The Scenario You are presenting a poster of your county for a map competition at the state fair. Your goal is to present a map that shows many aspects of your county. Exercise 8: Creating a map layout Up to this point, you have explored many tools used in presenting, symbolizing and labeling your data. Hopefully at this point, you are comfortable with the tools used in working specifically with data. A map however, consists of both data as well as a group of other map elements. Map elements include things such as titles, legends, north arrows, scale bars and so on. This exercise is not designed to take you step by step to create a beautiful and useful map. Rather, it is designed to provide you with the tools you will need to create your own map. Your instructor might have certain guidelines as to what you should include on the map for your class assignment, but regardless, your ultimate goal is to create a beautiful and useful map. In this exercise you will: learn more about map layouts develop a map, including data frames as well as other map elements.

An introduction to map layout Up to this point, you have explored many tools used in presenting, symbolizing and labeling your data. Hopefully at this point, you are comfortable with the tools used in working specifically with data. A map however, consists of both data as well as a group of other map elements. Map elements include things such as titles, legends, north arrows, scale bars and so on. In this exercise you will explore the tools available to you to take your data frame and combine them with other map elements to create an actual map. Traditional cartographers will argue that a proper map will have specific map elements such as a title, legend, scale bar, north arrow, neat line, descriptive text and so on. This is a discussion best left between you and your instructor, employer or client. Many different tools are available when working with map layouts. First, the layout toolbar will become visible and activated. These tools are specific navigating around the layout, not the data or the data frame. Another tool commonly used in Layout view is the Select Elements tool found on the tools toolbar. This tool is used to select, move and re-size map elements in the map layout. 3 Changing the map layout size By default, the page layout size is 8 1/2 inches wide and 11 inches high. You may wish to change the map size. 1. On the main menu, click File and select Print and Page settings. This will open the Page and Printer Setup dialog box. ArcMap options work to deal with the options available on your printers. However, you can specify settings regardless of the printers available. Each time you modify the settings in this dialog box, a preview of your settings appear in the lower right corner. 2. If you will be printing to a printer on your network, select that printer from the Printer setup name option. Common paper sizes used in the printer you selected will appear in the Paper size drop down menu. 3. Select the paper size you will use for printing your map. 4. If you wish to modify the map layout size independently of the printer settings, un-check the check box to Use Printer Paper Settings. 5. Select a standard printer paper size from the corresponding drop down menu. 6. Optionally, specify the custom map layout size using the provided width and height boxes. 7. To scale the map elements already present on the map layout to the new page size, be sure the check box to Scale Map Elements is checked. 8. Click OK to change your page settings Page 3

Adding data frames to your layout 2 Many maps consist of one main data display as well as one or many other smaller data frames. For example, a map of the United States commonly has a large map of the continental US and additional smaller maps of Hawaii and Alaska. 1. Insure that you are in the Map Layout view. 2. On the main menu, click Insert and select Data Frame. An additional data frame will appear on the map layout and a new data frame title will appear in the Table of Contents. 3. Click on the two or more data frames found on the map layout. You will notice that as you click a data frame, the frame is selected, surrounded by a dotted line and 9 control boxes and that the data frame title is in bold in the Table of Contents. When a data frame is selected, it is referred to as Activated. 4. Activate the new data frame. 5. Add data to the new data frame. By right clicking layer names in the Table of Contents, you can copy layers. By right clicking the data frame name, you can paste those layers into the new data frame. 6. Using the control boxes of the activated data frame, arrange the size and position of data frames on your map layout. A new data frame in your map layout. Use the Select Elements tool found on the Tools toolbar to move and re-size items on your map layout. Page 4

Renaming a data frame As you begin to work with multiple data frames on your map layout, your original data frame will be called Layers and each additional data frame will be called New Data Frame, New Data Frame (2) and so on. Managing your data frames will simplify your workflow and keep things more clear. 1. Right click the data frame name, and select properties. This will open the Data Frame Properties dialog box. 2. Click the General tab. 3. Modify the name in the Name field. 4. Click OK to close the Data Frame Properties dialog box and apply your settings Page 5

Rotating your data frame content Although traditionally maps have North to the top of the map, you may wish to rotate the contents of your data frame to better present the data or have the features better fill the data frame. Be advised: If your data frame contains raster data and the data frame has a projection that is different than the raster layer, the raster data will not display in the rotated data frame. 1. On the main menu, click View and select tool bars / Data Frame Tools. This will add the Data Frame Tools toolbar. 2. Activate the data frame you wish to rotate. 3. Click the Rotate Data Frame button. 4. Click and drag the data frame contents to rotate the data within your data frame. If you wish to clear the rotation, Click the Clear Rotation button on the Data frame tools toolbar. 1 3 Page 6

Creating an extent rectangle 2 You may wish to create a box on one data frame that signifies the extent of another data frame. 1. Open the Data Frame Properties Dialog box for the data frame you wish to have the extent rectangles by right clicking the data frame name in the Table of Contents and selecting Properties. 2. Click the Extent Rectangles tab. 3. In the Other Data Frames window, select the data frame you wish to illustrate with an extent rectangle. 4. Click the Add button. By default, the extent rectangle is a thick red line. 5. To modify the extent rectangle, click the Frame button. This will open the Frame Properties dialog box. 6. Make adjustments to the data frame as you desire. 7. Click OK to close the Frame Properties dialog box. A Leader is a line that connects the extent rectangle to the data frame it is illustrating. 8. To add a leader, check the Show Leader check box. 9. Modify the symbology by clicking the Leader Symbol button Click Apply to preview your settings or click OK to apply the settings and close the Data Frame Properties dialog box A rectangle appears that marks the extent of the other data frame. 9 8 Page 7

