Introduction & GEPON Overview CTDI provides a family of Passive Optical Network (PON) products that deliver high quality Voice, Data, Video and Security services utilizing cost-effective Ethernet technology. The CTDI GEPON (Gigabit Ethernet PON) solution will enable the client to provide a full suite of services to their users including Voice Service (Voice over IP (VoIP) or TDM POTS) Data Service (Ethernet or T1/E1) Video Service (IP Video or RF video) Surveillance Services (Video surveillance and/or sensors) The CTDI solution will provide the client with the flexibility to design applications for a highly reliable network even in harsh environments. CTDI addressed these requirements for high availability in demanding installations with features that include: Fully redundant equipment Battery back-up Environmental hardening Route-diverse last-mile connectivity Other features to ensure system performance With a proven history of successful deployments, CTDI provides the ability to rapidly deploy an operational network without requiring a conditioned environment. Whether the application is a well-established development or new construction, CTDI delivers a solution that effectively enables point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communications. The CTDI Solution CTDI s suite of GEPON products provide extremely flexible and efficient solutions for applications requiring: High bandwidth 10 Gbps rate in both upstream and downstream directions. Large numbers of device interfaces Long distances Reliable infrastructure The CTDI family of products has been deployed throughout the world in a variety of applications in both controlled and uncontrolled environmental conditions. As indicated previously, CTDI provides a GEPON, or Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network system. Since the system is a passive optical network there are no active components in the outside plant infrastructure. This presents a significant advantage in operational requirements and support effort. Installation, operation and maintenance are simplified and costs associated with these activities are reduced because the electronics are Page 2 of 12

located only at the endpoints of the fiber network. The PON port of the OLT feeds into an outside plant and optical splitter configuration that enables up to thirtytwo splits in a variety of possible configurations (i. e., 1 x 32, 1 x 2 to 1 x 16, 1 x 4 to 1 x8, etc.). A significant feature of the CTDI solution is reach; the system can transmit up to twenty kilometers without any optical regeneration. CTDI solutions are scalable. We offer a variety of alternatives supporting a few dozen to tens of thousands of users with the ability to manage each user port independently and remotely. Each Ethernet port is capable of scaling from 0 to 100 Mb/s in 64 Kb/s increments. In addition, each port can support multiple different services simultaneously, which is discussed in more detail later in this document. The ability to dynamically allocate unused bandwidth to support users offers an advantage in bandwidth management capabilities. Each subscriber can be allocated guaranteed bandwidth (i. e. 500 Kb/s, 1 Mb/s, 10 Mb/s, etc.) and allowed to burst up to port speed (100 Mb/s) or any lower bandwidth setting. All of these critical functions are user controlled. This control can be implemented locally or remotely. The flexibility to manage bandwidth on an individual port or individual user basis establishes an efficient mechanism for guaranteed bandwidth availability while at the same time allowing users to take advantage of available bandwidth on the network. 4 The CTDI solution has been engineered for and provides several advantages over traditional architectures, including Minimal power requirements Hardened operation in uncontrolled environmental conditions Flexible industry-standard Ethernet interfaces Fiber optic PONs that provide Highly scalable bandwidth Highly reliable infrastructure Field upgradeable hardware and software modifications Minimal Power Requirements CTDI products are optimized for maximum performance and minimum power draw. Each unit has been designed for redundant power capabilities and operates using either existing power infrastructure or backup battery power. Minimal power requirements result in significant cost savings with respect to both the recurring operational expense and the capital expense of battery backup. Engineered for Hardened Operations CTDI products have been designed to operate in uncontrolled environmental conditions. This results in the ability to place aggregation devices in locations without the costly requirement to provide temperature and humidity control. This feature is extremely important in implementing an application in a harsh environment. CTDI products have been tested and are operating to these specifications: Temperature Range: -40 C to 65 C 95 % Humidity (non-condensing) Industry Standard Ethernet Interfaces Each ONT port is capable of bi-directional connectivity up to 100 Mb/s, and in some cases 1 Gig ports are available. Industry standard Ethernet interface options offer the flexibility to rate limit (64 Kb up to 100 Mb) and manage each port individually, enabling the user to specify the Type of Service (TOS), Quality of Service (QoS) and bandwidth available on a per device basis. As stated earlier, the CTDI solution allows the client to control this functionality. Page 4 of 12

