1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Manager Position Title Solution Architect Department Information Technology Location Sydney / Melbourne (preference Melbourne) Direct/Indirect Reports 0 Reports to TBA Date Revised 09/11/2015 Position Level Descriptor An individual at the Manager level is responsible for some or all of the following: people, financial, functional, thought or change leadership outcomes. Individuals at a Manager level lead and implement strategies and operational plans to achieve organisational objectives. The Manager level leads specialist (functional or knowledge areas) or complex, multi disciplinary teams. An individual at the Manager level typically reports to an individual at the Executive level. Position Summary The Solutions Architect s role is to strategically design and implement information systems and networked software architectures that support core organisational functions, and assure their high availability. This individual will gain organisational commitment for all technology and software plans, as well as evaluate and select all technologies required to complete those plans. In addition, the Solutions Architect provides technical leadership across the organisation, from strategic decision making down to the project planning level. The Solutions Architect will have to work through many others in the organisation to succeed. The Solutions Architect will act as a coach for senior leaders and executives in helping them understand the current solutions architecture and gain endorsement for future solutions and spend. The Solutions Architect may also provide direct support and coaching to front-line IT managers and supervisors as they help their direct reports deliver approved solutions. The Solutions Architect will also support project teams in the documentation of development, configuration and integration activities into their project plans. The Solutions Architect will also manage the Architecture Review Board. Flexibility in hours may be required to meet project deadlines. Regular travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with internal customers, vendors, third-party contractors, external suppliers or consultants, stakeholders, project meetings or the direction of team members. Position Responsibilities Key Responsibilities Strategy & Planning Act as visionary and strategist for solution area. Design and implement long-term strategic goals and short-term tactical plans for managing and maintaining corporate technology and software. 2 Ensure that proposed and existing solution architectures are aligned with organisational goals and objectives. Provide architectural expertise, direction, and assistance to Business Analysts, Business System Analysts, Systems Engineers, other Architects, and software development teams. Develop, document, and communicate plans for investing in solutions architecture, including analysis of cost reduction opportunities. Conduct research on emerging technologies in support of systems development efforts, and recommend technologies that will increase cost effectiveness and systems flexibility. Survey market landscape for solution insights, direction, vendors and methods. Speak at trade conferences and seek authorship opportunities in trade publications. Write, or direct the writing of white papers that add further insight and thought in the solution area. Lead development of formalised solution methodologies. Build and maintain repository for deliverables and methodologies. Acquisition & Deployment Where applicable, design, develop, and oversee implementation of end-to-end integrated solutions. Document and maintain the organisations existing solutions architecture and technology portfolio; make recommendations for improvements and/or alternatives. Review new and existing solutions design projects and procurement or outsourcing plans for compliance with standards and architectural plans. Interface and coordinate tasks with internal and external technical resources. Collaborate with Project Managers, vendors and IT stakeholders to provision estimates and develop overall implementation plan for installation, customisation and integration efforts. Provide expertise to identify and translate system requirements into software design documentation. Provide quality assurance for services within the solution area. Operational Management Confer with end-users, clients, or senior management to define business requirements for complex systems (including interfaces) and infrastructure development. Model business and systems processes based on findings through use case scenarios, workflow diagrams, and data models. Work with technical writers to ensure quality internal and external client-oriented documentation. Develop and execute test plans to check infrastructure and systems technical performance. Report on findings and make recommendations for improvement. Develop and manage a systems capacity plan. Develop, document, communicate, and enforce a policy for standardising technology and software as necessary. Provide mentoring or guidance to junior members of the team. 3 Position Selection Criteria Technical Competencies Lead or participated in major end-to-end business process re-engineering or business transformation initiatives. Hands-on experience with business requirements gathering/analysis. Strong analytical and problem solving skills, including a thorough understanding of how to interpret customer business needs and translate them into practical applications and operational solutions. Demonstrated ability to produce requirement artefacts: Business Requirements, Functional Specifications, data flow diagrams, UML modelling techniques, interface designs, test plans and test cases A background in software development with ability to code at some level and knowledge of APIs and SDKs. A technical architecture background. You understand networks, routers, switches, firewalls, SANs, servers and operating systems form a part of the solution stack. Extensive experience in developing strategic systems architecture plans. Proven experience in system design and development. Proven experience in system and network design and development. Strong understanding of information processing principles and practices. Solid grounding in core enterprise applications Strong knowledge of software evaluation principles and practices. Proven project planning and management experience. Good knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws. Demonstrable experience in solution architecture Demonstrable experience in integration solution design. Ability to deliver solution architectures conformant with a TOGAF 9 defined Enterprise Architecture. Aptitude to work as change agent that believes in a continuous improvement approach. Excellence in visual communication using modelling languages such as UML and IDEF. Comprehensive understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), continuous integration, agile software development methodologies, values and procedures. Excellence in architecture documentation skills. Some experience with reverse proxies, web servers, gateways, service oriented architectures, web services (both ReST and SOAP), service buses and integration patterns, security practices, database technologies. Knowledge of highly available, highly scalable cloud based infrastructures (AWS or alike) and continuous delivery. Knowledge of frameworks and standards for solution architecture such as US DoD Systems Engineering and IEEE Standard for Information Technology - Systems Design - Software Design Descriptions. Demonstrated experience and presence to gain the confidence of and influence senior management and other key stakeholders. Demonstrated experience in facilitation of workshops involving participants from senior management to business users. Date: July 2011 page 3 of 5

4 Demonstrated ability to produce effective written reports, analysis and other communications. Demonstrated ability to supervise, coach and mentor a geographically dispersed team. Experience at working in a team-oriented, collaborative and consultative environment. Ability to assess and react to communication styles of business and technical team members. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, executives, managers and subject matter experts. Qualifications/Licenses Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or similar essential. TOGAF 9 Certified essential. COBIT 5 Foundation desirable. ITIL v3 Foundation desirable. Professional membership of IEEE, ACM or similar desirable.
