2 What is GEMS/Water Background A global water quality monitoring system and network providing evidence-based information on global inland water quality, status and trends from 1978 to date to 31 st March 2014, supported by Environment Canada From the beginning, Implemented as a collaborative effort of UN agencies (UNEP, WHO, UNESCO, WMO, the IAEA) In Mar Restructured to be more effective in monitoring and sharing global data for all stakeholder
3 The new GEMS/Water Mission: to monitor and provide reliable water quality data analysis and synthesis to inform sustainable development goals, targets and management It seeks to: Identify demand and possible partnership arrangements Identify & address regional challenges in water quality data monitoring, storage and use through capacity building, QA/QC & sharing Thoroughly addressing the issues of continued data flow, spatial temporal coverage, gaps, the options of sharing on e-platforms like UNEP Live
4 GEMS/Water Present and Future Transitioning to a new business/governance model Key components: GEMStat the data analysis and knowledge platform (at FIH, supported by BMUB, German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety), GEMS Capacity Development Center UCC- Cork - Ireland, Global capacity building and training component (supported by the Government of Ireland) Regional Hubs - fostering coordination, capacity building and regional implementation of GEMS (e.g ANA, Government of Brazil for LAC) The GPCU global coordination, under the guidance of the Steering Committee

6 GEMS/water activities and services 1) Global Water Quality Database and Information Enhance accessibility to credible data multiple scales time series Promote interoperability with environmental information/knowledge management/earth observation systems, e.g., UNEP Live / GEOSS 2) Data Quality Further develop QA/QC tools and resources for developing countries (e.g. manuals, training courses) Deliver services enhancing data quality/reliability (e.g. performance evaluation, inter-calibration studies, on-site lab assessments) 3) Water Quality Assessments Contribute to UN water publications (e.g. WWDR, GEO) Contribute to policy development for issues related to water quality (e.g. climate change and human health, risk, vulnerability) SDG and Post 2015 process 4) Capacity Building and International Network Increase participation of developing countries in water quality monitoring, assessment, research and reporting Develop training courses and promote partnerships to deliver via regional centres of excellence, UNEP Live i.e. build constituency for continued data flows
7 Establishing regular WQ assessment and reporting process in the GCC countries and Arab region? Clear regional wq data monitoring priorities. Data analysis and interpretation Identify and address challenges, gaps Regular regional assessments and contribution to global assessments e.g. 4th World Water Development Report, Vol 1, WWQA report Adopt UNEP Live data sharing platform Through reports, provide information for policy making, management, research to and the general public
8 Strengthen partnerships and networking Establish a GEMS/Water Regional Hub: Its Roles and responsibilities Foster collaboration with partners to contribute to the implementation of GEMS/Water on regional scale; Work closely with the GEMS/Water components - Centre for Capacity Development, GEMStat and the GPCU. Participate in regular WQ monitoring/assessments along harmonized QA data standards; encourage access to country/regional level WQ data and work with the UNEP Live Platform and GEMStat; participate in the development/application of GEMS capacity building tools; engaging in regional/national training in water quality monitoring and analyses; Having a critical mass of highly trained experts in water quality compared to other countries in the region/sub-region; Work closely with UNEP Regional Offices to foster regular water quality/quantity status (trend) reporting across various systems i.e. and assist the GPCU.
9 The future of the UNEP GEMS/Water Programme To increase the regional and national presence of GEMS/Water Encourage open access policy and continued data flows (UNEP Live) To enhance synergies between members of the GEMS/Water and other initiatives within the realm of water quality (e.g. WWQA, IWQGES, TWAP) To enhance synergies between GEMS/Water and UN Water Group, To develop the GEMS/Water role in water quality monitoring and assessments in the Post 2015 SDGs process (assistance on country level)
