4 Color Facts: Screen printing on a disc is different from printing on paper and the results will vary from your paper proof. There will be a visual deviation between printing on paper and printing on a disc. A disc has several different types of surfaces and the printing results vary on each: Clear Plastic (no silver or white flood): Ink becomes transparent and tends to have a flat/dull finish. Color inks including PMS colors, lose their intensity and vibrancy. Metalized Area (silver): When printing halftones, the reflection of the metal produces a shiny, metallic look. When printing with a solid ink, a color change will occur. Metalized Mirror Band: Some color change will occur. Printing a white flood will eliminate some of the differences of printing on the different disc surface areas. A white flood gives the ink a more opaque look and keeps the colors closer to what is specified. Printing a halftone without a white flood will alter the ink color. Colors may also not reproduce accurately when they are overprinted on top of each other. Gradual fades or vignettes should be avoided especially when it is a wide range. Gradual fading of halftones is not recommended because dot gain and tonal jump will occur. Dot gain is when ink dots print larger then they should and begin to blend together causing darker tones and stronger colors. Tonal jump is the appearance of very pronounced rows of dots when trying to fade from light to heavy. Font Size (size of text): Minimum of 4 pt. bold font size for text should be used. Reverse Font Size: Size of text knocked out to silver of disc or background color, should be a minimum of 6 pt. bold. Fonts smaller than this have a tendency to close as the ink spreads during silk screen printing. Reverse Font on Halftone Size: Size of text knocked out on halftone in background should be a minimum of 7 pt. bold. Line Width: Minimum line width of 0.5 pt. this includes lines in fonts, logos and placed images. Reverse Line Width: Width of line knocked out to silver of disc or background color, should be a minimum of 0.75 pt. Film Density: Film Density is the degree of darkness (opacity) of photographic images. If emulsion is not dense enough, light will pass through it when trying to expose image on silk screens recommended density is no less than 3.5. Film Quality: Check for scratches, pinholes, cuts on films. Trapping: Trapping is a spread of the image that prints at the start of the film sequence usually in the lighter color. The lighter color spread goes under the images that print last or in the darker color. Overlapping of lighter Page 4 of 7

5 colors by the darker colors is done to prevent silver/white from showing around the edges (i.e. letters) as the machine adjusts during printing. Trapping should be a minimum of.5 pt. Tonal Ranges: Tonal ranges are the measurement of the screen value in any one given place. Less than 15% concentration of dots will cause image loss during printing. Because of the potential of dot gain during silk screen printing, values greater than 85% concentration of dots will cause parts of the image to close in and appear splotchy. This can occur in halftones, solid backgrounds and especially in graduated fades. Values outside this ranges are at the customers own risk. Halftones/Lines per Inch (LPI): The amount of black spaces that are placed between the rows of dots used to create a halftone (photo image) or screened area. Dot size is relative and automatically controlled by the computer that outputs the films. L&M is able to print an LPI of 133 (minimum of 100) for silk screen and 175 for offset. Title/Item Number: Customer supplied films must be clearly marked with your item number so we can easy identify the films. Choke/Spread: Trapping terminology or the overlap overprinting images to avoid color or silver fringes/borders around image detail or words. Tonal Jump: Dot tones having an extreme variation resulting in a defined line instead of a smooth gradual fade or blend in a vignette or shade. Avoid large color ranges vignettes in screen printing. Emulsion: Coating of film, emulsion side must be up on positive films (silk screening) and down on negative films (offset). Registration Marks: Crosses or other targets used for positioning film in register, or to register two or more colors in process printing. All films must have registration marks in the following positions 0, 90, 180 and 270. If improper or no registration marks are provided, films will not be used and new ones must be provided. Spot Colors: Spot colors/pms colors are the same in silk screening and offset. Spot colors should be referenced using COATED stock colors. Number of colors: For silk screening the maximum number of colors that can be printed is 5 generally 4 color process and white flood. For offset we can print 6 colors, 4 color process a white flood and 1 spot color. In some cases we can do 7 colors, where white flood is printed first, this will result in extra charges which will be provided by your CSR. NOTE: White flood and spot colors in offset are printed silk screen and require positive films. Moiré: Is a pattern resulting from the use of inappropriate film and screen angles. Rows of dots on the film conflict with those on another piece. The effect is a distinctive box-like shape with hazy edges. Moiré can Page 5 of 7

6 walk or grow as the film is rotated on a center axis. Patterns can also be caused by screen angle against the dot row angle on a single piece of film. L&M currently uses the following angles and you should have customer supplied films made at the same angles. Yellow: 52.5 Degrees Cyan: 37.5 Degrees Magenta: 7.5 Degrees Black: 52.5 Degrees NOTE: ANY DEVIATION FROM THESE SPECIFICATIONS OR RECOMMENDATIONS IS AT THE CUSTOMERS RESPONSIBILTY AND THE CUSTOMER WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR FINAL OUT COME. Artwork submission guidelines Films: Customer supplied films must follow the guidelines outlined above. We will only accept films for silk screen jobs all offset films must be done at L&M. Electronic files: L&M is able accept files for both MAC and PC platforms. Files should be submitted in one of the following formats: Preferred file formats: High resolution PDF with outlined fonts and layers. Artwork should be square 127mm x 127mm in size. EPS files with outlined fonts and layers. Artwork should be square 127mm x 127mm in size. AI files with outlined fonts and layers. PSD files with outlined fonts and layers. If outlined fonts are not being provided then ALL fonts in the job must be submitted BESURE TO INCLUDE THE FONT NOT JUST A REFERENCE OR SCREEN FONT. JPEG files that are 127mm x 127mm square and good resolution. Avoided file formats: TIF files should be avoided especially if spot colors are required. QUARK or INDESIGN files should be avoided as well. These files tend to be the most problematic files to process through our systems. They need to be sent with all linked files and every font used. Often there is something missing when these files are sent. Page 6 of 7

7 Freehand files. Corel draw, MS Word or MS Paint and the like, files will not be accepted. File Submission Protocols: Files can be submitted in the following manners: To our online customer information system file upload. On CDR/DVD sent by the customer to your CSR. Downloaded from the your/designers FTP server. using ZIP or SIT files. Proofing of Electronic Art: L&M will you a PDF proof of you electronic artwork. These proofs are to insure we have not missed any content or design elements. NOTE: ANY DEVIATION FROM THESE GUIDELINES CAN RESULT IN DELAYS OF YOUR JOB. DEVIATION WILL ALSO RESULT IN ADDITIONAL ART CHARGES. Page 7 of 7
