1 An Introduction to the Petroleum Industry Cape Peninsula University of Technology Cape Town August 2013 Townhouse Hotel & Conference Centre, In association with Corporation Street, Cape Town The South African Institution Of Chemical Engineers Objectives The course gives a complete overview of the petroleum industry, from crude oil in the ground, via refining, to products delivered to your local filling station. As such, it offers an opportunity for recent entrants to obtain the widest possible view of the industry in the shortest possible time. The course is intensive, and for that reason takes place in a single location well removed from the daily demands of work. Residence in the conference centre is encouraged, so that participants need not waste time travelling, and also so that they can start to forge those networks that are essential to the smooth running of the industry. To foster this, a favorable daily rate has been negotiated at the hotel. The course lecturers include Prof Jean Pierre Favennec, who is an IFP Professor based in Paris; Prof Philip Lloyd of CPUT s Energy Institute; Dr Dave Wright, General Manager, Corporate Planning, Engen; and Mike Stead, also of Engen Corporate Planning. The course will be full time over the five days, but half a day will be devoted to a tour of the Calref refinery, courtesy of the Chevron Corporation. To ensure ready interaction with the lecturers, a maximum of 20 students will be admitted to the course.

3 Course Notes All delegates will be provided with course notes on a cd or memory stick, which will include some background material. All delegates are expected to have their own laptop or other device for reading the notes. Continuing Professional Development The course has been registered with ECSA. Delegates will be provided with certificates showing 5 CPD points, should they need it. Social After registration on Sunday 25 August, there will be a finger supper at 6pm in the hotel foyer. There will be a closing dinner on Thursday 29 August. We will leave the hotel at 6.30pm. Lunch will be provided at the hotel each day, the cost of which is included in the conference fee. Transport can be provided from the airport to the hotel, subject to prior arrangement. 4 Venue and accommodation The Townhouse Hotel is in the centre of Cape Town, two blocks from the Houses of Parliament. It has a modern conference centre with a range of venue options available on two spacious levels, equipped with state of the art audio visual and presentation aids. Morning and afternoon teas and a full lunch are included in the conference fee. The hotel offers 4* accommodation. 6 Lecturers Jean Pierre Favennec is a specialist in energy, including energy economics, geopolitics and the strategic aspects. He has also worked more specifically on the downstream sector of the hydrocarbons industry, and has written a number of papers on these subjects. He is the author of several books: Refining Economics and Management ; Research and Production of Oil and Gas: Reserves, Costs, Contract ; Energy: at which price? and Energy Geopolitics. He teaches Energy Economics at a number of Universities including in the Middle East. He has also addressed many international conferences all over the world, about the situation of the energy, oil and gas industries. Philip Lloyd is a chemical engineer and nuclear physicist who has spent most of his career in industry, first in the mining industry and then in construction management. Fifteen years ago he returned to academic life, first as professor of Environmental Chemical Engineering at Wits and later as a Research Fellow at UCT s ERC. He is presently a member of staff at the Energy Institute, Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He also consults to industry. He has won many awards, and was nominated SANEA s Energy Man of the Year in Dave Wright is a chemical engineer by training, and after a spell lecturing at the University of Natal (as it then was), he joined Engen and has acted in a wide range of roles throughout the company, and is presently General Manager of Corporate Planning. Mike Stead is also a chemical engineer by training, and after working at the Engen Refinery in Durban, rising to General Manager, he was transferred to the Engen Head Office in Cape Town where he understudies Dave Wright.
