Survey of application software in business and industry. Computer issues in the work place and society. Concepts Increasing computer literacy through awareness, knowledge, and interaction. Students will learn the fundamentals of computer hardware, software, and networking. In addition, they will learn about current trends related to information technology, such as growth of the Internet, E-commerce, and wireless communication. Students will also gain insight into security and ethical issues related to information exchange. Through the use of lecture, hands-on labs, and perusal of current technology news, students will become aware of the impact of technology on everyday life. Usually make-ups are allowed only under extraordinary circumstances. - Projects: It is YOUR responsibility to turn in your lab projects on, or before, the deadlines as set by the instructor. IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE LAB TA! - Late Projects: Late submission of projects will lead to loss of points, so please turn in your projects on time! No projects will be accepted after 2 weeks beyond the project s original due date. Everything regarding a project should be settled within 2 weeks of the project s due date. - Though working together is encouraged, the projects must be your own effort. Duplicate projects will all receive zero points and possible referral to the Office for Student Conduct. - All students should read, understand and abide by the University Student Conduct Code
3 Introduction to Information Technology ITP 101x (4 Units) Course Outline Week 1 Introduction to Information Technology: Principles, Practices and Opportunities - Understanding the information age; computer hardware and software; communications networks, functions and benefits of information technology. Week 2 Operating Systems - Understanding operating systems; windows; networking operating systems; Unix; multiprogramming vs. multitasking; resource allocation - Establish account, user name and password - Learn how to connect to the Internet from home/school - Learn how to FTP and the project as an attachment to the class account Week 3 Networks - Network service applications ( , voice mail, video conferencing, bulletin boards, EFT, Electronic Data Interchange, etc.); types of networks; network operating systems (protocol and communications control, network administration); topologies. Week 4 The Internet - History; internet addresses; World Wide Web (browsers, web pages, HTML, linking, URL s, etc.); HTML (text, tags, tables); compatibility issues; internet technologies (video streaming, push technology, VRML, etc..) - Defining purpose, target audience, and concise outline of information for a web site - Survey of Web sites- commercial, educational, entertainment, social and personal. What makes a compelling and effective Web site? - Design your website using a WYSIWYG html editor - Create links, import graphics, tables, lists, backgrounds - Publish the web pages at the USC UNIX web servers Week 5 Internet Research and Word Processing - Understanding the research process; evaluation of information; understanding source hierarchy (reference, primary, secondary); search concepts (boolean, proximity; truncation, wildcards); structure of online catalogs and periodical databases; using WWW search engines as a research tool.
4 - Word Processing (formatting, editing, spell checkers, thesaurus) - Desktop publishing (fonts, leading and kerning) - Locating on-line articles and abstracts of print publications - Using WSRN (Wall Street Research Network) or search engines to locate companies and websites - OLE Embedding of a Chart - OLE Embedding of a portion of a spreadsheet - OLE Embedding of an Organizational Chart - Mail Merge - Use a variety of word processing features such as a header and footer, pagination, clip art, indentation, tables, bulleted lists, word count, spell checker. Week 6 The Central Processor and Multimedia - Understanding the CPU; control unit and ALU; how the CPU executes program instructions; RAM and ROM; memory size; binary data representation; registers; speed and power; inside the system unit (processor and memory chips, ports, add-in boards, plug and play) Week 7 Spreadsheets and Business Graphics - Spreadsheet fundamentals; formulas and functions; problem solving (absolute and relative references, what-if analysis); linking of spreadsheets; business graphics; formatting; importing and exporting data; publishing spreadsheet files on the web; database management; macros. Project 1: - Analyze the feasibility and profitability of a new business - Create financial statements: projected cash flows, an income statement, and a balance sheet. - Use statistical functions. - Write formulas where appropriate - Format the table. Project 2: - Create a spreadsheet that will consider economic conditions in the consideration of two investment projects. - Use relative and absolute references. - Use functions from the following categories (lookup, financial, logical, statistical) - Link two sheets that display the project comparisons with the project costs. - Display the results using a line graph Project 3: - Import data into the spreadsheet from a Relational database - Work with lists - Create a Pivot Table - Create a Pivot Table with Pivot Chart from external data
