4 Life Impact The University of Adelaide ART HISTORY Website: Contact: Greta Larsen Ph: (08) The programs in Art History have been developed jointly by the University of Adelaide and the Art Gallery of South Australia. This is the first time that a collaborative program in art history has been inaugurated jointly by the premier university and art museum of any Australian state. Students are able to study the collections of the Gallery with teaching provided by academic and curatorial staff at both institutions. Exercising the eye as well as the mind, students explore the rich collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia. In each course, the principal methodological, technical and philosophical issues form an intellectual foundation. Lectures and classes in the University, together with hands-on workshops conducted at the Art Gallery, encourage students to see those questions reflected in specific works of art - their origins and fabrication, material composition, their mixed fortunes in the history of taste, their subject matter, their place in the life s work of the artist who made them, and so on. Graduates will be familiar with the principal methodological issues associated with connoisseurship and the study of the history of art. They will have the research skills necessary to investigate essential questions in art history, including skills in the visual analysis of works of art and an understanding of the principles of aesthetics and other branches of philosophy as they relate to the study of the history of art 4 greta.larsen@adelaide.edu.au All students take at least one core course from the area of European, Australian or Asian Art, plus one elective for Graduate Certificate students, or three electives for Graduate Diploma or Masters students. Core Approaches and Issues in International Studies International Politics in the Post Cold War World Music Web: Dean: Professor Charles Bodman Rae Head of Postgraduate Programs: Associate Professor Kimi Coaldrake Ph: Fax: kimi.coaldrake@adelaide.edu.au The Elder School of Music offers course-work programs in music performance in a lively conservatorium atmosphere. The Elder Music Library, the largest in the southern hemisphere, forms a considerable resource. The School recognises: the significance of music to the cultural life of society, the importance of exploring new parameters of artistic endeavour through research and performance, the importance of developing the highest professional standards of music training and education, the inherent virtues in a performance, creative or scholastic study of music, and the importance of fostering and maintaining close links with professional arts bodies as well as the wider community through course offerings, public lectures, performances, workshops, seminars and other events. GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE The Elder School of Music offers the coursework program, Graduate Diploma in Music Performance, in a lively community of musicians. 8 MASTER OF MUSIC (PIANO PERFORMANCE AND PEDAGOGY)* Convener: Rodney Smith Ph: Fax: rodney.smith@adelaide.edu.au In 2006 the Elder School of Music expects to introduce a Master of Music coursework program specialising in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. Successful piano performers and teachers are dependent upon the ability to synthesize an increasingly broad and complex range of skills and knowledge. In particular, the program helps participants achieve high-level performance skills that are sufficient to interpret effectively major works of piano literature and advanced teaching skills that will help their pupils achieve full potential as musicians. The program aims to assist graduates to commence dual careers with confidence, firstly as piano performers in one or more specialist branches such as solo performance, chamber music or accompaniment and secondly as piano teachers able to function successfully in a wide variety of settings and circumstances. Subject to local registration or accreditation requirements, graduates may consider primary, secondary and tertiary level piano teaching in the Audition Requirements private studio, the school and college campus, as well as various teaching modes such as individual, small-group and keyboard laboratory. While the program leads ultimately to the degree of Master of Music (Piano Performance and Pedagogy), the qualification of Graduate Diploma (Piano Performance and Pedagogy) can be awarded following completion of the first year only. Recognising the balanced duality of a career as performer and teacher, the two-year program provides 12 units of performance courses and 12 units of pedagogy courses in each year. Two minor recitals, with pedagogy related themes, are undertaken in Year 1, and a major recital is undertaken in Year 2. Thirty hours of individual tuition are undertaken each year. Pedagogy courses are taught in seminars and workshops with off-campus teaching practice in selected schools and colleges. The program is structured so that candidates who already possess an honours or graduate diploma piano performance award may undertake the 24 units of pedagogy courses over one year only. Further details will be available from the School s website by mid * Subject to University approval. In addition to meeting academic admission requirements, entry to the Performance specialisation is subject to audition. All applicants for instrumental or vocal places are required to prepare three contrasting works, with a total duration of minutes. Applicants must submit with their application an audio recording (preferably in CD format) or video recording (videotape in VHS or NTSC format, VCD or DVD). The recording must be clearly labelled with the applicant s name and instrument specialisation. A letter of verification (preferably from a teacher) should also be enclosed stating that the recording is a true representation of the applicant s performance. The auditions will be assessed for musical achievement, potential, and suitability for the requirements and standards of the applied program. Applicants are also requested to supply a list of pieces studied over the past two years.