Fiber Optic Passive Optical Network CTDI s GEPON technology enables the client to address current service needs while insuring future requirements for growth and capabilities are met. Each GEPON is capable of bi-directional transmission at speeds up to one gigabit per second of shared bandwidth. With significant bandwidth available, applications such as real-time video that are either challenging or impossible in other network architectures are simple and easy to address using the CTDI GEPON solution. 6 CTDI GEPON Solution Product Addendum CTDI Equipment Alternatives CTDI s GEPON products will complement your communications applications. Whatever your requirements, however many devices, however much bandwidth, CTDI will provide a cost effective, scalable solution. Head-End Equipment (edge200, edge2000, edge10) CTDI offers three different Optical Line Termination (OLT) or head-end devices: edge200, edge2000 and edge10. In a simplistic view, the edge200 offers 2 PONs, the edge PONs, and the edge10 up to 64 1 Gig PONs. The edge10 will also support 10 Gig PONs. For simplicity this white paper focuses on the edge2000 OLT. However, the edge200, edge2000 and edge10 deliver identical functionality and operate on the same software. Figure 3: CTDI edge10 (center) edge2000 (left) and edge200 (right) OLTs (Pictures are not to scale) Page 6 of 12

The Edge10 OLT chassis will generally be located in the vicinity of the central office, headend, data center, hub or similar communications aggregation point. The chassis has been developed for central office quality performance and provides redundant (A & B) 48 V DC power feeds and chassis ground. The chassis will fit in either a 19 or 23 rack and is 14 rack units high. The Switching Fabric Card (FAB) is the central controller of the system and can be installed as either unprotected or protected in the center two slots of the chassis. It has a Network Management (NM) interface, and a 160 Gb layer 2 switching fabric and CPU control complex that manages all aspects of the CTDI Edge10 system and attached ONTs. The Network Management interface is a pair of standard Ethernet interfaces that can be assigned an IP address and connected to the local network management infrastructure. GigaVu is the CTDI Element Management System (EMS) that can either be installed in a stand-alone configuration or be integrated as a subset of a product like HP OpenView. The Network Uplinks to the core are provided by the Network Interface Module (NIM card), which provides 8 Gbps of uplink capacity each. NIMs can be installed in a stand alone or redundant configuration. These are SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) GigE interfaces (i. e Mb/s, MM, SM-1310 or SM-1550). There are 8 per card, and can be separate or can be link-aggregated depending on the application. There is also a NIM card with 2 x 10 Gig uplinks. Although TDM services may not be a mandatory requirement, there are clearly opportunities that the client will identify where TDM capabilities would be beneficial. With the edge10, CTDI provides a patented, robust set of TDM services. The Telephony Interface Module (TIM card) can be installed as unprotected or protected. This module provides a full nonblocking cross-connect capability. This card has 8 x OC3-STM1 interfaces. CTDI offers true TDM Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) and both clear channel and channelized T1/E1 capability. The edge10 supports up to eight (8) PIM cards. These cards can either support 8 x 1 Gig PON interfaces, or 2 x 10 Gig PON interfaces. Each interface uses SFP or XFP pluggable optics. Each PON can provide service for up to sixty-four (64) splits or end-points. Each PIM card can be configured as either unprotected or protected and each PON has the ability to provide a full gigabit (or 10 Gig) of bandwidth bi-directionally to its sixty-four end-points. This symmetrical bandwidth capability is a vital requirement in configurations where there is significant upstream bandwidth such as the need for full motion video (i. e. Video Security Cameras). If the application requires high definition or high-speed video, CTDI supports these features. Page 7 of 12

