1 Town of Windsor- Recreation Department Winter Programs Welcome to an exciting line up of programs for recreation, leisure and active living pursuits. You will see some of your old favourites along with a number of new programs. Programs and events will be added throughout the winter so be sure to stay up to date through Facebook announcements. Everyone is Welcome! Accessible leisure services are essential to a person s quality of life. Those who require support are encouraged to participate in all programs and services offered by the Windsor Recreation Department. If you or a family member requires support to be involved in our programs do not hesitate to contact us. We will arrange to meet the family and individuals prior to the start of the program to identify appropriate program options and support necessary to assist the participant. We believe inclusion is a partnership between Windsor Recreation staff and families and that good communication is essential to a successful experience. Payment options include cash, cheque and debit. For your convenience, you may download the registration form online from the town s website ( by clicking on Town Hall, then Documents, then Recreation. Scroll down and you will find the form. Complete it and use the drop off slot at Windsor Town Office after hours to deliver forms and payment. Please register in advance as decisions to cancel a program due to insufficient registration will take place 3 4 days before the program begins. 3 Program Locations All programs take place or meet at the Windsor Community Centre except for Learn to Skate programs which will take place at the Windsor Exhibition Arena and Aquatics programs which take place at King s-edgehill Pool. See meeting places for hikes under course descriptions. Windsor Recreation has joined a National movement in sport and recreation programming called Canadian Sport for Life. Our sport based programs will focus on the Fundamental Movement Skills of throwing, catching, jumping, striking, running, kicking, agility, balance and coordination which form the basis for future sport skill development and for the lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Our program staff have completed a National Coaching Certificate Program (NCCP) in Fundamental Movement Skills and have training in developing physical literacy. Active Start: For children ages 0 6 years An early active start enhances development of brain function, coordination, social skills, gross motor skills, emotions, leadership and imagination. These programs also help children build confidence, develop posture and balance, build strong bones and muscles, promote healthy weight, reduce stress, improve sleep, learn to move skilfully and enjoy being active.
4 Indoor Soccer A recreational soccer program for 3 and 4 year olds that focuses on fun and participation while introducing the fundamental skills of the running, kicking, jumping, throwing, agility, balance and coordination. Session Dates: Mondays January 9 March 6 (no class Feb. 20) Wednesdays January 11 March 1 When: Mondays or Wednesdays (8 weeks) Time: 5:45-6:25pm on Mondays or 6:00 6:40pm on Wednesdays Cost: $40.00 Indoor Soccer - A recreational soccer program for ages 5 6. This program provides the opportunity to learn and develop fundamental skills such as running, kicking, jumping, throwing, agility, balance and coordination as well as shooting, passing, and dribbling. Session Dates: Mondays January 9 March 6 (no class Feb. 20) Wednesdays January 11 March 1 When: Mondays or Wednesdays (8 weeks) Time: 6:25-7:05pm on Mondays or 6:45 7:25pm on Wednesdays Cost: $40.00
5 Parent and Child Drop In Gym Time An opportunity for parents and caregivers with young children to enjoy unstructured play in the auditorium of the Community Centre. Basic equipment such as balls, nets, mats, and hula hoops will be provided. Caregivers MUST be present to supervise the children at all times Session Dates: January 5 March 9 When: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays from 10:00 11:30am Cost: $2.00/ family payable at the door or pay what you can afford. No registration required. When the auditorium is booked for special events, drop in gym time will be cancelled and advance notice will be given. NEW! Jump, Run, Throw (ages 3-6) - Children who are physically literate have more fun being active, get higher grades, have better social skills and are happier and more confident, Give your child the opportunity to develop physical literacy by developing fundamental movement skills such as hopping, skipping, throwing, catching and jumping in this active new program. Children will try a variety of activities that are age appropriate. Session Dates: January 11 March 1 When: Wednesdays (8 weeks) Time: 5:15 5:55pm Where: Community Centre Auditorium Cost: $40.00 NEW! Krafty Kritters (ages 3-6 years) This program is designed to allow children to be creative as they make a different craft each week. Children will improve eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity as they work with different craft materials to make fun projects that are age appropriate. 