Carl Jung Dominant childhood beliefs formed his theory Visions & Dreams were important paranormal collective unconscious came from this Two different personalities-dual personality Child as he appeared to worldintrovert Cultured gentleman from previous century

Jung s Analytic Psychology Mind or psyche is divided into 3 parts Conscious ego-sense of self Personal Unconscious-thoughts & feeling not part of conscious awareness-past and future material-compensates or balances conscious attitude and ideas Collective unconscious

Collective Unconscious Certain psychic elements passed from generation to generation through unconscious channel Universal archetypes-emotional symbols-predispose us to react in predictable ways to common recurring stimuli. Transpersonal Derived from our ancestors

Archetypes: Animus-Male/woman, Anima- Female/man Mother- generativity, fertility Hero- king Savior Champion-Looking Good Demon-cruel evil Trouble Person Trickster-Magician, wizard, sorcererentertainer Persona- acceptable side people pleasing Shadow- dark side evil twin acting out

COMPLEX Coined by Jung Later developed by Adler Repressed drives that affect later behavior Clusters of emotions and thoughts Unconscious Often center around an archetypal theme Exert disproportionate amount of influence Identified through word association

Jungian Complex Indicators 1. Displaying longer-than-average reaction time to a stimulus word 2. Repeating the stimulus word back as a response 3. Failing to respond at all 4. Using expressive bodily reactions, such as laughing, increased breathing rate 5. Stammering

Jungian Complex Indicators 6. Continuing to respond to a previously used stimulus. 7. Reacting meaninglessly Made up words 8. Reacting superficially with a word that sounds like the stimulus word E.g. die-lie 9. Responding with more than one word 10. Misunderstanding the stimulus word as some other word

Functions of the Mind Sensing Is there something there? Thinking - What is it that is there? Feeling - What is it worth? Intuiting Where did it come from and where is it going? Sensing & Thinking=Rational- Judgment & reason Feeling & Intuiting=Irrationalconscious reasoning is virtually absent

Jung s Attitudes of the Mind Exists in each person one is more dominant than other in each person Extroversion direct psychic energy towards the things in external world Introversion direct psychic energy more inwardly focused

Jung s 8 Personality Types Extroversion Sensing Introversion Sensing Extroversion Thinking Introversion Thinking Extroversion Feeling Introversion Feeling Extroversion Intuiting Introversion Intuiting

Myers-Briggs Types- 4 Functions Sensation (S) seeks fullest possible experience of what is immediate and real Intuition (N) seeks the broadest view of what is possible and insightful Thinking (T) seeks rational order and plan according to impersonal logic Feeling (F) seeks rational order according to harmony among subjective values

Myers Briggs Attitudes & Orientation to Outer World Attitudes: Extroverted (E) attention drawn out to objects & people in environment Introverted (I) attention on inner world of concepts & Ideas Orientation-implicit in Jung s work Perceptive (P) attuned to incoming information Judging (J) making decisions, seeking closure, planning operations, or organizing activities
