1 WADE HOUSE GREENBUSH, WI 25th ANNUAL CIVIL WAR WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 26 & 27 SKIRMISH & BATTLE 11:00 am and 2:00 pm ONE OF WISCONSIN S LARGEST CIVIL WAR ENCAMPMENTS AND BATTLE RE-ENACTMENTS EVENTS AND PROGRAMMING 9:00 am 5:00 pm wadehouse.org
2 WELCOME TO THE 25 th ANNUAL CIVIL WAR WEEKEND! In 1990, Jim Brown and a group of Civil War Re-enactors approached Jeff Schultz, then Director of Wade House Historic Site, with an idea. They proposed bringing the Civil War to Wade House. It seemed to be a natural fit the Wade House Inn operated during the war, business records show that a wounded soldier spent time recovering in the Wade House, and members of Wade s family served in the Federal army (2 soldiers, a doctor, and a nurse). The re-enactment started small and quickly grew into one of the largest Civil War events in Wisconsin. Re-enactment units from all over the Midwest participated in the event. Many of these same units still participate today, with the children and grandchildren of the original re-enactors taking their ancestor s places in camp and on the battlefield. The Staff of Wade House Historic Site and the Wisconsin Historical Society would like to thank the thousands of re-enactors who have volunteered their time and talent over the past 25 years to make this event a meaningful and educational experience for school children and the public. Their efforts have brought the Civil War to life for more than 100,000 people since the program began. During today s re-enactment, Confederate soldiers, dug in behind earthworks, will defend their city from the Union army. A skirmish at 11am each day will be followed by a full scale battle at 2pm. In between battles guests can visit the battlefield to experience the earthworks and interact with soldiers. New programs this year include a visit from General Ulysses S. Grant, Caroline Quarlls (who escaped slavery in St. Louis to live free in Canada), award winning musician Chris Vallillo, and a look at the National flags of the Confederacy. We welcome back Fritz Klein as President Lincoln (Saturday only), Tin Cremona, the Regimental Volunteer Band of Wisconsin, the Civil War Singers of Manitowoc County, David Rambow, and the Historical Time Keepers. A wide assortment of food and beverages are available in the concession area. Period merchants offer goods from the late 19 th century and Civil War themed merchandise in Sutler Row. Save time to visit the Wade House Stagecoach Inn, blacksmith shop, sawmill, and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, all of which are included in the day s admission. Wade House would also like to thank the hundreds of volunteers and generous donors who make this event possible. As you enjoy the weekend, please remember our forefathers who wagered their lives in pursuit of American ideals. Wade House Historic Site is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society, under whose auspices Wade House and eleven other historic sites and museums aspire to connect people to the past.
