1 Getting Started With Your New Samsung GALAXY Phone Not sure how to set up your shiny new Samsung GALAXY? We re here to help! Just follow this setup guide and you ll be able to take advantage of everything your new device has to offer. Let s start with the basics. When turning your phone on for the first time you ll be presented with the screen below, where you will choose the default language you d like to use with your phone. Hit Next in the bottom right corner if you re satisfied with the language you have selected. The next step will prompt you to set up your Wi-Fi connection; if you wish to do so at this time, turn it on by toggling the switch in the top right corner, otherwise hit Next to continue without configuring your Wi-Fi. 1 / 16

2 We ll skip the Wi-Fi setup and proceed to the next step which is a confirmation that you agree to the Samsung End User License Agreement. You must check the I understand and agree to the terms and conditions above to proceed, however, you do not need to agree to send Samsung any error log data if you do not wish to provide this information. Hit Next to proceed. 2 / 16

3 The next step in the setup process asks if you have an existing Google account to add to your new Samsung GALAXY. We ll proceed to set up a new account just in case you re new to Android and do not have an existing Gmail account. If you already have a Gmail account feel free to hit Yes in this process and enter your credentials to continue. After selecting No, you ll be presented with the screen below. Please click Get an account to continue and enter your name in the next screen. The next step prompts you to enter the user name for your new Google account, which is your Gmail address as well. 3 / 16

4 The next step in creating your account is setting up Google password recovery options using SMS or an alternate address, such as a Yahoo Canada . Feel free to set this up if needed, but we will skip this option within this guide. Next you ll be prompted to enable some of Google s cloud based services, such as the Backup & Restore function which copies your app list, app and system settings as well as your Wi-Fi passwords. Additional services include location based data and communications from Google regarding news and offers. The final step in the account setup process is to accept a multitude of Google s Terms of Services and enter in the captcha text displayed to complete the account setup. 4 / 16

5 During the setup process you ll be prompted to join Google s social media platform, Google+. We will skip this part of the process as it s not critical to your GALAXY phone at this time. Please select Not now to proceed. You ll also be given the option to enter your credit card information with Google Wallet if you wish. It is recommended that this information is entered as without it, you re unable to purchase any applications, movies, books or other media from Google s Play Store. If you do not wish to enter your credit card information, Rogers customers have the ability to pay for content using their Rogers bill which can be associated with your Google wallet. 5 / 16

6 The final steps in setting up your new GALAXY prompt for your name which is used to personalize some of the applications you may install on your phone in the future. The next step in setting up your new GALAXY is creating a Samsung account which can be used to back-up your contacts, SMS and MMS messages, Memo and Calendar content. Fill out your details as seen below or use your Facebook information to populate the form. Agree to the terms and conditions and complete the validation process by clicking the link in your when you receive it. If you are unable to validate your account at this time, you have 30 days to do so to activate your Samsung account and all the features associated with it. 6 / 16

7 The final account setup process revolves around setting up a Dropbox account, if you do not already have one. Dropbox can be used to automatically sync your photos and videos to the cloud so that you never have to worry about losing another picture again. Unique to your GALAXY Android phone, there are several features that can improve your experience when using your new smartphone from Samsung. Depending on which GALAXY phone you are using, you will have access to features such as Air gesture and Smart Screen functionality. 7 / 16

8 Samsung s Air gesture functionality provides a feature called Quick Glance, where you can wave your hand above the sensor when the phone is idle and on your desk to view your notifications. Smart Screen provides a useful feature like Smart stay where the phone screen stays on while you are looking at it, preventing the need to have to touch the screen while reading to keep it from sleeping. For more details on these Android customizations please visit The last step in this process is to name your phone before you can start using it. This name is used when searching using Bluetooth, or your Wi-Fi hot spot. Below you ll see the default home screen you re first presented with upon completion of your new GALAXY s setup. 8 / 16

9 Upgrading from another phone? Samsung makes it easy to migrate your data from your old Android or iphone using the Samsung Smart Switch Mobile tool available in the Play Store as shown below. If you re upgrading from another Android, please install the application on both phones and simply select the Android to Galaxy option on the old phone to proceed. Note, if your current Android has a microsd card installed, you will see a message that the SD card contents will not be copied over as you should be simply moving the SD card over to your new phone, assuming it also supports an SD card. Select the content you wish to transfer over to your new GALAXY phone and select Transfer on the phone that has your content saved on it currently. 9 / 16

10 After you ve selected the Transfer option, your phones will emit a tone to connect to each other via Wi-Fi Direct (no data charges are incurred) to begin transferring the content; please select OK to proceed. You will see progress percentage for each type of content you are transferring. The last step in the data migration is to install any applications that were on your old phone onto your new phone. 11 option shows you any applications not currently installed on your new GALAXY and takes you to the Play Store link to begin downloading. If you re upgrading from an iphone, select the Import from icloud option to migrate your data to your new GALAXY. Enter your icloud credentials to see a list of your existing icloud devices and content to migrate to your new GALAXY. 11 / 16

12 You ll see a page showing the completion status of your content being transferred, as shown below. If you select the App list option, Samsung s Smart Switch Mobile app will provide you with a list of similar applications to what was installed on your ios device, if an exact match is not available. Now that your new phone is set up and all applications have been installed, we will show you how to set up your as a final step before you can begin using your new phone! Note if you use Gmail as your primary account, you can launch the Gmail application from your app drawer as that s already configured if you entered your Google credentials during this setup process. 12 / 16

13 If you use services such as Yahoo, Hotmail or Rogers, click the icon on your phone s home page to begin the setup process. Enter your full address and your password and hit Next to continue. The client should automatically detect your settings and present you with the below screen asking for your synchronization settings. Select what period you would like to sync your and how often to check for new s and hit Next. Note, the more frequent you check, the more battery life that will be used up. The final step is to name your account and set up your name that is displayed on any outgoing s. 13 / 16

14 Although not required, we recommend the below steps to secure your device should you ever lose it. The first step is to set up a password or PIN for your device so that if you lose it, anyone that finds it cannot easily access your private data. To set this up, please go to the Settings menu, then select the My device tab and click on Lock screen where you will be presented with the screen seen below. When you ve reached the screen seen above, please select the Screen lock option, where you will be presented with many options to secure your device. The recommended option is to use a PIN or password as these will provide higher security than the other available options. For this example, we will use a PIN; simply enter the PIN and hit Continue, and re-enter your PIN to confirm. 14 / 16

15 Upon successfully setting up your PIN, you will be returned to the Screen lock menu. The next recommended feature to enable is the Android Device Manager, which allows you to locate your phone if you lose it, as well as lock and erase your phone. To enable the feature, please go to the Settings menu and select the More tab, followed by Security. Within the security menu, scroll to the Device administrators option and select it to proceed. Within the Device administrators menu, please select the check box next to Android Device Manager where you will be prompted to activate the feature; confirm by selecting Activate in the below screen. To locate, ring, lock or erase your phone, log in to 15 / 16