7 NEW! Movement Exploration for Tots (ages months with parents) Research shows the importance of physical activity for children in the early years. Our staff will guide children with their parents assistance through a variety of fundamental movements including jumping, catching, throwing, rolling, balancing on the spot and while moving as well as activities to improve hand-eye coordination. The program will use of variety of props such as balls, hula hoops, ribbons, scarves, and mats. Session Dates: January 10 February 28 (Tuesday) January 11 March 1 (Wednesday) January 14 - March 4 (Saturday) When: Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday Times: 10:00 10:40am on Tuesday & Wednesday 9:00 9:40am on Saturday Cost: $60.00 NEW! Tumblebugs (ages 3 6 yrs) Tumblebugs is an introductory program for basic movement and modified gymnastics that is fun, safe, inclusive and developmentally appropriate for 3-6 year olds. It includes active and exploratory learning which supports healthy growth and development and improves physical literacy. The activities will strengthen the range of foundational motor skills that children need to enhance daily living and participate in play, recreation and sport. Session Dates: January 10 February 28 (Tuesday) January 11 March 1 (Wednesday) January 14 - March 4 (Saturday) When: Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday Times: 10:45 11:30am on Tuesday & Wednesday 9:45 10:30am on Saturday Cost: $60.00
8 Learn to Skate (ages 3 and up) A progressive program for ages 3 and up that teaches basic skills from balance and forward movement to cross cuts and backwards skating. Participants must wear a properly fitting CSA approved helmet. Parents are not permitted on the ice. No skating aids are permitted. Session dates: January 11 March 1 When: Wednesday Time: 4:00 4:40pm or 4:40 5:20pm Cost: $75.00 FUNdamentals: For children 7-9 years Children in this age group need to participate in a variety of well-structured activities that develop basic skills with a focus on fun and minimal competition. Learning to Train: For children ages 8-12 years Children are ready to begin training according to more formalized methods with an emphasis on general sport skills suitable to a number of activities. ********************************************************************************************** Indoor Soccer A recreational soccer program for youth 7 and up which provides an opportunity to learn and maintain basic soccer skills such as running, kicking, jumping, throwing, agility, balance and coordination as well as shooting, passing, and dribbling. Includes small group games. Session Dates: January 9 March 6 (no class February 20) When: Mondays (8 weeks) Time: 7:05 7:45pm Cost: $40.00
9 Ball Hockey (ages 8 14) Part of this program will focus on drills and fitness followed by scrimmage and game play. Please bring gloves, a helmet with face protector and a hockey stick. If you have goalie gear, bring that too and take a turn in the net! Session Dates: January 10 February 28 When: Tuesdays (8 weeks) Time: 7:35 8:20pm Cost: $40.00 Basketball FUNdamentals (ages 8 12) This recreational program will teach the basics of basketball such as dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork and basic game play. Basic movement and fitness skills relevant to all sports will be included. Please plan to change into indoor footwear. Session Dates: January 10 February 28 When: Tuesdays (8 weeks) Time: 6:45 7:30pm Cost: $40.00
10 Youth Art Skills (For ages 5-8) This beginner program allows children to explore a diverse variety of art materials and techniques by completing a weekly project. Session Dates: January 10 February 28 When: Tuesdays (8 weeks) Time: 6:00-6:55pm Cost: $60.00 Art Skills Sampler (ages 9 and up) Participants will spend two weeks each learning basic skills and creating a piece of art with acrylic painting, drawing, clay sculpting and painting with water colours. Each section will include one class to learn skills and one class to use these skills in creating their masterpiece! Session Dates: January 10 February 28 When: Tuesdays (8 weeks) Time: 7:00 8:30pm Cost: $75.00 Adult Programs Indoor Walking Everyone is welcome (including pets!) to use the community centre for indoor walking, so don t let poor weather hold you back from getting your walk. Please plan to change into clean footwear. Session Dates: January 3 March 31 When: Monday to Friday Time: 8:30 10:00am and 11:45am 12:45pm Cost: FREE
