Top 10 Reasons to be a Relief Teacher in NZ 1. Relief teaching is a fantastic way to network for future job opportunities. Many teachers have won long term roles by becoming a school or centre's favourite reliever. 2. It s flexible. You ll get to decide what days and hours you want to work. If you want a day to yourself, you can 3. Every day is different. You ll never get bored because you ll be working with different students, teachers, age groups and communities every day. That being said, you ll also get the opportunity to build relationships with the schools or centres where you work regularly. 4. Relief teaching is an invaluable way to get to know yourself as a teacher. Going to numerous schools and centres allows you to figure out what kind of place you'd like to teach in. 5. It also shows you where your strengths are as a teacher. You might find you get along really well with year 7/8 students, or have a knack for working with infants. 6. There is minimal lesson planning involved. A lot of the time the planning at the school be done for you. All you need to have a few lessons up your sleeve for each year level you teacher. You don t have to do any marking or reports either. 7. There are also no meetings you have to attend or out of school responsibilities you have to take part in. 8. This means you get your evenings and weekends to yourself You ll be building experience while still having time for a social life. 9. It s a great way to earn money while starting a business or pursuing another passion. 10.You ll get to see some amazing teachers in action and you ll learn a huge amount from them.

Writing a CV for Relief Teaching Applying to go on a school or centre's relieving list is a much more casual process than applying for a long term role. You certainly don't need to write a cover letter to go on a relieving list and many schools and centres prefer a shortened version of your CV. To put together a relief CV, all you need to do is cut your CV to the bare essentials. You can still use the same formatting. Here s what you should include. 1. Your name You're probably laughing right now, but some people do forget 2. A photo The idea behind having a photo on your CV is to make a fantastic impression when handing in your CV to the relief organiser. Later on when they're looking through a pile of CVs to find a reliever for the day they'll be able to match the photo on your CV to you and remember what a great impression you made

3. Your contact details This is probably the most important part It sounds obvious, but if you don't put down your contact details, the school or centre won't be able to get in touch to offer you relief work. Put down any phone numbers you use, and indicate which number you'd prefer to be contacted on first. Putting down your address is also useful, as it lets the school or centre know how close you are and how long it will take you to travel there. An address is also useful for any payroll-related things. 4. Teacher registration information This shows that you are a legitimate teacher. Include your registration number and expiry date so they can reference it quickly on the Teacher's Council website if necessary. It's also a good idea to keep your registration card on you when visiting schools or centres. 5. Qualifications Again, listing your qualifications shows that you are legitimate. Include the dates you gained these qualifications and the institution you got them from. 6. A short personal statement Keep this to a few lines and include what subjects you can teach. 7. Brief summary of experience Include a brief summary of your experience on practicum. Keep this to a few lines. List the names of schools and centres, and year levels taught. 8. References List two references that the relief organiser can call up. It is unlikely they'll complete a full reference, but it's good to have referees there for the relief organiser's piece of mind. Make sure at least one of these referees has seen you teach in case the RO wants to ask questions about your behaviour management.

NAME CURRICULUM VITAE Write details of your availability here, and list the years that you are happy to teach. TEACHER REGISTRATION Number: Type: Expiry date: TELEPHONE Home: Cellphone: CONTACT DETAILS ADDRESS Photo QUALIFICATIONS [List most recent first] Title of Qualification Name of Institution, City, Country TEACHING EXPERIENCE Date From - To [Include teaching placements and schools you have relieved at.] Date From - To [In date order from most recent first] School Name or other employer (including teaching placements) Year level taught TEACHING REFEREES [1 or 2 senior teaching referees who have preferably supervised your teaching experience i.e. associate teacher, visiting lecturer, HOD, DP, Principal, centre manager, Senior Teacher, Syndicate leader.] Name Position School address Tel/cell Name Position School address Tel/cell 6

Getting Your Relief Paperwork Sorted On your first day of relief teaching at a particular school or centre, being organised and prepared is one of the best ways to called back for more relief days in the future. If you can walk into a school or centre and have everything ready for the office administrators in order to get paid, you will be a popular reliever. (As long as you do everything else right) (Please keep in mind that while we are experienced in dealing with pay systems we are not the experts. Those would be the office administrators at the schools or centres you are relieving for) An important note before you start: To teach in a primary or secondary school in New Zealand for more than 20 half days you must have New Zealand teacher registration. You will need to have teacher registration (or have been an extension letter from the NZ Teacher s Council) to relieve at primary or secondary schools. In the early childhood sector, you can work without having teacher registration but you will get paid at a lower rate than you would if you were a registered early childhood or registered primary trained teacher. It is in your best interests to get registered as soon as possible after completing your course. Further Information If you need further information, the Novopay website is your first stop. If you can t find what you re looking for there or if you re having any issues, you need to find out who the designated Novopay person is at the school you re relieving at, as this is the only person who can speak to Novopay on your behalf (usually this is the office administrator). If you are relieving for an agency - ask your agency what the process is if there any issues with your pay, as they may have their own processes for sorting this.

