1 Instructors: Eda Daloğlu Sema Akboğa Ş.Burcu Giray Osman Şahin Harun Ercan Barış Çetin Can Eren History 301: History of the Turkish Revolution Fall 2012 History 301 covers the transformation and the reforms of the Ottoman period leading to the foundation of the Turkish Republic. The analysis of this process will focus on political, economic and social aspects of Ottoman-Turkish modernization with an emphasis on the developments in the international context. Course Requirements: Grading will be as follows: Exams -- Mid-term exam: 35% -- Final exam: 35% In-Class Evaluation -- Participation (not equal to attendance): 6 points (6%) -- Pop quizzes: 15 points* (15%) -- Presentation**: 9 points (9%) -- Draft meeting: 2 points (2%) -- Power-point presentation: 5 points (5%) -- Report: 2 points (2%) NOTES: * You will have quizzes that are worth 21 points in total, but two lowest-scored quizzes will be dropped. In addition, medical excuse or excused absence for quizzes will not be accepted. **Presentations are designed as individual presentations in which each student is responsible for their own sub-topic related to the course material. Each student is expected to prepare a 5- minute power-point presentation and write a short report on their research. And there will also be a draft meeting during the semester to evaluate the student s progress for presentation. Further instructions regarding the presentations will be given in class. 1
2 Grading Scale A A A B B B C C C D D F (A+) is considered as a grade for an exceptional performance. The contribution of (A+) and (A) to your SPA/GPA is equal. Class Regulations: Attendance is not required. Students who are late for class for more than 15 minutes will not be allowed to attend the class. Students are not allowed to leave the classroom without the permission of the instructor. Students lose all points (including participation, quizzes, and presentations etc.) for the sessions they do not attend with or without medical excuse. It is students responsibility to be present in class during the quizzes and presentations. Presentations and presentation reports that are not submitted on assigned due date will not be accepted with or without medical excuse. Students are required to attend their assigned sessions. Students can take quizzes only in their assigned sessions. It is required that students do not miss the exams. In case of illness, a valid medical excuse has to be submitted within one week of absence. During quizzes, presentations and exams any use of cellular phones or any other technological device is considered cheating. Students who are involved in such actions will be subjected to disciplinary action. Academic Honesty: Please refer to p. 60 of the general catalogue.
