1 Central New York/Oswego County Teacher Center Summer 2016 Workshops octc.org Workshop Attendance Policy: If you are unable to attend a workshop for which you are registered, you need to give the Teacher Center a minimum of 48 hours notice. We realize that emergencies arise at the last minute. If that happens, please send us an letting us know. Many of our workshops are full to capacity with wait lists of people wanting to attend. With advance notice of a cancellation, we are able to offer that seat to someone else. Please monitor your local TV/radio stations during inclement weather. 2 Differentiated Instruction: Foundations This workshop offers an overview of the essential elements of differentiated instruction. It primarily focuses on The Essential Meaning of Curriculum and The Nature of the Student. It also provides teachers with extended examples of how to differentiate instruction in today s increasingly diverse classrooms. Each participant will learn how to differentiate, or structure lessons at every grade level and content area. Educators will also be able to draw on practical examples given in the workshop. Segments from Carol Ann Tomlinson s book, Differentiating Instruction in Mixed Ability Classrooms, will be researched, studied and looked upon for personal evaluation. Special emphasis will be placed on enabling teachers to understand how to differentiate their own lesson plans. Utilizing approaches that integrate 21 st Century skills, this seminar explores tools that effectively engage students in the collaborative learning process. Presenter: Donna Whyte Date: August 2, Teacher Center (NYSUT) Large Conference Room Time: 8:30 am 3:00 pm (Half hour lunch on your own) Fee: Free 6 hour workshop Audience: Pre K 3 Book Talk: Readers Front & Center: Helping All Students Engage with Complex Text All teachers want and expect their students to be reading increasingly complex texts, yet sometimes the gap between expectations and students' abilities seems wide and deep. It s tempting to look at that gap and step in to fill it for them, but when we d be doing most of the heavy lifting the understanding, analysis, and interpretation that our students should be learning for themselves. So how can teachers reverse this trend and ensure that our students are fully entering, absorbing, and experiencing texts? How can we make sure they re making complex meaning independently and proficiently, as the Common Core State Standards require? 5 Regional Poverty Simulation This is an interactive experience aimed at helping the school and community understand poverty. The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low income family trying to survive from week to week. The object of the experience is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low income people and motivate them to become involved in activities which help reduce the stresses of our students and ways to support the families. Presenter: Local Directors Date: August 11, Drumlin s Country Club Time: First session 8:30 am 11:30 am Second session 12:30 pm 3:30 pm Fee: Free 3 hour simulation Audience: Teacher Leaders and Administrators Registration: See attached flyer for the registration link you will choose either the am or pm session *Be sure you register with the Teacher Center before you register on your districts MLP system to ensure we have a seat available for you in the workshop. July 7, 2016 August 19, 2016 Balance the Mind and Heart: Creating Resilient Schools that Address the Social, Emotional, Ethical, and Academic Needs of Students Instructor: Cecile Wren Grade Level K-12 This online course will allow educators the opportunity to create resilient schools that meet the social, emotional, ethical, and academic (SEAL) needs of students. Participants will explore the research-based skills and competencies that have a positive impact on the organizational structure of their school, the delivery of instruction, and student performance. Digital Resources to Complement Learning Styles Instructor: Denise Lewis Grade Level K-12 The primary goal of this course is to acquaint educators with 21st century tools to differentiate instruction for diverse learners. Participants will be able to customize and upgrade lesson plans with digital tools and web-based resources that will address the unique needs of students. Digital Resources to Complement Learning Styles will provide teachers with the knowledge and skills to connect students with standardsbased curriculum through easy to use Web tools. Using Literature Circles to Enhance Reading Co-Instructors: Kerri Crawford and Emily Peterson Grade level K-8 The common core is asking us to assess text complexity. We must consider qualitative, quantitative, and reader and task. Course participants will examine the criteria for selecting text when conducting their literature circles. Literature Circles add an exciting dimension to a student's literacy experiences. These discussion groups encourage students to be positive members of a literate classroom community while capitalizing on how they personally respond to literature. This course will help the participant explore the various roles of the literature circle and select roles appropriate for their students - regardless of reading level or ability. Participants will conduct and record literature circles in their own classrooms. Volcano Hunt: An Expedition to Improve Critical Thinking Instructor: James McAndrew Grade 5-12 This online course will give participants a positive and rewarding experience through our interaction as you complete projects, reflect on professional readings, and create ipad labs and activities for your own classroom. There will be an emphasis on using critical thinking skills when you plan your projects. This course will be a fun online adventure to several famous volcanoes around the world. As you make your way from one volcano to the next using easy to follow longitude and latitude coordinates, you will participate in creative journaling of your experience as you travel through foreign countries. Are you ready for the adventure of your life? August 1, 2016 September 13, 2016 Using Google Tools for Collaboration, Enrichment and Differentiation of Instruction Instructor: Dorit Eilon Grade level K-12 This fun and engaging course offered by a Google Certified Educator is designed to provide information and examples of various Google tools available to enhance the learning experiences of different learners. Participants will explore Google Earth, Google Docs (collaborative presentations, spreadsheets, documents and forms) Google Apps and Google SketchUp. Examples of how these tools can be integrated with different subject areas that are aligned to national and NYS standards will be shared. All courses require internet access and a comfort level with , Microsoft Word and uploading documents. Some require knowledge of other technologies or programs. Participants are expected to log in and work with the class site at least 3 times each week. Scholarships may be provided through your local NYS Teacher Center. Please secure approval from your home district, if needed, in advance.