To summarize: Each PON supports up to 64 end-points (note: the Edge200 and Edge2000 support 32 end points) Each PIM card supports 8 PONs Each Edge 200 chassis supports up to 2 PONs Each Edge 2000 chassis supports up to 16 PONs Each Edge10 chassis supports up to 64 1 Gig PONs or Gig PONs (these can be mixed on the same chassis) Each PON provides up to 1 or 10 Gb/s bi-directional bandwidth, depending on the type of PON card The Edge10 chassis will provide up to 80 Gig of network interfaces using either 1 Gig SFPs or 10 Gig XFPs In addition to the actual GEPON capability, CTDI offers a radio frequency (RF) overlay network architecture. By simply converting an electrical RF cable network interface to an optical wavelength (1550 nm) and inserting that signal onto the PON, the client will be able to deliver voice, data, and video service to each end-user across a single fiber for every sixty-four end-points. This service offering will significantly reduce both capital expense as well as operational expenses while simultaneously simplifying the overall network architecture and management requirements. Page 8 of 12

End-User / Optical Network Termination Equipment (ONTs) ONTs are the devices at the downstream end-point of the PON providing the user interface(s). Depending on the specific application, an end-point might serve a single user as in a single family home or multiple users with multiple services such as in an apartment block. Figure 4. Typical CTDI GEPON Architecture Page 9 of 12

Single End-User Application (Single Family Homes) CTDI offers several varieties of hardened single end-user Optical Network Termination (ONT) devices, which can deliver any or all of the services discussed previously. Consider for example a single end-user. For a FTTH application using VoIP or TDM POTS for voice delivery and RF for video services, CTDI offers the home4000, a 4-port Ethernet ONT with integrated RF capability. This ONT provides the ability to directly connect to an F- connector on a television for broadcast cable TV service. Again, as discussed earlier, each Ethernet port is capable of being managed independently and can be rate limited from 0 to 100 Mb/s. Figure 5: home4000 Single End-User ONT Page 10 of 12

CTDI GEPON Solution Business Applications A second example is a business application where several simultaneous users may require access from a central location. In this situation, RF video (i. e. cable TV) may not be of concern, however, high priority or highly sensitive information may be of crucial importance. For this application, CTDI offers a 4-port Ethernet Xgen1000 or an Xgen8000 ONT with the ability to provide fractional gigabit Ethernet connectivity. The Xgen8000 has dual PON interface capability for ultra high reliability and of course, both are hardened for use in unconditioned environments. Also offered is the Xgen9000 with 4 expansion slots that can offer a mix of 10/100 Ethernet, 1000FX SFP, T1/E1s, POTS and VoIP ports. Figure 6: Xgen1000 (left), Xgen9000 (center) and Xgen8000 (right) Business ONT Page 11 of 12

Multiple Dwelling Unit Application (Apartments or MDUs) A third example is an apartment in which you may have a variety of end-users. For this situation, CTDI offers a 24-Port Ethernet Xgen6000 with integrated RF capability. For a building or building floor with up to twenty-four users, a single Xgen6000 will provide full service capability for each. For more end-users, more Xgen6000s can be deployed for additional service in 24 port increments. Using the Xgen6000 as one of the thirty-two end-points clearly shows how a single PON can be used to service many end-users (32 end-points per PON x 24 end-users per end-point = 768 end-users per PON). The amount of bandwidth allocated to each end-user is fully provisionable by the client on a per port basis, with the total bandwidth per PON limited to 1 Gb/s bi-directional. In addition, the Xgen6000 will support RF video delivery for as many as eight television sets without RF amplification and has performance specifications to enable even more with amplification. Figure 7: Xgen6000 Multiple End-User ONT Page 12 of 12