11 Pickleball - This activity which combines badminton, tennis and ping pong is growing in popularity. The Windsor Curling Club has purchased equipment and the Community Centre is offering space to play. Wear comfortable clothing and please plan to change into indoor footwear. 12 When: Fridays with some Thursdays and Sunday when the gym is not available. Full practice schedule will be posted on Facebook. Time: 6:30 9:00pm Cost: $75.00 payable to the club Aquafitness (ages 12 and up) Pre-registration is required at least one week prior to start date. A minimum of 20 participants are needed to run the program. This program performed in chest deep and/or deep water is designed to give the participant a cardiovascular and muscular endurance workout. Using music to set the pace it trains all components of fitness in a fun and supportive environment. 13 Special Interest Programs Red Cross Babysitting Course (ages 11 and up) This course is designed for youth who want to become a babysitter or may already be one. The Babysitting Course covers the responsibilities of a babysitter, safety tips for children of all ages, basic child care skills and what to do in case of an emergency. The book and certificate course is perfect for youth staying home alone as well as those that wish to venture into babysitting. Must bring lunch and drink. Session Dates: February 11 When: Saturday Time: 9:00am 3:00pm Cost: $60.00 Facilitated by Brave Heart First Aid Red Cross Training Partner NEW! Painting with Acrylic Step up to the easel and learn the basics of working with acrylic on canvas. This new program provides 3 canvases and paints to make your works of art. Please plan to wear an old shirt or painting smock to protect your clothes. Session Dates: January 9 March 6 (No class February 20) When: Mondays (8 weeks) Where: Room 1 at the Community Centre Time: 6:30 8:30pm Cost: $110.00
14 March Break Day Camp (ages 5 and up in school) This camp is designed for kids in elementary school with opportunities for teens to get involved as junior leaders. Join us for fun filled days of games, challenges, creative projects, scavenger hunts, outdoor activities and more. Participants will be outside every day so be sure to pack your snow suit. Campers are asked to bring a lunch, two healthy snacks and a water bottle. Session Dates: March When: Monday to Friday Time: 8:00am to 5:00pm Drop off between 8:00-9:00am, programming from 9:00am -4:00pm, pick up between 4:00-5:00pm. Cost: $30.00/day or /week Nature Based Programs Take the Roof Off Winter! Outdoor Family Fun at the Dill Farm - Come enjoy short guided snow show hikes and making snow sculptures at the Dill Farm during the Long Pond Heritage Classic. Please plan to park in the parking lot on College Road and walk down to Long Pond. Snow shoes provided. When: Saturday, January 28 Time: 1:00 4:00pm Cost: FREE!
15 Full Moon Snow Shoe Stomp Enjoy the Nordic trails at Ski Martock under the full moon. There are 3-4 loops which all begin at the Nordic Hut. After each loop you have a choice to do another one or take a break with a hot drink. There are guides to lead you through the trails. This event is suitable for those who have never snowshoed and those more experienced as each loop gets progressively harder. You may want to bring a flashlight, although the full moon and ambient light from the ski hill may provide all the light we need. This popular event is well attended. Don t miss out. When: Saturday, February 25 Time: Meet at the Nordic Hut at 6:30pm to get your trail pass and snow shoes. Hike departs at 7:00pm. If you have your own snow shoes please bring them. Cost: $5.00 payable directly to Ski Martock in cash at the Nordic hut..
16 Special Events Windsor Recreation Winter Carnival February There is something for everyone at this year s winter carnival. Windsor Community Centre will be home base for all activities. Wednesday, February 15 th The carnival kicks off with a business challenge designed to get you and your team outdoors and participating in some fun activities. To show our appreciation for our local businesses we will provide all participants with a hot lunch including chilli and a roll and a dessert in the Community Centre after the competition. Draw prizes will take place and the coveted Palooza Cup will be awarded to the team with the highest score. The Town of Windsor are the defending champions! When: 12noon to 1:30pm. Where: Meet at Elmcroft Park at noon. What: Disc Golf Challenge (a par 3 course using frisbees and targets), Longest Drive Challenge (How far can you drive a tennis ball?) and a Mystery Challenge to be announced on site. Who: Teams of 3-5 made up from local businesses. Businesses can combine employees to make teams if desired. Please register your team by calling Dianne at or ing her at dlevy@town.windsor.ns.ca by February 8 th. Take the Roof off Winter!!! Friday, February 17 th Senior s Day will consist of a cribbage tournament, a 45 s card party and a soup and sandwich meal. 1:00pm - 4:00pm Cribbage Tournament - Register with a partner. Cost is $5.00 per person and includes a meal after. See you in the Gliders Room. Cash prizes and don t forget a loonie for the 50/50 draw. 4:30pm Come to Room 5 for a nice bowl of hot soup, sandwiches, a sweet or two and great conversation. Open to all those participating in the cribbage or 45 s. 6:00pm Join us for special evening of 45 s in the Gliders Room. Draw prizes, yummy snacks and don t forget your loonie for the 50/50 draw.
