1 In India, Radius Infratel s focuses on providing network infrastructure on a shared FTTH platform through unified last mile access. Going forward, the company is aiming at registering per cent growth in sales every year for the next four or five years. In an interview with tele.net.in, Rajnish Wahi, CEO, Radius Infratel, talks about the company s progress in India so far and the road ahead. Excerpts What targets have you set in the Indian market? In India, even as we target the metro cities, our focus is also to have a presence in cities with a population of 2 million to 3 million. Since we are doing business on a build-own-operate-maintain model, we want to gradually penetrate the Indian market after the initial deployment of 6,00,000 homes by 2013 in major metros. What is your product portfolio for India? Our role is to offer network infrastructure on a shared FTTH platform through unified last mile access. Our current focus right is to enhance the presence of our NANOnet beyond potential clusters to city wide planning. We are also working to develop solutions in line with the national broadband policy to promote digital equality across India. Beyond triple play services, our NANO network shall facilitate localised value added services and community networking to add value to the end users. We expect to have a balanced contribution to the top line from all the segments by 2013, with the majority coming from the telecom and real estate space. Which technologies do you think are most relevant to India? 1 / 3

2 Although ADSL is the leading technology, its capabilities are limited particularly because it uses asymmetrical speeds which means the greater the distance of the user and the distribution frame, the lower the speed. Another technology VDSL which was followed by VDSL2 supports theoretical symmetrical speeds of up to 100 Mbps (VDSL2) but the carrying capacity is limited with the speed dropping exponentially at approximately 500 meters from the DSLAM. Therefore, the various very high speed architectures available today are denominated FTTx for Fiber to the x. x varies depending on where the deployed fiber is terminated. We believe that fibre-to-the-home on a GPON platform will be a robust platform for India. Which technologies will be significant in the next two or three years? EPON / GEPON remained the technology of choice for FTTx players due to Asia Pacific s exclusive adoption. Between EPON and GPON, the latter has caught on in India. Industry experts expect GPON to be the leading technology by GB GPON technology is already under trials in developed countries. What trends do you foresee in the Indian telecom space? We foresee a future for convergent broadband networks. IPTV adaptation would be rapid and we see a trend of gradual convergence between traditional TV and the internet. This would encourage more time-shifted and personalised viewing, content portability and consumption that combines broadcast, personal and web content. What are your future plans in this market? What investments have you outlined? We have set an ambitious growth plan for the company and are looking at per cent growth in sales every year for the next four or five years. This means we will explore international markets as well. We have raised sufficient funding for 2 / 3

3 our rollout plans over the next five years to the tune of Rs 50 billion. This includes promoters equity, debt and partly by accruals and thereafter, a VC, PE or a public offer could be explored. We will take a call on future investments in our capacity next year.
