1 Engish Assessment Pan Mission Statement: A Engish majors and minors are designed to prepare students for writing and teaching careers in a variety of professiona environments, in which creativity, critica thinking, and a broad cutura perspective are required. Engish courses teach pro?ciency in iterary anaysis, professiona and creative writing, cutura anaysis and creation, and the mastery of rhetorica devices. he Engish computer-writing cassrm in 104 Boebe Ha aows students access to up-to-date computer technoogy. he basic pre-professiona objective of the non-teaching Engish majors is twofod: 1. o provide graduates with a soid preparation for graduate studies (e.g. Master s Degree in Education, Master of Fine Arts, Master s in Professiona Writing/ Communication, Literature, Library Science, Rhetoric and Composition, as we as Pre-Law). 2. o educate generaists for job pacement in the pubishing industry, in creative and editoria positions, in education, in businesses, in government, and in nonprofit agencies. he more genera, non-career oriented objective of the Engish program at UW- Pattevie is to educate citizens who understand, think about, and argue compex cutura issues. Specifcay our iterature and advanced composition courses are designed to broaden students perspectives and to increase their cutura iteracy. Students gain personay and professionay from an education in American, British, Word, and other iteratures by becoming inteectuay more astute and iterate. echnica Writing experience and other professiona skis, incuding training in eaching Engish as a Second or Other Language, are a highy marketabe skis that graduates acquire in our program. Our emphasis on the broad variety of human experiences through internships, community-based (service) earning, as we as participation in forums on and offcampus, heps students to participate in meaningfu ways in society. Graduates in Engish are taught to appy their knowedge in a persona, professiona, and socia situations in which ethica decisions demand a deepened knowedge of the human condition and an understanding of the past. Student Learning Outcomes Graduates of the Engish program sha be competent and knowedgeabe in: 1. using anguage, in particuar writing, to fit a variety of audiences and purposes; 2. integrating ogic, argumentation and interpersona communication skis (both verba and non-verba); 3. understanding a breadth of writing and ideas by femae and mae authors, both cassic and contemporary, incuding a representative body of iterature encompassing works of diverse nationa, cutura and ethnic groups; 4. distinguishing the function and variety of iterary and aesthetic forms, incuding fiction, non-fiction, drama and poetry; 5. anayzing, interpreting, evauating, and appreciating print and non-print texts, incuding fim; 6. appying historic and contemporary rhetorica theories to a media and communication contexts; 7. conducting research, using a variety of sources, and reporting?ndings in diverse and appropriate formats and media.

On-Site Observations: Facuty from the Sch of Education observes students seeking DPI certification during cinica experience in Sch of Education courses C. On-Site Observations: Facuty from the Engish program and cperating teachers observe, assess, and provide constructive criticism for students seeking DPI certification during the 18 week student teaching experience D. Content est: A students seeking DPI certification must take and pass the Praxis II Content est in Engish

Portfoio assessment students submit a portfoio of their writing in the second semester of their junior year to the Engish Program Writing committee. his portfoio is used to assess students progression to writing competency and interpretive skis. his portfoio contains a minimum of 8 papers and other writing items from freshman, sophomore, and junior year that iustrate the students abiity to anayze ideas, think ogicay, and to present coherent and effective arguments to a variety of audiences.
