1 Notebooks For STEM Classes & Robotics Clubs Dr. L. Lennie Irvin San Antonio Writing Project 6/10/15 Notebook entry from Thomas Edison, 1886 Notebook entry from future Thomas Edison, 2013 Writing Activates and Develops Higher Order Thinking Why Have Students Write? Writing stimulates active learning and active reasoning. There is a direct relationship between the formation of concepts and the work of expressing them in words. Writing requires students to impose discipline on their thoughts by asking them to form and shape their thinking. Most importantly, writing makes their thinking visible. When students use notebooks as an integral part of their studies, they think critically about their thinking. This reflective thinking can be encouraged by notebook entries that present opportunities for students to plan, develop, and test their ideas and understanding. Notebooks also offer powerful opportunities for self-assessment, which motivates students to rethink and restate their understanding. Revising their notebook entries helps students clarify their understanding of the concepts under investigation. Lastly, notebooks as a repository of notes, ideas, and activities are tools and companions that students can use to scaffold their own learning. 1

2 Structuring, Organizing and Managing the Use of Notebooks Model of Organization of a Science Notebook Applicable for a Robotics Notebook Scientist Notebook Think as a Scientist Record as a Scientist Reflect as a Scientist Guidelines: Scientist's notebook must be in class daily. Example Paste- in Guide Notebooks will be assessed according to the organization criteria. Leave the first 3 pages for your Table of Contents. Date each page on the (upper right hand corner). Number every page (bottom right hand corner). Written entries must be on the right hand side. Keep a neat and organized scientist's notebook at all times. 3 Framework #1: Entry/Exit Journals Entries (the easy- smeasy approach to using journals) Entry Journal When students arrive to class, they take five minutes to write what they plan to do and accomplish that day. Students can also review previous exit journals from last time to refresh themselves on the progress of their work. Example Sentence Starters to Guide Entry Journals Last time in club, I worked on. I was left with the question:. Today, I plan to. Special help I will need from my teacher or group is. By the end of class, I will accomplish. As students begin working, teachers can check- in with students to monitor their work and progress. Exit Journal At the end of class, students take five minutes to record what they accomplished that day. Their entries can include special problems or victories they encountered as well as questions they have. Students should record the first thing they will work on next time. Example Sentence Starters to Guide Exit Journals In club today, I worked on. I accomplished these things:. Special problems or questions I am left with include. The first thing I work on next time will be. Teachers can review these entries to get further input on students progress and special difficulties they are encountering. Quick Assessment: Teachers can roam the room putting stickers or stamping pages of students who are on task. These positive indicators can add up to some prize or recognition (say, students with 15 or more stickers by the end of the nine weeks get a pizza party or to pick from a prize box). 3

4 Framework #2: Entry Types to Fit the Engineering Design Process Scientific and Engineering Method Compared The iterative steps of the engineering design process are to: Define the Problem Do Background Research Specify Requirements Brainstorm Solutions Choose the Best Solution Do Development Work Build a Prototype PBTRR Entry Types that Fit the Engineering Process Plan --entries labeled as Plan can work on any of these part of the process. Entries could be further specified--plan: Define the Problem Build --these entries fit for both the programming and building of the robot Test and Redesign Test --entries focused on the trial and error testing of the robot Redesign Redesign --trouble-shooting and revising problems with the robot. It essentially is a return to the Plan phase of development Review Review --for reflective processing at any stage --Review Plan; Review Test 4

5 Framework #3: Before- During- After Focus notebook entries for different times in the iterative design process. 6 Framework #4: Two- Sided, Input- Output Interactive Notebook This approach to structuring a notebook is appropriate for students to record and process important content. One side is teacher- directed where content is specified and recorded by the student; the other side is where the student can interact with and personally connect to the material. 6

7 Building Academic Vocabulary Specific vocabulary instruction impacts heavily on student achievement. In one district, 2,400 terms have been identified that middle school students need to know in order to be successful in all the content areas they are instructed in. Knowledge of any topic is encapsulated in the terms the student knows that are relevant to the topic. Robert J. Marzano Two Strategies for Notebook Entries that Work on Vocabulary The Important Thing About (from The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown) How to Do Important Thing About Entries Students write only one paragraph on one page in their notebook. Each entry starts with The important thing about is. Then it follows with details. (Encourage comparisons to previous knowledge.) Finally, it concludes with the same idea it had in the first sentence. Entry Type: The Important Thing About Word: Simple Machines The important thing about simple machines is that they get the work done for you in an easier way. A wedge is like a door stop and it pushes things apart. The wheel and axle make things turn like the middle of a pencil sharpener. An incline can help you move something heavy up like a wheelchair ramp. But the important thing about simple machines is that they are an easier way to get the work done. 8 Debriefing/Reflective Activities Asking students to reflect upon what has happened and on what they think is a powerful instrument for helping their understanding to grow deeper. Reflective writing is useful for troubleshooting and problem- solving, but it also can tap into important affective dimensions of students experiences. Students' attitudes and emotions have a strong influence on their learning. Use writing to debrief at the end of a robotics session: Reflective Entry What went right today? What was the best part of what happened? What went wrong today? Why do you think we had a problem with that? Write a short plan to avoid having this problem again. In robotics class where are you really having fun? What is happening? What does it look like? What does it sound like? What did you learn today? What questions do you have? Entry Type: Reflection Write about what went right today? What went wrong? How do you feel about your robot and this class right now? 8