17 Friday, February 17 th Pre-Teen Dance for ages 7 12 years. Grab your friends and get ready to dance with some awesome DJ music, lights and prizes. Pizza slices and drinks on sale at the dance. When: 6:30 8:30pm Where: Windsor Community Centre Cost: $5.00/person Friday, February 17 th Fireworks- Join us as the fireworks light up the winter sky. When: 8:45pm Where: Elmcroft Park pool parking lot. Saturday, February 18 th Family Fun Day! This popular event will keep the kids busy for the afternoon with a giant bouncer, carnival games, face painting, healthy snacks, and prizes. When: 1:00 4:00pm Where: Windsor Community Centre Auditorium Cost: $5.00/person includes a turn on the Jurassic Adventure giant interactive inflatable bouncer, new carnival games that include Sharp Shooter, Fish in a Bowl, Duck Hunt, Weirdos, Stand a Bottle and Rope the Bull, a prize, face painting, and a healthy snack. Additional tickets for the giant bouncer and carnival games can be purchased for $1.00.

19 Get Active with Windsor and West Hants Recreation this winter with FREE access to facilities! Thanks to a grant from the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage Active Living Branch, we are pleased to announce that we are again able to provide free skates and swims. New this year is a Try It session at the Windsor Curling Club. Free Skates: Join us at the Windsor Exhibition Arena for free skates as follows: December 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29,30 December noon 1:00pm 1:00 2:00pm Saturday mornings from 9:10 10:00am on January 7, 14, 21, February 4, 11, 18, 25, and March 4, 25. Free Skates: Join us at the Newport Arena for free skates as follows: December 4, 11, 18 from 3:40 4:30 December 19 (3:00-3:50pm), December 20 (2:45 3:45), December 21 (3:30 4:20pm) Sunday afternoons from 3:40-4:30pm from December 4 to March 5 th Wednesday afternoons for seniors and parents with tots from 12:30pm 1:30pm December 21 to March 29 excluding December 28 th. Free Swims A 1.5 hour rental has been arranged at King s- Edgehill Pool as follows: January 14, 28 February 11, 25 and March 4 12:30am 2:00pm Note: Children under the age of 9 years must be accompanied in the water by an attentive caregiver 13 years or older. Participants are required to take off outdoor footwear in the lobby before proceeding to the change rooms. Maximum of 80 in the pool at a time. Free try it session of curling:: Windsor Curling Club on January 7 th 2:00 3:30pm. Youth 12 and under need a helmet. Everyone needs clean indoor shoes. Snowshoe Stomps: Join us for free guided snowshoe hikes on any of the dates listed: January 28 1:00-4:00 pm Dill Farm, January 29 th 1:00 3:00pm Irishman srroad, February 11 1:00 3:00pm Castle Frederick Farm. Snowshoes are available for loan at no cost from the West Hants Municipal Office. Windsor Recreation has some for loan free for kids 12 and under, 12 and up $5.00/day.
20 Birthday Party Packages: Consider renting the Community Centre for your next party. We have the auditorium and various rooms available for booking. Package 1: Includes rental of space, set up, clean up and an instructor to facilitate activities. Activities may include parachute games, face painting, sports activities such as soccer, ball hockey, basketball or Wii Dance. All parties are booked in two hour blocks. Cost: Auditorium - $ Room 1, 3 or 5 - $86.50 All costs include taxes! Package 2: Includes space, set up, clean up and use of equipment such as balls, nets and hula hoops. Cost: Auditorium - $60.00 Room 1, 3, or 5 - $50.00 All costs include taxes! Facility Rentals: The Community Centre auditorium and rooms are available for rent. We can host weddings, banquets, baby showers, craft sales, sports events, fundraising events, meetings, concerts, workshops and more. We are happy to accommodate ongoing rentals as well as one-time events. Prices available for commercial and non profit groups. We also rent tables and chairs for offsite events. Snow Shoe Rentals/Loan Program: Windsor Recreation has a small number of snow shoes in a variety of styles and sizes that we loan out. Cost is $5.00/day for those 13 and up and free for those 12 and under. If you pick up on Saturday, Sunday is free. Snowshoes may be picked up and returned anytime the Community Centre is open. Weekend rentals must be returned no later than 9:00am on Monday morning. Call to book in advance.