Creating a legend 1. Activate the data frame that will correspond with the legend. 2. On the main menu, click Insert and select legend. This will open the Legend Wizard dialog box. By default, only the layers turned on will appear in the legend Items window. 3. Modify the list of layers to appear in the legend by selecting and using the add or remove buttons. If you click Preview, a preview of the legend will appear on the map. To advance to the next step of the Legend wizard, you must turn the preview off by clicking the Preview button once again. 4. Click the Next button to advance to the next step in the Legend wizard. 5. Modify the legend title and title font and justification as desired. 6. Click the Next button to advance to the next step in the Legend wizard Page 8

7. Modify the legend frame, background, and drop shadow as desired. 8. Click the Next button to advance to the next step in the Legend wizard. 9. Select a layer name in the Legend Items window. 10. Modify the symbol size and appearance using the corresponding options in the patch box. 11. Click the Next button to advance to the next step in the Legend wizard. Exercise 8: Creating a map layout Page 9

12. Modify the space settings for your legend by changing the values in each of the Spacing boxes. You will note that each time you click into a spacing box, the location is labeled in red on the Legend preview to the right. 13. Click the Finish button to create the legend and close the legend wizard. 12 How do I fix all the funky names in the Legend? The legend directly reflects the names, labels, and other text found in the Table of Contents. To change a layer name, field name or category name in the Table of Contents, first, click the text to select it. Then, click again to edit the text. As you make changes to the Table of Contents, the changes will be reflected in the legend. 13 Other changes can be made to the legend by right clicking the legend with the Select Elements tool and selecting Properties. Page 10

Adding a map title 1. Click Insert on the main menu and select Title. By default, the Map title is the same as the name of the ArcMap document. 2. Double click the new title to modify the text. 3. Modify the title in the Text box. 4. Click the Change Symbol button This will open the Symbol Selector dialog box. 5. Modify the font type, size and style as desired. 6. Click OK to close the Symbol Selector dialog box. 7. Click Apply to preview your adjustments or click OK to apply your changes and close the Title Properties dialog box Page 11

Inserting other map text 1. Click Insert on the main menu and select Text. By default, a text box is added to the middle of layout view that contains the word Text, in 8 pt. Arial font. 2. Begin typing to modify the text in the text box. 3. Alternatively, you can double click the text box to open the Text Properties dialog box. 4. Modify the text in the Text box. 5. Click the Change Symbol button This will open the Symbol Selector dialog box. 6. Modify the font type, size and style as desired. 7. Click OK to close the Symbol Selector dialog box. 8. Click Apply to preview your adjustments or click OK to apply your changes and close the Text Properties dialog box. 4 5 Helpful Hints Unlike what you might find in other applications, text boxes in ArcMap do not automatically create a new line when you reach the end of your text box. Instead, the line of text continues way off to the right of the map layout. In order to include the character returns, you will need to include these in the Text box on the text properties dialog box (step 4 in this task.) 8 Page 12

Adding a north arrow 1. Activate the data frame for which you want to create a north arrow. 2. On the Main menu, click Insert and select North Arrow. This will open the North Arrow Selector dialog box. 3. Select the North Arrow style you wish to add. 4. Click OK to add the North Arrow to your map layout. 3 4 Page 13

Adding a scale bar 1. Activate the data frame for which you want to create a scale bar. 2. On the Main menu, click Insert and select Scale bar. This will open the Scale Bar Selector dialog box. 3. Select the scale bar style you wish to add. 4. Click the properties button. This will open the Scale Bar dialog box. 5. Click the Scale and Units tab. 6. Adjust the number of divisions and subdivisions used on the scale bar. Be default, the scale bar will use the measurements used in the data frame. 7. Adjust the measurement units to use on the scale bar. The numbers and marks tab adjusts how the scale bar is drawn. In this task, you will not modify the settings. 8. Click the Format tab. 9. Adjust the text size and style you wish to use for your scale bar. 10. Click OK to close the Scale bar dialog box. 11. Click OK to add the Scale bar to your map layout Want More? Go ahead, mess with the settings on the Numbers and Marks tab to see what happens. try inserting Scale text. Explore the options available. 10 Page 14

Adding a neatline A neatline is a neat line that neatly surrounds all of the map elements on your layout and provides a neat looking frame around your map. Try it, it s neat! 1. Click Insert on the main menu and select Neatline. This will open the neatline dialog box. 2. Using the radio button provided in the Placement box, specify the extent of your neatline. 3. Specify the gap between the neatline and the map elements. 4. Specify the roundness of your neatline corners. 5. Modify the neatline border, background and drop shadow as you desire. 6. Click OK to add the neatline and close the Neatline dialog box Helpful Hint The neatline is also a map element and can be moved and re-sized using the select element tool. Because of this, you may wish to add the neatline once you are completely satisfied with everything else in your map layout. Otherwise, when you try to move any other map elements, you might end up moving the neatline. Page 15
