1 Spanish for Communication - Beginning Syllabus Course Number and Name: BIL 900, Spanish for Communication - Beginning Instructor's Name: Arnie Kriegbaum Instructor Contact information: (559) , Number of Units: 3.0 Course Description This course is a skills development course in the use of oral and written Spanish language. In conjunction with BIL 901, BIL 900 designed to provide postgraduate students with a working knowledge of Spanish. These courses are organized to teach the student how to speak, understand, read and write Spanish correctly with a degree of fluency expected of 8 units of undergraduate studies in residence. Students that have previously studied some Spanish find that this course is a refresher course for their Spanish skills. True beginners will find the course both challenging and rewarding. Course Materials Each student enrolled in BIL 900 receives the following required materials for the course: Moodle passwords and enrollment key Course of study Print version of text: NEXOS, 2nd edition Nexos Student Activities Manual (SAM) Nexos DVD Nexos Audio CD Plastic Binder Course Requirements The participants in this course need to complete all activities and submit them by mail to the instructor. BIL 900 begins with a study of elementary pronunciation, conversation, phonetics and grammar and continues progressively through the study of basic word order using vocabulary that is in the context of various major themes. Broadly, there are three areas of course requirement: SAM (Student Activities Manual) written Activities Quizzes, response to the DVD, written practice (in the course of study) SAM Audio completion in response to the CD's BIL 900 covers the first seven chapters of the NEXOS text. Students will complete the written activities for each chapter (response to DVD, response to CD, written practice, quizzes). For chapters 2, 4, and 7, students will show their growing verbal skills by recording and submitting a sample of the oral Spanish. National Standards

2 The national standards addressed in BIL 900 are as follows. (Emphasis is instructor s.) ACTFL Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. ACTFL Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. ACTFL Standard 3.2: Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures. ACTFL Standard 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school setting. NBPTS Proposition 1: Teachers are committed to students and learning Dedicated to making knowledge accessible to all students. They believe all students can learn. Treat students equitably. They recognize the individual differences that distinguish their students from one another and they take account for these differences in their practice. Respect the cultural and family differences students bring to their classroom. NBPTS Proposition 4: Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. Model what it means to be an educated person they read, they question, they create and they are willing to try new things. The following website have the full list of standards: American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages National Standards: National Board For Professional Teaching Standards Learning Objectives Students will: Apply and practice the Spanish language. Demonstrate a working knowledge of speaking and understanding of the oral language of Spanish within certain vocabulary areas. Demonstrate working knowledge of reading and writing the Spanish language within the studied vocabulary areas. Evidence of Learning Instructor-observed evidence of understanding of oral Spanish when used in a context of vocabulary covered in this course as expressed in the submitted written responses to the audio recording prompts. Course instructor observed evidence of Spanish speaking ability as demonstrated in their Spanish audio recording. Course instructor observed evidence of Spanish writing ability as demonstrated in their written responses to the written prompts. Course instructor observed evidence of knowledge of the unique Spanish writing conventions, vocabulary, and verb conjugations as demonstrated in the tests. Schedule of Topics and Assignments

3 This course will comprise the following material: Lesson Vocabulary Theme Grammatical Structure Intro and 1..Greetings...Alphabet; The verbs Ser,Tener, Haber 2...Leisure activities...regular - ar verbs; Adjective agreement; The verb Gustar 3...Time; School activities...regular - er/ir verbs; Possession; Contractions; The verb Ir 4...Computers;Describing people...irregular present tense verbs; Adverbs 5...Work...Present Verbs irregular only in first person; Reflexive verbs; Progressive verbs 6...Traveling...Polite commands; Prepositions; Demonstrative adjectives 7...Sports...Preterite tense of regular and some irregular verbs; Familiar commands Final project: Write and speak on a topic of personal interest and knowledge. Assignments for each chapter by communication mode: 1. Listening - Listen to and viewing audio and video activities Write responses to audio practice 2. Reading/Writing Written response to prompts and objective questions 3. Speaking Spanish oral production - 2 minutes speaking on topics Wrap-Up Assignment The student will demonstrate written and spoken Spanish useful in a classroom setting. Grading Policy Percentage Values of Assignment Categories Written Lessons % SAM Audio Recordings...21% (3% per chapter) Chapter Quizzes...28% (4% per chapter) Final Project...9% Total = % After proper completion of the work, students can opt for either a grade of Credit or a letter grade. A grade of Credit can only be given to students whose work achieved a grade of A (90 100%) or B (80 89). Fresno Pacific University does not grant credit for coursework below a B. To receive a grade of A the following criteria must be met: Attempt and complete all assignments satisfactorily Earn 90% or higher on all work.

4 To receive a grade of B the following criteria must be met: Attempt and complete all assignments satisfactorily Earn 80-89% on all work. Rubrics are included in the Course of Study. Instructor/Student Contact All students are contacted by the instructor as follows: Initially at the time of student registration. All work is teacher scored throughout the course. The student is consistently apprised of the quality of work being submitted, and with the many activities and tests that I score directly, I am also aware of the specific needs each student has. I attempt to meet each student need with the best solution in each case. There are more than 50 activities, as well as more than two dozen oral response recordings, and 7 tests. When the student has completed this work, she/he is fully prepared for the final project. A monthly newsletter posted in the forum (Un Toque de Español) during the time of their enrollment, adding as many as 12 additional contacts that could happen for a student using the full 12 months to complete the course. Feedback on student assignments will be given through the Moodle grade book tool and on the returned work. In addition, the instructor is available via and phone to answer questions that may arise as the student progresses through the course.
