1 UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY Master of Engineering in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering with Multidisciplinary Specialization in Reservoir Characterization Or Master of Science in Geology and Geophysics with Multidisciplinary Specialization in Reservoir Characterization Program Description This course-based Master s degree, open to graduate engineers, geologists and geophysicists, is offered by the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and the Department of Geology and Geophysics. Depending on their undergraduate degree, graduates of this program will receive either a Master of Engineering in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering with a Multidisciplinary Specialization in Reservoir Characterization, or Master of Science in Geology and Geophysics with a Multidisciplinary Specialization in Reservoir Characterization. All the standard admission requirements to graduate programs in the faculties of Engineering and Science outlined by the Faculty of Graduate Studies will be met. Students with engineering degrees must meet all Schulich School of Engineering minimum requirements for admission and completion of the course-based Master of Engineering. Students with science degrees must meet all Faculty of Science minimum requirements for admission and completion of the course-based Master of Science. There may be additional course requirements for students with non-engineering or science backgrounds or engineering students from a branch of engineering other than petroleum engineering. The selection of courses by students will be finalized after consultation with and approval in writing by the students academic advisor, the graduate coordinator and the specialization coordinator. All students will complete a minimum of six half course credits from graduate level courses. The program integrates reservoir engineering, geology, geophysics, and reservoir characterization culminating in a final project. These cross trained graduates will have the
2 expertise to work on multidisciplinary teams to address the diverse challenges involved in the exploration, development and production of petroleum resources. The proposed annual intake is 24 students, ideally equally distributed among engineering, geology and geophysics. Acceptance into the Master of Engineering program would typically require the completion of the equivalent of the Bachelor of Science in Oil and Gas Engineering offered by the University of Calgary. However, it is anticipated that applicants may come from diverse educational backgrounds. They may possess industry experience, have taken continuing education courses and have the equivalent of some of the University of Calgary undergraduate oil and gas courses during their first degree. Thus, acceptance into the program and the determination of any necessary pre-requisites will be at the discretion of their academic advisor and the specialization coordinator. Similarly, acceptance in the Master of Science program requires the completion of a Bachelor of Science in Geology or Geophysics plus ENPE 507 Well Logging and Formation Evaluation or equivalent. Many Geology and Geophysics students at the University of Calgary already take this course as part of their undergraduate programs. Students with an undergraduate degree in geology must demonstrate acceptable proficiency in mathematics, which is expected to require self study as well as an applied mathematics course offered in block week before the first term. Students with undergraduate degrees in engineering and geophysics may also be required to take the block week applied mathematics course. It will be an asset for geologists to have taken additional mathematics courses as technical electives during their undergraduate degree. Similar to the engineering students, geology and geophysics students applying to this Master program may come from diverse backgrounds and may have extensive industry experience and have taken continuing education courses. Thus, acceptance into the program and the determination of any necessary pre-requisites will be at the discretion of their academic advisor and the specialization coordinator. It will be a requirement that the final capstone project course groups have at least one member from each of the three disciplines, namely engineering, geology and geophysics. Thus, a minimum of three students will be required to constitute a team to a maximum of five students. The optimum number is four. Students will be notified of acceptance after the close of applications so that roughly equal numbers of engineers, geologists and geophysicists can be accepted into the first year of the program. Students will be required to take five half course equivalents from the two fields that are not part of their undergraduate degree. Engineering students will select 2.0 full course equivalents (FCE s) in approved petroleum geology and geophysics topics, of which 0.5 FCE s must be at the 600 level. They will also take GOPH 559, Geophysical Interpretation. Geology and Geophysics students will take: ENPE 523 Introduction to Reservoir Engineering; ENPE 525 Waterflooding; and GLGY 613, Flow in Porous Media in the
3 first year. In addition, the Geology students must complete Numerical Methods (ENGG 407) and Geophysical Interpretation (GOPH 559) and the Geophysics students will select 1.0 FCE of Geology options to complete the complement of first year courses. All students will be required to take HROD 691, Project Team Building and Interpersonal Skills offered by the Haskayne School of Business during the first year. The second year is common to all students and involves three courses: ENCH 621/GLGY 621, Reservoir Simulation for Reservoir Characterization and ENCH 661/GLGY 661, Geostatistics for Reservoir Characterization and ENCH 692/GLGY 692, the Capstone Project Course. The Reservoir Simulation and Geostatistics courses will provide the crucial knowledge, and skills and technical tools to successfully undertake the multidisciplinary, team-based Capstone Project. Successful completion of the Capstone Project is the exit requirement for the program. In this final course, each team is required to analyze and integrate seismic data, petrophysical logs, core analysis, well tests, DST s, PVT data on reservoir fluids, well locations, well completion information and any production/pressure history data from a real field. Each member of the team will be expected to have proficiency on the software packages for geophysical interpretation, geological mapping, geostatistical modeling and reservoir flow modeling. The reservoir characterization will require the evaluation and assessment of a geostatistical model of the field that will be used for a successful history match and to propose future development. An economic evaluation will be included. This final project is an extensive undertaking, concluding in a formal presentation to experts, from both academia and industry. This course requires each student to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the geological, geophysical and engineering aspects of reservoir characterization and to use the principles of geostatistics to take a sound and rational position on the proposed future development of the resource under consideration. There will be a comprehensive oral examination of each student before an examining committee that includes a faculty member from each of the three disciplines. Each student will be expected to demonstrate cross discipline knowledge necessary to successful work on a multidisciplinary reservoir characterization team. Each student will be expected to express in depth knowledge in his/her area of expertise (engineering, geology, geophysics) and to have a comprehensive understanding of the significance of the other two areas in successful reservoir characterization. He/she will be able to make important contributions to the other two areas as they impact of the development of reservoir descriptions. The attached tables describe the courses offered in the program for students with background in each of Engineering, Geology or Geophysics.
