3 Make a Justgiving fundraising page! IT S THE FASTEST, EASIEST, AND CLEVEREST WAY TO RAISE MONEY! By logging on to you can create a page where friends and family can donate directly to your cause. Within Just Giving you can set up a text code where donations to your page can be received via text. There are also Just Giving widgets - so you can add a small application to your blog or website. If you need any more advice on how to set these up please call Ruth JustGiving s Top 10 Fundraising Tips 1. Personalise your message The best fundraising pages tell a really good story. Let people know why you re going to the trouble of raising money, and they re much more likely to take the time to donate. Explain why your charity deserves support and what their donations will buy, eg 10 will buy a school desk or 20 will help restore someone s sight. 2. Add photos and video Personal photos make your page much more engaging. Even better - add your own YouTube video. It gives you lots of scope to be funny, imaginative and compelling and gives your supporters a good reason to send your page on to their friends. 3. Tell everyone about your page Before you your entire address book, ask your closest friends and family to donate first. An empty page can be a bit intimidating, so having a couple of donations on the page should encourage other sponsors. People tend to match the amounts already listed on the page, so if they re generous ones, all the better! your other contacts in groups - colleagues, running club, friends overseas, etc - personalising your message each time. Include our helpdesk - address help@justgiving.com - so anyone who has difficulty donating can contact us directly. Use your own system to set up groups, send s to large numbers of people and keep your communications personal. Potential supporters are more likely to open an that comes from you than an address they don t recognise. 4. Publicise your page Print some Moo cards with your page URL on the back and give them out to everyone you meet! Put up posters in your gym, college, church or school too. 5. Put a link in your signature Add your page s web address, or one of our sponsor me badges, to your signature. That way, every you send raises awareness of your fundraising and attracts more donations. 6. Keep your page up to date Post regular updates on your progress and upload new photos. It gives people a reason to come back to your page and encourages them to donate again or to send your page on to their friends. 7. Send a follow-up Be persistent. It takes more than one round of s to reach your target. You know what it s like - people mean to donate, but sometimes they don t quite get round to it on the first request. Remember to thank the people who ve already supported you, and to ask them to send your page to their contacts. 8. Personalise your thank-you You can edit the thank-you that we automatically send to people who donate by logging in to your account and going to Edit your thank-you message. Make sure you encourage people to send your page on to friends who might be interested in sponsoring you. 9. Contact your local media A few lines in the local paper or an appeal on your local radio station can really help. By going straight to your JustGiving page, readers and listeners can sponsor you really easily. Contact Thai Children s trust for more help with this Keep fundraising after your event Around 20% of donations through JustGiving come in after people finish their event. So keep fundraising once you ve crossed the finish line - it s a good chance to an update and a final appeal! Good Luck! 2
4 The JustGiving guide to social media fundraising So you ve already asked your close friends and family for donations, but are still short of your fundraising target. How can you reach more people? Social media is a powerful way to get your story, and your fundraising page, to a potentially unlimited audience. Here are JustGiving s top tips on using social media to reach your fundraising goals. Fundraising on Facebook Update your Facebook status with your JustGiving link - so all of your friends see your link in their News Feeds. For an extra push, post your link on their walls. Ask friends to donate their status update to you. Via their statuses, you can reach people you might not know. Use the JustGiving Facebook application to invite people on Facebook to sponsor you: apps.facebook.com/jgdonation Ask your friend to use Facebook Connect on JustGiving after they ve donated. This way they can share your page with their Facebook friends. You can also use it to promote your page. Visit our Facebook Page > Fundraising on Twitter Use Twitter to share your JustGiving page - write what you re doing and why people should sponsor you, in the shortest sentence possible. Ask your followers to retweet your link - so it reaches their followers too (remember: the shorter your tweet, the more retweet-able it is). Ask Thai Children s Trust to share your link on our Facebook or Twitter sites. Or post it yourself on our Facebook wall. Visit our Twitter Page > Fundraising with Flickr or Picasa Take photos of your training or event and share these on sites like Flickr or Picasa. Show people what you re doing and why they should support you. Don t forget to link to your page. Fundraising on, well, the web! Search ALL of these sites for people talking about the charity you re supporting. If you find people interested in the same cause, talk to them. They might be interested in supporting you, and you might make some new friends along the way. Fundraising with Blogs If you ve got a great story, start a blog about it. Blogs are a great way to share your photos, videos and tweets in one place, keeping your supporters up-to-date. Fundraising with the JustGiving widget Use the JustGiving widget to show your latest fundraising total on your own website by logging on to your account and choosing other tools>donation prompts 3
5 Fundraising with Facebook 1. Status Updates As a fundraiser you should be posting an update on your profile page fairly regularly, and it should *always* have your JustGiving page attached to it. Maybe you ve had a big donation, or gone training, it could be anything. Update it regularly after all, you ve got something to promote that can be a discussion point. It s a surefire way to be omnipresent on your friend s newsfeeds so there s no possible way they won t know what you re up to. 2. Post Photos Make sure you try and capture as much of your story on camera and regularly upload photos, tagging yourself and anyone else in them as necessary. Photos look MASSIVE on profiles now, so get snapping. Also, make sure your profile pic is suitably related to what you re up to. 4. Do Video Video is an extraordinarily powerful medium to get stories and concepts across to people quickly. Use a dedicated video site like YouTube or Vimeo. Both YouTube and Vimeo have a good Facebook integration. If you re already using them then make sure you share the videos in your newsfeed. 5. Events If you re actually doing an official event, like a marathon for example, then search for it and see if it s listed on Facebook. If it is, add yourself to it and post a link to your JustGiving page. If you re doing your own thing and you want others to take part, then you can build your own event on Facebook and send it to your friends. 7. Facebook Mail The internal messaging system in Facebook is really, really powerful. It works great for group s and even better for one-to-one communications. Don t underestimate the power of writing to people individually. It will yield much better results than sending the same message to everyone. You could have a colleagues group, for example, that might be a bit more formal than the message you d write to your friends. 8. Network with your charity We have our own Facebook account here > Share your tips and stories with the fundraising team so we can share with others. Post your photos on our page too, so our supporters can see what you have been up to! 9. Don t forget to say thanks Wall-post a thank you note when somebody sponsors you. It acts as a thanks AND a reminder to others in the newsfeed that they need to sponsor you because other people are. When your activity is over don t forget to thank people collectively and individually. Let them know in as much detail as you can how much of a difference everyone has made together through your activity. 4

Holiday auction Ask your boss to donate a few days of paid leave and auction it off to the highest bidder. Sponsored job swap Sponsor the boss to work on reception for an hour.