Teaching in Primary and Secondary Schools NOVO1T - New Appointment Form The NOVO1T form can be downloaded on the Novopay website ( There is an accompanying guide which will help you with any questions you might have filling it out. The purpose of the NOVO1T form is to register you on the Novopay payroll system and generate your Ministry of Education payroll number. You will need to complete this on the first day of each category of teaching work that you do, i.e. on your first day at a primary, secondary or area school, and on the first day of a relief, fixed term or permanent role. For example, if you are a primary teacher who has had your first day of relief at a primary school, you d complete the NOVO1T form. You would not need to do this again for any primary relief work you do. However, you will also need to complete the NOVO1T form again if you did a day s relief at a secondary school. And if you started work in a fixed-term role, even if it s in primary, you ll still need to complete the NOVO1T form again. When completing the NOVO1T form, you will also need to complete a tax-code declaration (to be held on file at the school). You can download the IR 330 form on on the IRD website, or get it from the school or centre. You will also need a bank deposit slip or a printout of an electronic slip to match against what you ve written on the form. If you have filled out the NOVO1T form for a prior role, and already have a Ministry of Education number, you need to put this on your form so they don t create a duplicate number for you. Your NOVO1T application will be sent from the school to Novopay. Don t try and send it yourself as it won t be accepted If you haven t been teaching for three months or more you may need to complete the NOVO1T form again.

NOVO7T - Salary Assessment Form The NOVO7T form and accompanying guide are available to download on the Novopay website. The purpose of the NOVO7T form - also known as a salary assessment form - is to measure where you fall on the pay scale for primary and secondary teachers. This is based on your qualifications and the amount of teaching experience you have. Until this form is processed you will be paid as an untrained teacher (however you will get back paid once the form has come through). Like the NOVO1T, you will need to fill this form out again on the your first day of day to day relief, fixed or permanent role. If you are starting a fixed term or permanent role, you need to get the principal at your school to sign the form. If you are doing day to day relief, it doesn t need to be signed by a principal. Unlike the NOVO1T form you need to send the NOVO7T form to Novopay yourself. If you have overseas experience, you will need statements of service from each place that you have taught at. These need to be as specific as possible and signed by the principal at the school. Ensure you provide these documents in the exact format as specified by Novopay. Relieving at Early Childhood Centres and Independent Schools Unlike state primary and secondary schools, early childhood centres and independent (private) schools don t use the Novopay payroll system. When you re called up to relieve at a early childhood centre or independent school for the first time, it s worth asking what you ll need to bring to get paid, as most schools have their own system. However, almost every centre or school will need your bank account and tax details, so it s worth having several completed IR 330 forms and copies of a bank statement in your relief backpack. You may also wish to bring a Ministry of Education timesheet with you to record your hours on (available on the Novopay website). If you are relieving for an early childhood centre through a relief agency, the agency may pay your wages rather than the centre. It is best to check with the agency around the processes for this.

Classroom Management Tips for Relievers Be positive about the day, if you believe that this class is going to be a nightmare, it will show The students will pick up on a relaxed, calm demeanour and positive attitude. Look like you re enjoying them, having fun, on top of things and show trust in the students. Always have a few spare pens, pencils and pencil sharpeners at the ready. You don t want a lack of pencils to be a disruption, which it can be. Ensure you have several fun, educational lessons and activities planned for those days where there is no planning, or the planning provided is difficult to follow. Acknowledge to the students that the day might be a little different to normal since they have a different teacher. Explain your expectations for classroom work and behaviour, and the positive and negative consequences.

Move around the room calmly, ensuring everyone is on task. Have activities ready for Fast Finishers. However make sure they look enjoyable, otherwise fast finishers could feel like they ve worked hard already, done what is expected of them and then they re given more work to do. Avoid confrontational situations. Ask a student to do something, then go and leave them to do it. Don t watch over the student waiting for them to do what you ve asked, this can tempt them into confronting you. After a few minutes, if they have not done what you ve asked, ask one more time and keep calm, without making a deal out of it. Again, if no response, follow through with the negative consequence system you outlined at the beginning of the day. Use the regular classroom teacher s name, as it reminds them that you know about the class and what s been happening previously. Keep on top of noise levels. Keep stopping and reminding the class of the noise level if it is not what you want. Try to deal with any challenging situations yourself first, however if you feel it getting out of hand or constantly disruptive to others, then certain situations require intervention by others. (Make sure you know who to go to before the school day starts.) Positive reinforcement is powerful in all classes and for all ages. Use this sensibly; when you see students demonstrating actions you want to encourage. It is up to you whether you want to reward with prizes and treats. Keep the activities you bring with you simple. Better to be easier than too hard. Stick to your time frames, for students who haven t finished and have been working hard ask them to hand it in also. They will get a chance to finish it at another time. It s easier as a relief teacher to have everyone starting a new task at the same time.
