DO ALL THESE FIT IN TO KATE THIEMER S DEFINITION? Does it really apply in the strictest sense to all the projects I just talked about? Most of them, clearly yes they do, but with a few others not all items clearly had interaction, well at least not in the sense that every item, or photograph had a comment or additional information added that was of value.
PARTICIPATORY ARCHIVES Theimer s definition is still the best one I ve found so far because it encompasses the public as active participants in the production of history-making and in understanding, or organizing material archival history. In the end, why not allow crowds to source the material? Or help identify material you have. And why not give credit to them for their hard work?
SO WHAT S IMPORTANT ABOUT PARTICIPATORY ARCHIVES?
SUMMARY We should be looking at how we can give the best to our community and users and how they want to be able to retrieve information. What better way than to involve them. Community Archives should add value to people s lives by increasing their understanding and appreciation of the past. This mission is active, not passive, and most importantly, puts people, not materials, at the centre. Just as libraries are becoming a 'community hub' archives or community archives must become a natural place people go when the want to interact with history, create something, or even have a fun time. They can certainly help establish a stronger connection with a user community, and so hopefully nurture future advocates for community archives.
SUMMARY CONTINUED As Theimer explains: It s about crowd sourcing, getting personal knowledge, adding to an archival collection or creating a new collection outside of the archive. And, well, she s right. I d add that there are several reasons that archives decide to embark on the journey of inviting in the outside world to help in the preservation of community archives: It can serve as promotion for a new collection Provide new knowledge and insights It can save time and money. It can educate and create a better informed community
IN A NUTSHELL Archives 1.0 was about Stuff Archives 2.0 is about archivists Archives 3.0 is about people
FINALLY I strongly believe that if archives wish to remain relevant, they must open up to a more transparent way of documenting archival processes and allow room for user participation to not only improve the contextual information associated with records but improve the overall accessibility of records. The true goal of participatory archives projects should instead be To improve user engagement with, an understanding of, the institution and its collections. It is the future of community archives.
