3 About the Commission The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (the Commission) commenced as a corporate Commonwealth entity on 1 July The Australian, state and territory governments initially established the Commission in 2006 to lead and coordinate national improvements in healthcare safety and quality. The Commission s permanent status was confirmed with the assent of the National Health and Hospitals Network Act The Commission was subsequently included within the National Health Reform Act Our mission The Commission s mission is to lead and coordinate national improvements in the safety and quality of health care. Our role and functions The Commission s role is to provide health ministers with strategic advice on best practices to improve the safety and quality of health care. The Commission develops and supports national safety and clinical standards; formulates and implements national accreditation schemes; and develops national health-related data sets. The Commission is also working to reduce unwarranted variations in practice and outcomes for individuals and populations, and coordinating national action to address healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance. Our accountability As a corporate Commonwealth entity of the Australian Government, the Commission is accountable to the Parliament and the Minister for Health, the Honourable Sussan Ley MP, for achieving the outcomes of the Commission s agreed work plan and priorities. 4 Position description Position Number: Position Title: Position Level: Employment Type: Reporting To: Location: Senior Project Officer EL1 Full time, ongoing Margaret Banks, National Standards Program Director Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care 255 Elizabeth Street, Sydney Overview of the position This position is located in the National Standards Program. The Program s purpose is to develop and maintain the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards and resources, and support implementation of the Standards and the Australian Health Services Safety and Quality Accreditation (AHSSQA) Scheme. The Senior Project Officer will be responsible for managing the day to day work of program projects including: research and analysis of matters related to Standards and accreditation project management duties stakeholder management and facilitation of meetings preparation of briefs, report, meeting papers and project documents. Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Senior Project Officer will be expected to work with limited supervision, within a team context and with internal and external stakeholders. The position requires excellent skills in communication, problem solving, time management and research and would suit a high performing candidate. Position duties and responsibilities 1. Undertake project management activities related to the NSQHS Standards and AHSSQA Scheme including: project planning and documentation implementation and monitoring of project milestones presenting and / or report on progress identification and management of risks. 2. Review and analyse research, data, reports, websites and other published material relevant to the program area. 3. Consult with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the development of specific projects relevant to the program area. 4. Prepare written reports, briefs, agendas, papers, presentations and other documents for a range of audiences. 5. Establish and facilitate the project s working groups/ committees/ forums/ workshops/consultative process and represent the Commission at relevant meetings and provide secretariat support to the work of relevant committees and expert groups. 6. Inform the Program Director, Program team and Commission Executive and other relevant stakeholders about the progress and strategic implications of projects. Page 4 of 5

Participate on the roster of the Commission Advice Centre available to health services seeking practical and technical advice when implementing the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards. 8. Undertake other duties as required/directed. Skills and knowledge required Well-developed project management skills including resource and time management. High level writing, research, analytical and interpretation skills. Effective oral communication and presentation skills. Well-developed negotiation, influencing and consultation skills. Sound decision making skills, incorporating initiative and professional judgement. Knowledge and understanding of the issues regarding safety and quality in health care and the Australian healthcare system in general. Knowledge of healthcare stakeholders and relevant interest groups. Qualifications and experience Qualification as a health professional with clinical experience. Tertiary qualifications in a relevant area of health. Project management and/or policy development experience at a state or national level. Experience facilitating the work of committees and engaging stakeholders. Experience in health care safety and quality, research and analysis of information. Experience writing for different audiences and in different formats. Selection criteria 1. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Australian healthcare system. 2. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues regarding safety and quality in health care. 3. Demonstrated high level project management skills and experience. 4. Demonstrated research and analytical skills. 5. Well-developed oral and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to prepare briefing documents and submissions. 6. Strong interpersonal skills including ability to cultivate productive working relationships with a range of stakeholders. 7.
