a wonderful year! God bless you! Mrs. Mays Continued on next page
